CXII. Ignorance and secrets

"This is sooooooo hard." Alfred complained as he and Poland walked up and down the aisles of Valentine's gifts and cards. Both boys were searching for a gift for their partner, and they decided to tackle it together to keep each other from buying something stupid. "I got the girl a dog for Christ's sake- not much I can do to top it."

"I thought you and Shelby agreed not to celebrate Valentine's Day? She's going to be mad if you buy her a present." Poland reminded him as he read a card, and then put it back, unimpressed.

"Yeahhhh, but I want to be the best boyfriend ever! I don't want any of the other guys she's been with to even come close to how awesome I am!" Alfred exclaimed, examining the pile of life sized stuffed bears.

"She's never had other boyfriends." Poland stated as he continued investigating the aisles.

Alfred glanced at the Pole in surprise. "Wait, really?"

"Well yeah. She doesn't really form connections like that."

"Really?" Alfred was more so excited than confused. He liked the idea of being the only real boyfriend Shelby's ever had; that made him even more unique.

"Well, yeah, that kind of what, like, comes along with being greysexual in the world we live in today." Poland said rather harshly, semi-annoyed with the American's pestering.

Alfred paused, looking at Feliks with confusion. "... Greysexual?"

Poland's eyes widened as he realized what he said. "I totally wasn't supposed to say that."

"What does that even mean?" Alfred pressed.

"It's- ah- I shouldn't say anything else." Feliks seemed a bit flustered now. "Shelby didn't want you to know yet- she wanted to tell you herself- just, like, forget I said anything!" He snapped. "She should be telling you this- not me!"

"Okay, dude, chill. We can just... Keep shopping." Alfred reassured him with a relaxed grin, but as soon as Feliks turned away, relieved, the smile dropped.

As soon as he got home, Alfred sat down and took out his phone, going to Google.

What does it mean to be greysexual?

He clicked on the first article.

Greysexual is a type of sexual attraction under the ace umbrella, or rather, lack there of. Greysexual is a sexuality that someone identifies with if they have an overall lack of sexual attraction or sexual desire, though they may every once and awhile. It's not to be confused demisexual, which is where someone feels sexual attraction only after forming a strong connection with them.

He scrolled down to find another article, titled, "Stop it with this Greysexual bullshit"

It was a tumblr rant.

I'm so sick of people making up sexualities that don't exist so that they feel unique. As an asexual, the fact that is this term exists makes me so mad. There is no such thing as being greysexual. You either feel sexual attraction or you don't. End of story.

Alfred's furrowed his brows and read through the comments.

I think it's ironic that LQBT fights for the equality of all sexualities and genders, but you disclude certain people. People create terms for their sexual identity when they don't feel that existing ones fit them. No likes to not fit in a group or have a label, as sad as that is. They don't it for attention or to feel unique, and if some do, then they're in the minority.

I agree. If they feel sexual attraction every once in a while, then that takes them out of the ace umbrella. They're likely trying to cover up the fact that they feel sexual attraction towards people they don't want to feel something for. Example, a guy claims to be greysexual because people notice he isn't really into chasing after girls. In reality, he's gay, but is embarrassed of it or in denial over it.

Alfred reread that last comment over and over again.

"Alfred, I'm home!" Shelby shouted as she entered the house, her backpack causing her to hutch over slightly as she hugged her books to her chest, her gym bag clutched in her fist. Apollo bounded up to her in greeting, causing her to laugh and put down her stuff by the door as she laughed, taking his face in her hands and his cheeks. "Hi puppy! Oh, you look so handsome, today! Yes you do!"

Alfred appeared in the living room, leaning against the doorway and crossing his arms. It took Shelby a second to notice he was there while she rubbed Apollo and laid down with him on the floor, rubbing his belly and chest. "Oh, hey Alfie. How was your day?"

"We're done."

Shelby laughed. "Done with what?"

"We're done. Me and you. This relationship. It's over."

She sat up, Apollo crawling into her lap as she did so, her face falling in confusion. "Are... You okay?"

Alfred's blue eyes, which usually sparkled and shined, were shaded and dark. He glared at the girl with malice. "You're using me to hide the fact that you're a lesbian."

Shelby stared at him in complete disbelief. "What are you even talking about? I'm not-"

"Poland told me you're greysexual. But I know what that really means." Alfred growled. "I'm not dumb. It's not even a real thing. You're just trying to convince yourself that you're not gay. And I wouldn't be lied to and sit in this fake world you've created for yourself."

At this, Shelby glared at him. "Alfred, you have no idea what you're saying. That's what greysexual means at all. If you would just it down and relax, I can explain it to you."

"SHUT UP! Stop trying to lie to me!" He yelled, his eyes misting over. "I trusted you! I've been lied to a lot these past 200 years. People have left me, insulted me, bombed my harbor, shot my soldiers, burned my flag, and killed my citizens. I thought you were different. I thought you loved me."

"I- I do love you!" Shelby stuttered. "Alfred, I haven't lied to you. I-"

"Then why didn't did you tell me? Isn't hiding something a form of lying?" Alfred challenged, fire flickering behind his harsh irises. "You used me to lie. I should have realized it. That's why you don't like being kissed or hugged. It's why you didn't like me at first. We're just friends, remember? Did that change when you realized you could use me to hide how you really feel from everyone else? You're lying to yourself. And I won't be apart if it of anymore." He hissed, storming off into the hallway, and returning with two bags. He tossed them over to Shelby, who was staring at the floor in disbelief, tears trailing down her cheeks. The bags were followed by Apollo's leash, and the dog jumped up, barking excitedly at the idea of taking a walk.

"Get out of my house." Alfred stated.

"Alfred..." She tried to speak, but choked on a sob. She gritted her teeth and nodded. "If that's what you want." She gathered her stuff as quickly as she could, along with her school material, and hooked up Apollo to his leash, who pulled her enthusiastically towards the door. "Just-" She covered her mouth, cringing as if something inside her was causing her unbearable pain, "None- none of it was a lie. You- you were the only person I ever fell in love with."

With that, she stepped outside into the frigid Michigan air.

_____________

Soooo... yeah. Some of you already knew I was greysexual. Some of you didn't. Now you know.

And yeah, incase you were wondering, those "articles" I wrote about in this Drabble were based off of real posts I found. So that was a little tough to research for this Drabble.

Anyways, I'm not trying to hide anything and I'm not in denial or anything. I really am just grey. I don't feel comfortable considering myself asexual, but I can't recall a person I was ever attracted to in that way. I still find guys attractive, but I don't feel anything towards it, if that makes any sense.

To Sam and Thaovy, I was going to tell you guys a long time ago, but I planned on telling Jenna first, and something happened and I wimped out on telling her cause I wasn't sure she'd understand, which sort of left you guys in the dark. And I apologize for that.
