CXXX. Confessions [Nyotalia]
As soon as Spencer got home and saw Amelia's truck in the driveway, his heart dropped. He slid out and closed the door, and was immediately met by Amelia when he turned around.
"Spencer! Oh my God, you look so awful. We need to get food in you right now-" Suddenly, he was met by a stinging smack to the face, and he looked to Amelia in shock. "That's what you get for making me worry about you for a week. What the hell is wrong with you? What happened? No one would explain anything to me! I tried calling the other boys but no one would tell me what happened and you weren't talking to me."
"I'm sorry." Was the first words that slipped out of Spencer's mouth. "I just- I wanted to figure out my thoughts and what I was feeling without making things weird or upsetting anyone- I guess that backfired." He stated, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Where did you go? I didn't even know if you were alive!" Amelia exclaimed, her eyes swimming with anger, confusion, and hurt.
"I was at Shelby's just now." Spencer explained.
Amelia raised a brow. "Like, the female Spencer?"
"Yeah, the female me." Spencer nodded.
"What were you over there for?" Amelia asked suspiciously.
"I had to talk to her. Bounce ideas off of her, see if she thought I was going crazy." Spencer said, physically becoming more uncomfortable as he spoke.
Amelia frowned. "... You're breaking up with me." Spencer's eyes widened, but before he could even speak to ask how she knew that, she held up her hand to silence him. "It's pretty obvious dude. But, I think we should go inside and sit down."
"Uh- okay." Spencer stuttered, allowing Amelia to lead him inside. He sat down on the couch while she continued on to the kitchen, where she fixed him a plate of leftover pizza.
"Eat." She directed sternly, placing the plate in his lap. Spencer obeyed, taking a bite of pizza and forcing himself to chew slowly instead of shoving the slice in his mouth.
"Okay, let's talk. What made you lock yourself in that room all this time?" Amelia asked, leaning back and crossing her arms over her chest.
Spencer took a deep breath. This was never going to be easy to admit. "Okay, so, at the guys night, we played a game of truth or dare-"
"Truth or dare? Isn't that-"
"Yes it is a girl thing. I think everyone can agree on this." Spencer sighed. "Whether it's a girl thing or not, we played, and Sam dared Dennis to kiss me."
Amelia looked over Spencer for a few seconds, before her shoulders slumped and she frowned. "You like Dennis, don't you?"
Spencer looked at her in surprise. "How'd you know?"
"I know y'all don't like to think of me as intelligent, but I'm not as dumb as you think." Amelia stated. "I guess I'm not surprised. You two have always been really close, and he's always flirting... I guess I was just relying on you not to feel anything back." Amelia admitted sadly.
Spencer frowned, looking away. "I'm really sorry, Amelia. I never meant for this to happen."
Amelia nodded slightly. "I know. You can't help how you feel. It just sucks that I decided to make this work and you decided not to."
Spencer glanced her way. "What do you mean?"
"Well, when I met female you- er, Shelby, and then I looked back at you- well, literally all I could see was that girl's face in your's. It freaked me out, like, a lot. But... I figured I'd get over it eventually." Amelia stated.
Spencer raised a brow. "Have you?"
Amelia shifted uncomfortably. "If I'm being honest, no. Sorry Spenc."
Spencer grimaced slightly. "I really don't have room to be upset about considering the circumstances of this conversation."
Amelia pursed her lips. "If this is really is the end, I think we both need to agree that this is not worth ending our friendship." Spencer glanced at her slightly, raising a brow. "I mean, even though a relationship didn't work out between us for our own reasons, I think it's safe to say that we still care a lot about each other."
"For sure." Spencer nodded.
Amelia smiled slightly, leaning in and hugging Spencer. He return the gesture. "I love you, Spencer. And I know you do too. Sometimes, things just don't work out the way we want them too." Amelia stated, partially to herself. When Spencer pulled away, he frowned when he discovered Amelia was tearing up.
"It'll be okay." Spencer muttered, gently wiping the tear that fell onto her cheek. "I love you."
She sighed, leaning into his hand. "I know." They sat there for a second, both collecting the reality of what just occurred, before Amelia sat up. "Now call Dennis."
Spencer's countenance transformed from sadness to panic. "What?"
"Well, I can't let you break it off for me because of your feelings for someone else and leave you alone, because I know you won't tell him in person or call him by yourself." Amelia crossed her arms. "So call him. Right now. He deserves to know, you deserve to have all this off your chest, and I deserve some closure."
Spencer sighed. "Fine." He whispered, and with a shaking hand, he pulled out his phone, and opened it all the way to Dennis's number. However, when he got there, his thumb hovered over the call button, but did not press it. His entire arm was shaking vigorously, and his teeth were gritted together. "I can't do it."
"I will then." Amelia said with determination, reaching forward and pressing the call button. Spencer begrudging brought his phone up to his ear.
Rather quickly, the line picked up. "Spencer! Is that you? Or is this Amelia calling off your phone?"
"It's me, bro." Spencer stated in a shaking voice.
"Dude, I'm sorry about what happened at that sleepover. I can't say it enough. I don't know what-"
"Dennis, dude. Let me talk. I have to do this quickly." Spencer cut him off.
"... Okay."
"I don't know how to say this without making it super awkward and weird between us. I don't want to ruin our friendship, but... I like you. Like, I have a crush on you. I didn't realize it until that sleepover, but... It's definitely real." He took a deep breath. Amelia watched him carefully, because he looked like he was ready to faint. Tears collected in his eyes and he squeezed them shut. "I understand that this probably ruins everything. I understand it if you never want to talk to me again, or if you think I'm weird and gross and creepy... But that's how I feel and you deserved to know. I'm... I'm really really sorry." The last statement was a whisper as all the energy Spencer had available seemed to leave his body. He quickly fumbled to hang up the phone before Dennis could respond.
Amelia's brows furrowed. "You're not going to see what he says?"
Spencer shook his head, covering his face with his hands. "I already know it's nothing good."
"Well, either way, I'm glad you got it off your chest." She sighed, leaning against the back of the couch. "Now we can all relax."
But Spencer would hardly call himself relaxed. He turned off his phone, rubbing his temples in an effort to calm down.
"Finish your pizza, and go take a nap." Amelia directed, watching Spencer with sadness in her eyes. Spencer nodded, obeying her orders.
