FINDING JOHN.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

━━━━━━━☆☆━━━━━━━

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀   ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
John B was nowhere to be found.

Sonny would know. She'd chased his trail around the whole island and still, he was nowhere.

Other than a 'borrowed' bicycle and a faint blood stain near the chain fence on the main street, there was no sign of John B anywhere. It was like he vanished — disappeared in a puff of smoke. And with Cheryl and Big Head on the prowl in an attempt to find him, Sonny couldn't even ask around and see who had spotted him last.

After a while, Sonny accepted her defeat.

She wasn't going to find him. Not yet, anyway, not if DSC were nearby. He wouldn't risk getting caught. Unless Cheryl made tracks, John B wouldn't resurface.

He would remain invisible to the island, as much as a four hundred million dollar sum was to the Royal Merchant. She would have to leave him be.

What else could she do?

If John B didn't want to be found then he didn't want to be found. Simple as that. Sonny wasn't going to force him out of hiding. That would be unnecessary, not to mention a whole lot of effort, and Sonny didn't think it would help anybody. Sure, if she saw him then she'd throw him into the trunk of her car, but until that time came, she'd let him be. Hunting him down would only raise suspicions and if Cheryl chose to outstay her welcome longer than she already had, then Sonny and John B couldn't afford to be suspicious— for both their sakes. It would be their asses on the line.

That said, Sonny still decided it was best to check one more spot before she giving up. It was the only other place that she figured he could be hiding, the only other place with a boy so loyal he would harbour a DCS fugitive.

HEYWARD'S SEAFOOD

But before Sonny could even park up outside, she'd already slammed on the brakes.

Why the fuck was Topper's car there?

Instead of pulling up outside, Sonny drove straight past the store and down the street. She would recognise Topper's Jeep anywhere and that had most certainly been his — parked just across the street from Heyward's. Sonny could only hope that he'd failed to recognise her red Fiat as she took the next right, wrapping back around the strip of own-brand stores and into the alley behind them.

Sonny wasn't sure what was going on, but she knew it didn't sit right with her. Why was Topper parked outside Heyward's? Why was he even in the Cut?

Topper didn't like the Cut. Actually, he hated it.

He hated seafood too, mostly because he was deathly allergic to shrimp, and he really hated Pope Heyward. So when Sonny weighed it all up, Topper literally had zero reason to be there. Not even one. Not unless...

    "Fuck!"

Sonny came to an abrupt stop.

   He knew.

The girl raked a hand through her hair, chewing on her lip so hard that the cut reopened.

Topper knew. He had to know. That was the only reason he'd be there — because he knew the only person who would sink his boat would be Pope Heyward.

Sure, Sonny hadn't told Topper as much, but it wasn't that hard to guess. It was revenge — for caving in Pope's face, for treating Pogues like trash, for everything. When he'd asked her if the Pogues had done it, he'd already known. Sonny hadn't needed to say anything.

And now he was taunting him.

Showing up at his father's work just to scare him, to try and spook him as they mulled over a suitable punishment for him. It was technically a violation of jungle law to hit back when it was them who had hit first, but maybe Topper and Rafe didn't see it that way. JJ had held a gun to Topper's head, which was a consequence of his own actions, but he was stubborn. When he and Rafe were together, it only got worse. They had enough screws loose that together they could convince themselves that Santa was real, so all this being the Pogues fault was easy. Rafe and Topper always had to finish their fights, even the ones they started. That was why they jumped Pope, and it was why they were scaring him now. To finish it.

But Sonny didn't plan on just sitting aside and watching it go down. Not a chance.

First thing's first, she had to save Pope.

And luck must've been on her side for the first time that day. Because, like he knew she was out there, Pope Heyward came stumbling out the backdoor.

"Heyward!"

Pope tripped over his own feet when Sonny beeped her car horn at him. He was terrified, swinging around on shaky legs, clearly expecting it to be someone else. Someone like Topper, Rafe and Kelce. He'd seen definitely them.

Upon realising it was only her, his stressed face melted into one of relief, and he took no time in sprinting over to the car. His clutched his cap to his head as he ducked into the vehicle without a second thought, gasping for air as he looked at her, eyes wide and blinking.

"You just saved my life!" He cried.

"Buckle up, loser."

He did as told and Sonny quickly reversed out of the alley and took a left, the opposite direction of where Topper's car was parked. A stand off was the last thing they needed. This wasn't the Wild West, and Sonny didn't really feel it would be beneficial to run them off road. Honestly, in her little Fiat, it was unlikely she would do any real damage. Sonny suddenly wished she'd taken her dad's truck.

She kept checking her mirrors, just in case Topper decided he was observant today, but her eyes flitted back over to Pope every few seconds. He was still wheezing.

"Breathe, dude!" She hissed.

The last thing she needed was for him to vomit.

"Breathe?!" He looked at her like she was insane for even suggesting it. "Breathe?!"

Sonny sighed, "It's not that bad—"

"Not that bad?! Are you insane?! That was the whole death squad, Sonny!" He cried, his words more like squeaks stuck at the back of his throat. Sonny frowned, death squad? "He knows we sunk his boat!" Pope clutched at his chest, "They all know and they're gonna kill us!"

Alright, maybe it was that bad.

Still, Sonny shook her head in a futile attempt to calm him down. With John B disappearing, Pope's face getting caved in, the gold not being there and all the other shit they had going on, she figured it would only lengthen their list of problems if he went into cardiac arrest in the passenger side of her car. It would lead to a hospital trip and some awkward explanations, and while Sonny was no good at comforting people, she knew trying was the better option.

"They're not gonna kill you," she told him.

    "But—"

"Not if I have anything to do with it," Sonny shot him an unusually reassuring look. "Okay?"

He watched her with owlish eyes, but eventually nodded his head like an obedient puppy. Once he sucked in a deep breath and let it out, his movements less erratic, Sonny mirrored him and took a left turn.

"Now calm the fuck down," she said, shaking her head as if it would stop her headache. She needed time to think. "You're literally giving me anxiety,"

Pope murmured an apology.

They were quiet for a short while. Only the tap of Sonny's hands on the steering wheel filled the space.

He glanced at her, "What do we do?"

"First," Sonny spoke with determination in her eyes, "We gather our numbers."

"JJ," he muttered.

"And Carrera," she nodded, "Booker's MIA."

"MIA?"

"Long story," Sonny shrugged it off, "But we'll need all we have. If they hit—" she watched his eyes flash with panic and shot him a look, "—which they won't..." he calmed a bit. It let her continue, "We'll have to travel in groups. Be at the ready."

While Pope nodded, murmuring it back to her, she tried to decide what Topper's thought process would be. Well, Sonny tried to determine Rafe's thought process — there was no way Topper had gone to spook Pope at work without Rafe's words of encouragement, and Pope said it was the whole death squad. That meant Topper, Rafe and Kelce were all masterminding one plan together.

"They jumped you once, Pope. They'll do it again if they get the chance," she glanced from Pope to the road, "Rafe is unhinged— okay? If they haven't already lost their shit then they're just buying their time."

He gawped at her.

"I thought you said they wouldn't hit?"

"I lied."

"Fuck..." Pope whined, "I'm gonna die, aren't I?"

"Not on my watch," Sonny promised him. She found that she was making lots of those lately. She wasn't sure she liked the responsibility that came with them. "Now," she said, eyes squinted, "Where's a girl find JJ Maybank?"

————

JJ was way easier to find than John B.

Not surprising, since he wasn't on the run from DCS and a cop with a huge head and a taser. Though, JJ probably should have been in hiding — seeing as, when Sonny and Pope both found him, he wore a pair of earmuffs and had Scooter's gun in his hand. The stolen gun.

   Sonny could've strangled him.

Just how reckless was he? To be practising his aim in broad daylight out in the woods?

Then again, someone who wasn't reckless wouldn't have a gun anyway — not one they'd stolen from the safe of a dead man, and not when they were underage.

The least he could do was lay low and hide that shit in a place nobody would think to look. Not go out shooting it at a teddybear where somebody could see him. JJ Maybank was another level of reckless.

    "JJ!"

Sonny sighed, watching Pope jump out the car.

She suddenly wasn't sure JJ was their best bet. Maybe they would've been better off going to Kiara first. That said, they had explicitly decided not to tell her about Topper's boat; she had no idea what was happening, and they wanted to keep it that way as long as they could. Kiara would find out the truth eventually but hopefully, by then, they would have some sort of plan to keep Pope Heyward alive.

    "JJ!" Pope yelled again.

"What was that?" JJ mumbled, tilting the gun at the bear as he searched for a threatening stance. He didn't hear Pope on his left. "That's what I thought, man..."

"Hey," Sonny tried her luck, "Asshole!"

   That time, JJ heard.

He pulled the earmuffs down to his neck and span around to look at them, brow arched. "The Princess and the Pope, I wasn't expecting you."

   Sonny rolled her eyes, "Surprise."

"Nice car," he glanced behind her, smirking. "You know, I didn't take you for a Fiat500 girl, but—"

"They know!" Pope blurted out, cutting him off.

   JJ frowned, "What?"

"They know!" Pope hissed again, chewing on his nails as he paced back and forth. JJ didn't understand at first but, after a moment, he realised who they were. He sighed, putting down the gun after pulling the safety.

"Alright— chill, bro." He unstrapped his gloves and shook his head. In his eyes, Pope was being dramatic — which was true, but Sonny couldn't really find it within herself to blame him. While he was being dramatic, he wasn't wrong. Topper, Rafe and Kelce totally knew and they were likely plotting his murder. "They don't know shit, 'kay?"

"No," Sonny grimaced. JJ glowered, but she didn't get the memo. "They totally know shit."

His jaw locked, "Not helping, princess."

"Topper knows I sunk his boat!" Pope cried out while they glared at each other. They turned back to him, watching him pace. "He knows, JJ!"

"How d'you know they know?" JJ quizzed him.

Pope looked at him like he was stupid, brows jumping up to his hairline. He threw out his hands, "'Cause Rafe and Topper posted outside of Heyward's and totally mad dogged me, bro!"

   JJ scoffed at him.

"Dude, they didn't mad dog you—"

"No, they totally did."

"Again with the not helping." JJ pointed at Sonny, earning him a sour look in return. A moment passed before he let out a lengthy breath, ruffling his blonde hair as Pope walked back and forth in front of him. "Will you calm down and get a grip man? They don't know shit."

"They have cameras!" Pope said, "They coulda seen us!"

JJ shook his head quickly, "There was no power, how could they have seen you?"

"It's Figure 8! They got generators!"

As if to question it, JJ tilted his head at Sonny. She sent him a look that told him he'd rather not know the answer. She had originally assumed the cameras weren't working, and she now knew that might have been an oversight on her behalf. She was tempted to blame the Pogues. Sonny had always been good at sneaking around until they came along. Usually she'd think of something like generators.

"Look, they don't give scholarships to kids who vengefully sink boats— okay?" Pope stressed, rubbing his face. "It's not a good look on my transcript—"

"Enough with the regret, bro!" JJ jumped up and clamped one hand on his shoulder, keeping him firmly in place. Pope's eyes latched onto his, completely quiet. "C'mon! They caved your face in, Pope!"

His serious tone was enough for Sonny to watch on silently, unable to say anything. She had never seen JJ look so stern. It was weird to see him step up and take control — she thought that was John B's role because no one else had it in them. She was wrong, clearly. JJ had it in him and maybe even more. The thought intrigued Sonny greatly.

"They hit us? We hit them. It's law of the jungle, man." He reminded, "Now, if any Kooks come up to you, and they ask if you had anything to do with it you walk up to 'em, look 'em right in the eye..." he gestured from his eyes to Pope's, a firm grip on his neck,"...and?"

   Pope breathed out.

"Deny the living shit out of it."

"That's right!" The blonde praised him, nodding. He was pleased, "Deny, deny, deny."

Deny, deny, deny.

Was that the best plan he had?

Sonny might've told him that denial wasn't an actual plan, let alone a good one, had she something better to suggest. But she didn't. She actually had nothing for once.

After all, talking to Topper wasn't exactly an option— not after she'd thrown a pepper grinder at him. Time for talking was long over, and now Sonny had to reap the consequences of her decisions. She should've told him they hadn't sunk his boat when she had the chance.

"But just for safety," JJ added on, "We don't go anywhere without protection."

Sonny and Pope followed his finger that pointed at the gun he'd stolen. Her stomach stirred.

He looked between them, expecting one to start yelling as the other one fainted. But, surprisingly, they didn't. Actually, they didn't do anything.

"Right?" He asked, watching them closely.

They exchanged a look, silently.

"Right," Pope muttered, finally looking away from Sonny. JJ clapped him on the back and raised a brow at her. Like he was waiting for her to tell him he was an idiot, that this was a bad idea, that he would only get them killed if he brought his stolen gun wherever they went

   And she wanted to. Badly.

But then she looked at Pope's helpless little face and before Sonny even knew it, she was nodding.

————

"Being out in public isn't discreet, you know."

"What else you want us to do?" JJ asked, "Hide away? Let 'em think they scared us?"

Sonny rolled her eyes.

"Anything but this," she hissed, looking around with a deep frown. There were too many people about. Sonny already felt suffocated. "I hate old movies."

He scoffed, "S'there anything you do like, princess?"

"I like watching Heyward walk around while he's still got kneecaps," she said, sending him a sarcastic smile that he was quick to return. "'Cause they'll be first to go when the Jonas Brothers get their hands on him."

JJ just stared at her for a moment.

"You worry too much," he then told her, slapping the rim of her cap— his cap. Sonny hadn't even realised she was still wearing it. Still wore his jumper on, too. "Lighten up, dude."

Lighten up?

Sonny scowled, yanking the cap up and out of her eye line as she flipped him the bird.

JJ just chuckled, unbothered, watching as she adjusted the cap and walked away from him. After a beat, he scurried to catch up with her, even when her eyes narrowed in warning. Don't piss me off they screamed. JJ could only smile innocently and whistle under his breath. After all, he couldn't make her those kinds of promises.

"I'm so glad that they're still doing this!"

"Makes one of us," Sonny muttered.

Kiara didn't hear her. Sonny didn't think so, anyway, since she continued to smile widely as she searched for a good spot nearby, "Keep calm, carry on. Back to OBX life, y'know? Aren't you glad I made you guys come?"

Pope pulled a face, "Ecstatic."

"My couch was pretty comfy," JJ shrugged off.

"I don't wanna be here."

Kiara rolled her eyes at Sonny. It was one of the few things she'd said since Kiara forced her into the car and — in Sonny's words — held her hostage. Really, Kiara only wanted them to catch the movie the island was showing to let loose. It was no secret that their morning had been disappointing, what with a severe lack of gold, and Kiara wanted to establish their usual routine. And, while Sonny was never apart of that before, she was a Pogue now. It was time to treat her like one. Even if the whole thing still felt a little weird.

After finding a spot, where Pope, JJ and Sonny dumped all their belongings indelicately, Kiara declared she was heading off to buy a drink. They just nodded.

The minute she was gone, Pope started to squirm.

"We're out of the green zone, man!" He hissed, wide eyed with sweat on his brow.

JJ sighed, "Dude, tranquilo— okay?"

"We're in the middle of Kook—landia!" Pope retorted. He was right. The island's Summer Movie Series took place in Kook territory each year, which had conveniently put them right in the middle of a war zone — and the perfect spot for ambush. Anyone could find them here.

Not that anyone would. At least, Sonny didn't think so. She and Topper always bitched about how boring it was to watch the old movies they always showed, so it seemed unlikely that him, Rafe and Kelce would choose an outdoor movie theatre to start a fight. It was an event intended for kids, and she was sure they'd rather be found dead than seen there. Then again, they would go to great lengths for a fight.

"This is the last place I wanna be," Pope sighed.

"Newsflash, nerd." Sonny said, "No one wants to be here. You're not special, Pope."

He shot her an exasperated look.

"You're gonna be fine." She said after an eye roll. She was still working on the whole comforting people thing. "Look, Topper hates this shit and Rafe is too much of a redflag to be around this many kids. And Kelce... Kelce is boring as shit. They won't be here. Nothing is gonna happen."

Pope nodded slowly, sucking in a breath. "Okay..."

"Just saw Rafe."

They all whipped around to look at Kiara, eyes wide as she handed both boys a can of soda. She somehow didn't seem to notice their bewildered stares.

"He said, and I quote," Kiara cleared her throat, "Tell your boy we know what he did."

   Well fuck.

Okay, so maybe Sonny was wrong.

"I mean..." Kiara took a seat on the picnic blanket she'd brought, watching Pope start to fidget again. "What is that?"

He gulped, "Where— where is he?"

"Back there," she slung a thumb over her shoulder.

And she was right. When they turned around, Rafe was sat there alright, towards the back of the crowd with a smug grin on his lips. Topper was sat on his left, his glaring eyes planted firmly on Pope's head, and Kelce sat on his right, grinning like he had won the lottery. Sonny tried to avoid meeting Topper's stare but as she turned back around, she felt his hot gaze stick to the side of her face.

"Great, the whole death squad!"

Pope squealed when JJ grabbed his head and turned him away, "Don't stare, bro!"

"But—" Pope looked at Sonny, "You said—"

She shrugged, "I was wrong, sue me."

"Alright, I'm just warning you," JJ cracked open his soda, a frown on his lips. His jaw was feathered and, for the first time, he actually looked worried. "If they corner me? I'm coming out swinging, okay? Slice and dicin'. I'm on edge, right now. If that doesn't work," he held up his bag and waved it, "I got this right here."

Sonny wondered if, given the chance, JJ would shoot Rafe, Topper and Kelce. Sure, he was a hot head, but she wasn't so sure he was a killer.

"Yeah, yeah..." Pope nodded.

"So, we just gotta stay in the group. They can't get us in the group," JJ clarified. "Like a school of fish."

"Stay in the school," Pope murmured as JJ clapped a hand on his shoulder and gave it a squeeze. He kept reciting it, and Sonny couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Stay in the school, can't leave the school. Stay in the..."

"I'm sorry, JJ— please tell me you did not bring a gun here," Kiara hissed, angry eyes darting between the boys. "JJ, there's little kids here! You can't just—!"

"No, Kie!" He groaned loudly, like his volume would do a good job at convincing her. JJ wasn't the best liar. Well, really, that wasn't true. He was a good liar, just not when everybody already knew he was lying. "I didn't bring the gun here. Look, everything's fine, okay?"

"Wow— thank you," Kiara smiled at him, sarcastically. He rolled his eyes. "That's really convincing. I really love that, JJ."

Pope shrank away from her, nervously.

"Kie..."

"Founding principle, you guys: no secrets amongst Pogues. What is Rafe talking about?"

"Look..." Pope leant closer, "It might go down tonight."

She blinked at him.

"What does that mean?" Her tone was incredulous, unable to understand what they were talking about. "It might go down tonight...? What did y'all do?"

JJ, Sonny and Pope exchanged a look.

Deny, deny, deny.
