Anything For You
(Okay, I'll admit, I enjoyed reading Twilight, but can we please leave EdwardxBella out of Gotham?)
"I think I'm in love," Edward said with a shy smile.
Oswald felt his heart skip a beat, but a second later he reminded himself of the situation and answered as calmly as he could, "With a woman you've only known for a few hours?"
It was somewhat of a relief that Ed didn't notice the hurt expression on his face, but for the most part it only hurt him more knowing that he didn't. Perhaps Oswald was just that good at hiding his true feelings. Whatever the case, Ed kept that all-too-big grin on his face and remained blissfully unaware.
"Yes, well, the heart keeps its own time," Edward answered simply.
A much more obvious shadow crossed over Oswald's features, but he instinctively covered it up with a confident smile long before Ed could have noticed. Or perhaps not.
"What's wrong?"
Oswald's smile fell the slightest bit. "Nothing, I hope you have a wonderful time with Isabella." His voice held much more venom than he had intended.
Edward put a hand on his shoulder, forcing Oswald to face him as he persisted, "What's wrong? I can clearly tell that something is bothering you."
"I'm fine, Ed," Oswald hissed. He inwardly cursed the sole tear that betrayed him a second later.
"Oswald," Ed said seriously, looking him deep in the eye, "You can tell me anything. I said I would do anything for you."
The Penguin glared back and answered, "I can't be bought but I can be stolen with a glance. I'm worthless to one but priceless to two, what am I?"
For the first time since Oswald had met him, Edward Nygma seemed genuinely perplexed. Of course he knew the answer right away; he had asked Oswald the same riddle not too long ago himself. It was the exact meaning of the answer that escaped his brilliant mind. Oswald bit his lip for a moment, wondering if he could really say it. But the truth was already out, and he needed to clarify or the situation would only be made worse.
He finally whispered in a somewhat tense voice, "I love you, Ed...I love you."
There didn't seem to be a reaction at first. Was Ed still trying to fully understand what he was saying, or was he just trying to come up with a way to let him down easy? It looked like Oswald needed to clarify further. So he did the very next thing he could think of, and kissed Ed. He felt desperate, like if he couldn't convince him to stay now then Edward would leave forever. It was a horrible gamble, since Oswald figured he could hardly pass as a good kisser, but he had to try.
Since it clearly seemed as though he couldn't convey his feelings with words, he did his best to show his desperation with his body. With one careful hand he stroked Ed's cheek, slowly trailing his fingers over his cheekbone and down the length of his jaw. He was certain that this amazing touch wouldn't last long, and fairly confident that it would destroy the precious friendship that they had, but Oswald wanted to make it last, at least. And, though he knew he was losing his friend, he couldn't come to regret his decision.
Oswald's hands fell slowly to settle on Ed's chest as he braced himself for the moment that they would be forced apart. He was so tense that he didn't notice the hand moving around to settle on the small of his back. It wasn't until he felt another hand sliding up into his hair that he realized that Ed was kissing him back, and he whimpered quietly in surprise-and relief. The taller man responded by pulling him closer, pressing their bodies together and seemingly forcing all the air out of his lungs.
All time was completely lost to Oswald. It felt like hours to him, yet only seconds at the same time. A tear welled in the corner of his eye. A minute later (or ten?) it rolled down his cheek. Was he crying because he didn't want it to end? Or because finally, for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, someone wasn't pushing him away or trying to hurt him? But a minute later they pulled away the slightest bit at the same time. But they kept their foreheads together, lips almost brushing and breaths stirring the same small space of air.
After a heartbeat, Ed's steady hand brushed away the trail of tears on Oswald's cheek and whispered softly, "I would do anything for you Oswald, I already told you...you can always count on me. I just...I never knew you thought of me that way."
"Oh Ed," Oswald answered as he brushed away the fresh tears that came, "I do, I love you. I think I've loved you for a long time, and I finally decided to admit it to myself. And to you. After what you said about love being my weakness..."
"I know," Ed said simply.
"I love you Ed," Oswald whispered hoarsely, his hands beginning to tremble slightly.
He clenched his eyes shut to hold back the tears that threatened, which was hard to do when Edward held his hands in his to calm their shaking. Oswald hated how vulnerable he felt, how he was so easily responding to simple touches from this one man. When he started shaking again, Ed kissed him and all of his worries washed immediately away and became distant memories in mere moments.
Then Ed's lips moved aside to Oswald's ear, and he murmured, "I love you too, Oswald."
"Then...stay with me?" he had meant to sound more commanding, more sure of himself, but it came out as a weak plea.
"Of course," Edward said immediately, not even seeming to notice. "You can always count on me."
