CXXVIII. Biromantic
"Spencer, I'm leaving to get food with Soo." Amelia called from out in the hallway. "Do you want to come?"
Silence.
Amelia sighed. "All right. I'm going then." She stated, walking down the hall and out of the house. She hopped in her truck, started the engine, and drove away.
Once Spencer was sure she was gone, he opened door and made his way to the bathroom. He turned and looked into the cracked mirror. It had been almost a week since he had locked in himself away in his room, and it had taken a physical toll on his appearance. His hair was disheveled and knotted, his face shiny with grease. It was alarming to him, given he usually made an effort to shower every day. His eyes looked sulken in, the bags under his eyes prominent and purple. He was honestly sleeping only two hours a night- the rest of the time, he spent trying to figure out how he felt and crying from a variety of emotions, namely guilt, sadness, and confusion.
He hadn't eaten either. He had no appetite for it and it had honestly become a bit of self-punishment for what he was feeling. He might eat something, but his main priority was to shower and get out of the house to meet up with Shelby at her house.
He showered quickly, brushed his teeth and got dressed, leaving the house and locking the door behind him. He got his car and drove quickly over. He wanted to get home before Amelia in case Shelby wasn't as helpful as he needed her to be.
He pulled up and knocked on the door. Given the lack of cars in the driveway, he began to fear that no one was home. However, a couple seconds later, the door opened, and Shelby was stared up at him in astonishment. "Spencer?" She asked in disbelief. "You look terrible."
"I feel terrible." He said miserably.
"Yeah, I got your message." Shelby said, moving aside to let him in. "What's been going on?"
"Well, about a week ago, I went to a sleepover with the guys, and we played Truth or Dare."
"Isn't that more of a girls thing?"
"ANYWAYS, Dennis got dared to kiss me. And, I let him because I knew he wouldn't want to be out first round." Spencer looked away.
"Okay... And now you're upset because... You don't like lips?" She predicted, putting herself in Spencer's shoes. "I don't quite think that's a big enough deal to lock yourself away for a week."
Spencer looked at her with suspicion. "How did you know that?"
"Dennis has been calling me everyday, wanting to know if I've heard something from you." Shelby crossed her arms. "He's really worried.
"Damnit," Spencer muttered, covering his face, "this is a complete mess." He kept his face covered, shaking his head. "I'm not hiding because I don't like lips. I'm hiding..." His face turned red under his hands, "because I liked his lips."
Shelby's jaw dropped. "Oh my God."
"I'm a terrible person." He cried, squeezing his eyes shut and running his fingers through his wet hair.
"No no, I didn't say that because it's bad that- I just thought you'd be like me and be heteroromantic, that's all." Shelby explained.
Spencer looked at Shelby miserably. "So you've never liked a girl before?"
Shelby frowned. "No. Sorry bud."
"So there's something wrong with me?" Spencer asked sadly.
"No, absolutely not. You just... Have a crush on you're best friend." Shelby stated. "Honestly, that part doesn't surprise me as much as it should. I mean, I assumed that you were heteroromantic, but... If you were going to like a guy, it'd be Dennis."
Spencer's eyebrows furrowed. "What?"
"Well, he's always flirting with you and stuff. And even if Dennis doesn't like you like that, it's not usually... Normal, for a guy to be so okay with it- especially a greysexual." Shelby pointed out.
"What... Are you saying?" Spencer asked slowly.
"I'm saying, I don't think these feelings you're feeling are all that sudden, you know? Maybe this is the first time you've been sexually attracted to him-"
"Oh my God." Spencer covered his face again at the state, his skin flushing deeper.
"Er, sorry, physically attracted- maybe you've been romantically attracted to him. At least, I think that's the case." Shelby shrugged.
"How so?" Spencer muttered through his hands.
"Well... Remember when we did the play Hamilton, not the one with Hayden as Hamilton, but the one with Dennis."
"Yes..."
"Well, there was this one moment in the song Cabinet Battle #2..."
Reader turned and gathered his stuff on his desk, along with a quill, ink, and parchment for the President's order.
Suddenly, Spencer's voice sounded from behind him. "Did you forget Newfield?"
Reader turned, raising a brow. "What?"
Spencer's glared at him. It was a look of disgust rather than anger. "Have you an ounce of regret? You accumulate debt, you accumulate power, yet in their hour of need, you forget."
Reader's face flushed slightly, angered by the comment. "Newfield's a smart man, he'll be fine. And before he was your friend, he was mine. If we try to fight in every revolution in the world, we'd never stop, where do we draw the line?"
Spencer shook his head. "So quick-witted."
Reader shrugged with a smile. "Alas, I admit it."
Spencer smiled as well, walking towards Dennis. "I bet you were quite a lawyer."
Dennis looked Ferrell up and down in confusion, taking a step back back. "My defendants got acquitted."
Spencer looked at his fingernails. "Yeah. Well, someone oughta remind you."
"What?" Reader challenged.
Spencer quickly hooked his staff under Reader's chin and pull him close so that they were practically nose-to-nose. "You're nothing with Beilschmidt behind you." Ferrell hissed.
"Reader." Beilschmidt's voice called from somewhere else in the room.
Ferrell's eyes widened in mock shock as he gasped, Reader's face flushing as the curly-haired brunette smiled. "Daddy's callin~"
"You and Dennis getting that close... That was not scripted." Shelby explained. "And I would know. Dreamz and I wrote that script ourselves."
Spencer looked away. "So? I was in the moment."
"Exactly! You were in the moment, meaning when you did it, you weren't thinking, you were acting on instinct. What you did was something you did purely on emotion, and the move was a bit imitate in my opinion." Shelby explained.
Spencer looked at her in horror. "So I've been biromantic this whole time?"
"Well, it's not something that just randomly pops up." Shelby stated.
Spencer laid back on the couch in defeat. "They're going to hate me."
"Who?"
"Amelia. Dennis. Probably Julchen too. I can't see her being too happy with me being in love with her boyfriend."
"In love?" Shelby inquired, wiggling her brows.
"I've been reflecting on my feeling for like 5 days straight okay? Leave me alone." He muttered in defeated. "What am I supposed to do now?"
"Well, I would start by breaking this to your girlfriend." Shelby stated, pulling her legs up and crossing them. "Whether you have feelings for Dennis or not, you're still in a relationship. You either need to come clean to Amelia and tell her that even though you like Dennis, it's not going anywhere, or... You need to break up with her."
Spencer remained silent.
"Are you going to break up with her?"
"I've thought about it." Spencer admitted.
Shelby rocked back slightly. "Well, honestly, if it's crossed your mind that's you're best course of action, maybe you should then."
"And what if I break up with her and I tell Dennis and he gets really creeped out and never wants to see me again?" Spencer whispered.
Shelby looked at him sadly. "Well, unfortunately, that's a possibility. It's up to you to decide if that's what you're going to do."
"I hate making decisions..." Spencer whined.
"I know. Me too." Shelby frowned. "Whatever happens, you always have me, dude."
"Thanks Shelbs." Spencer stated, turning and hugging her. She returned the gesture.
A few minutes after Spencer left, her phone started ringing.
"Hey Den." She said, her voice small.
"Shelby! Has Spencer left yet? What did he say?" Dennis demanded frantically.
"He... Laid some pretty heavy stuff on me dude." Shelby stated.
"... Like what?"
"You'll find out soon enough." She stated miserably, hanging up.
