God, I'm surrounded by idiots. I think to myself as I walk past girls squealing about their summers and idiot Jocks kicking a fúbol in the fucking hallway.

One of them shoulder me as they walk by.

Turning around, he glares. "Watch it, di Angelo!"

I nearly jump the guy until-

"Don't, Nico!" Hazel, my younger sister, hisses at me. "It's the first day, please try to not tarnish your record this early."

"Haz, my record has been tarnished since sixth grade."

"Yeah, but you don't need to make it any worse! You were already yelled at for smoking on school property today. Don't get in any more trouble today. Promise me."

I cross my arms over my chest and stare at her challengingly. She matches my stare, refusing to back down.

As we stare, I begin to take in my sister's features, yet again. She's only a freshman, but she seems so much older. She really is beautiful with her mocha skin and citrine hair. She's small and thin. Her nose is wide and it adds to her beauty. She has startlingly bright eyes, seeing as they're golden. Her lips are full and her cheekbones are high. Her eyebrow raises in a silent, challenging question.

Finally I groan in defeat, rolling my eyes and looking away. "Fine. I'll try."

Her smile is absolutely blinding. "Good. C'mon, we need to find our locker."

As we walk, she reaches up and tangles her hand in my long, unruly black hair and plays with it. It's soothing; one of my favorite things she does.

The walk is long and boring but Haz makes it fun by whispering funny commentaries about people in the halls.

---

When we get to our locker, I open it and begin to put my stuff in it.

"Hey," Percy Jackson comes up to us. He's the captain of the soccer team and an absolute pain in the ass. "I don't think I've seen you around. What's your name?" He asks Hazel.

Immediately, my defenses go up. My back goes rigid, shoulders tight. My fists clench at my sides and a scowl sets on my face. I subconsciously move slightly in front of Hazel.

One thing goes through my mind as Percy watches Hazel: What does this asshole want with my sister?

I give him a criticizing once-over and glare when I make it back to his face.

He's got dark, black hair and ocean-green eyes. I know him, sort of. Major douche and one of the biggest Populars at this school. I can't believe I had a crush on him in eighth grade.

Instinctively, my arm wraps itself around Hazel's shoulders and pulls her close to my side.

Percy sneers at me. "This your boyfriend?"

Hazel glares at him fiercely. "Brother." She snips.

"Ah! I see. Such a resemblance." He mocks. "Anyway. What's your name?"

I watch him give her a scrutinizing once-over and bite his lip in anticipation for... I don't know what. He's obviously attempting to be cute.

"Ha-"

"Don't answer it. Ignore it and it might go away." I grumble lowly.

"What was that, faggot?" His voice is near a growl.

I close my eyes and silently count to ten so I don't break my promise to Hazel and beat the shit out of this prick so early in the day.

"Hey! Don't talk to my brother like that!" Hazel scowls, her hands balling at her sides.

"Don't worry, hun. Nico and I are good friends. Known each other for four years." He sneers at me again before turning his attention to her once again. "So, how about that name?"

"Hazel." She responds coldly.

"Hazel," he repeats. "Why don't you come hang out with me and my friends? Won't make many friends hanging out with this... Thing."

He reaches out for her and grabs her wrist. Immediately, I pull Hazel's wrist away from him and move to push her behind me. She doesn't move the way I want her to and I try to send her an irritated glance for that.

"Don't touch her, creep." I growl.

"I'll do what I want." He snaps.

He grabs her wrist again and starts to pull her away. All the while, she's trying to pull her wrist from his hand and get away.

Out of habit of protecting her, I pull his hand off of hers roughly and push her behind me. She stumbles and I hear her fall over, but I'm too worried about the immediate threat to pay attention to it.

Percy turns back around to yell at me, but my hand is already pulled back. As soon as I see his face, I swing my hand and hit him straight in the nose. I feel the crack under my knuckles. He crumples to the ground from the momentum.

Instantly, half of the soccer team is surrounding us.

"What the hell." Percy groans, holding his nose. The goalie, Jason, comes over and helps him up.

"You alright, bro?" Jason says. Percy shrugs him off and nods.

"This idiot just needs to be taught a lesson." Percy seethes, spitting blood on the floor.

"And who's going to do that? You? I'd like to see you try." I snort, knowing his height just makes it easier to knock him down.

Jason quickly steps between us. "Come on, Perce. It's the beginning of the year. If you fight, you're off the team."

"Ooo, scary. No fúbol for a full six months! How could he live?" I mock him.

"Cut it out, Neeks!" Hazel shrieks.

"Come on, man. Seriously. He's not worth it." Jason mumbles to him.

My fist tightens at my side.

Not worth it, my ass.

Slowly, he relents and the team walks away.

Once they're out of earshot, I turn and crouch in front of Hazel. She's got a few tears on her face, a bruise forming on her wrist, and her hand got scrapped by the floor when she fell.

Concern flashes on my face and she smiles weakly. "You okay?" I ask, brushing stray hairs from her face.

"I'm good. But you broke your promise." She pouts.

I laugh softly and help her up off of the ground.

"I know. I'm sorry." I place a chaste kiss on her forehead. "He put his hands on you though. You know how I am with that, since Dad-"

" I know," She interrupts, looking at the floor.

"Come on, we need to find your class before the bell rings." I smile at her kindly.

Her reply comes with a watery smile and a punch to my shoulder. "What about yours?"

"Haz, I haven't been on time to a class since sixths grade. Don't worry about me; none of the teachers will say anything."

She hesitates for a moment, but eventually nods. "Okay."

---

I get to class half an hour late.

Really, I should've been there only five minutes late, but I made a pitstop at the science labs with the snakes.

A smile spreads across my face as I think about the unlucky girl that's going to find a Bald Python in the bathroom.

I open the door to class and the teacher -- Mr. Dynard -- stops talking.

"Mr. di Angelo. Late. It's the first day, couldn't you try a little harder?" He says, a disappointed look gracing his features.

"Now, Mr. Dynard!" I start with a smirk. "You're starting to sound like my little sister."

"Maybe she's your voice of reason then. Find an empty seat, yeah?"

I look around the class and find that my seat, the one in the back left corner, is taken by the fucktard I punched in the face this morning.

Fucking great. I think. These idiots don't even know where I sit.

I look around again to find an empty seat and the only one open-

Of course it would be right next to the one person I hate more than anyone else in this prison.

Groaning, I walk over and plop down unceremoniously in the seat.

"Hello to you, too, Nico."

"Don't talk to me." I snap.

Who the fuck is he, talking to me like we're friends.

"Damn. I thought, maybe, we could be friends. You know, since we lived next to each other for six years and never so much as talked to each other."

"We were friends. But, you weren't very interested in friendship when I came out and you bullied me for two years."

"Nico-," He starts, his voice sounding remorseful.

"Shut up, Solace."

His jaw snaps shut with a clack and class goes on with an awkward tension between us.
