14. Sun is coming up
"The air was filled with tension. I could see it in their eyes. The sun was coming up."
Elizabeth Decker,
I had planned on hiding in my room, for the rest of my life. The girl in me wanted to hide to run. But the woman in me told me to stand up tall. What happened to me wasn't my fault. It shouldn't have to define me.
But the girl in me won the battle. I been scrubbing my skin for the past hour. It had turned into multiple shades of red and pink. My eyes filled with tears that wouldn't fall. I made multiple mistakes. I made so many stupid mistakes.
I spoke in Spanish.
I got in to deep.
There isn't a way out now. I saw someone get killed right next to me. That should tell me how dangerous Val is. How dangerous this mafia is.
If there was a time to get out. It's now.
My heart was pounding in my chest. I could feel it. The house was quiet. There were more men patrolling the grounds. I haven't seen Valerie in hours. My hair was curly and tangled. I looked in the mirror.
You are destroying yourself Elizabeth. And for what? The one person you came here for is dead.
His gone. And you are destroying yourself over a dead man. Is his family worth your life? I clenched my fist smashing it against the mirror. It was four in the morning. I knew the way out.
But I couldn't leave. Not today. Not with fifty armed men are guarding every single entrance to this mansion. Blood trickled down into the gaps of my fingers. Breathe. I washed away the blood, not caring to fix up my cuts. I grabbed oversized clothing.
I walked out of my room and tiptoed to Ace's office. I heard Val's voice.
"Bold of you to assume I would ever answer to a man. I wont fucking say sorry. What I did wasn't a mistake. It wasn't some moment of weakness. I made a fucking choice and I stand by it. I will not apologised for protecting myself against an animal."
They think, its her who got assaulted? W-why, I didn't understand why she would do that. Why would she go down for something that happened to me. What if they kill her for it. Before I could move away fast enough the door was yanked open by a fuming Val, she had her murder eyes on.
As soon as they landed on me, they softened she looked me over. Nodding her head slightly she walked past me to where I assume her room would be. Ace's eyes landed on me. They weren't grey like Alessio's or Valerie's his were a simple earth brown. Like the tip of a mountain, like my hair colour.
"Why? Why did you buy me? Why did you bring me into this world? Why the fuck-" He laughed.
"You really think, this is the best time to have this talk? And you think I wanted you? I don't fucking want you. I don't even know your name!" Ace took out his anger on me. This, this didn't make any sense. Why spend so much money on me if you didn't even want me. None of this made sense. But before I could say anything.
The air stilled. And it was as if time had stopped. My body sensed it before I could understand it. Its like I wasn't moving fast enough. A round of bullets ripped through the house. There were yells that I couldn't understand, someone had tackled me to the floor.
I could see Val's shoes running down the hall yelling and barking orders, men carrying guns had entered the house. Ace flipped his table over shattering every bit of glass on it. Someone yanked me to the side, as we got covered from the rain of bullets that came down.
"Are you hurt!?" Salvador yelled, his gun was ready in his hands. He had cocked it and began firing.
What?
"Are you hurt?!" He yelled again. Someone was coming up the stairs. Val had shot him twice in the head, right between his eyes. The mans body dropped like a fly. The more she took down the more that came. The sound of bullets shooting ricocheted around the house.
He grabbed my shoulders shaking them. I could see his mouth was moving but nothing was coming out. All I could hear was the sound of bullets. Val looked down on me and scoffed she dropped to her knees and slapped me across the face.
No. Reality slapped me across the face.
"Get the fuck up and fight!" She yelled in my face and its like time started again. I ducked crawling behind a wall as an army of men began trying to access the top hall. She yanked an M16 rifle of the dead mans hand and pushed it into my chest.
"Fight!" She yelled over the sound. She was a few feet away from me, trying to kill as many people as she could, kill them before they could come in. But I had to cover her side, if she wasn't going to get shot.
I grabbed the rifle, reloading it and began shooting. Sal went to help Ace who was struggling with six men kept trying to kill him. I saw Valerie reload as someone got to the top of the stairs.
"Mierida!" She breathed out. She ran towards him, hitting him in the head with the butt of her handgun.
(Shit.)
He went and punched her in the stomach as she jumped wrapping her legs around his neck and pulling all her weight down. She flipped him, as his head were between her legs she tighten her hold as she choked him.
He was reaching for his dagger, grabbing it and slashing her across the arm. She yelled out in pain as he stood up, she jumped up a second after, she jumped up wrapping her legs around him as she head butted him multiple times. A gush of blood came dripping down his nose.
She grabbed the railing of the staircase, flipping her body over the stairs as she hung. I gasped thinking she had fallen too. I got up seeing the mans body at the bottom of the floor, a pool of blood forming around him as she shot him in the head.
"Beth!" She yelled as a few men began shooting at her hands that she was holding herself up with.
I began shooting at them, forcing them to take cover. She pulled herself up, just as a grenade had landed a few feet away from the both of us.
"TAKE COVER!" She yelled, grabbing it and throwing it back as she threw her body at mine, trampling me down and protecting me with her body as the explosion went off. The ceiling from the second floor fell into the men at the end of the hall.
There was a ringing in my ear. I looked up to see Val's face was beaten and covered with blood. Her hair had matted on the blood. I begged her to be alive. I placed my hand on the inside of her wrist breathing a sigh of relief when I felt her pulse.
I pushed her body off making her groan and reach for her blades. There was a piece of metal sticking into her shoulder.
"Go. Go! I will be fine!" She yelled, slowly getting up looking pissed as hell. Her red hair almost blended in with all the blood. I looked down at the staircase to see there was a few men there that were trying to come up. I grabbed the rifle and reloaded shooting across the room at them.
I could escape now. Everyone else is to busy to notice me gone. I walked past the office to see a groaning Salvador, he was shot in the abdomen. Ace was no where to be seen. I looked behind to see Val had gone. His breathing was ragged.
Walk away. Walk away.
I repeated to myself. One less monster in the world Beth. I told myself as I walked down the broken staircase. I began speeding up silently towards the garage door. There was a man as he grinned seeing me, he ran towards me, as I timed my roundhouse kick perfectly to kick him in his jaw sending him flying backwards.
Just before I could get away he grabbed my ankle and pulled me down. He began punching me in the stomach as he got up kicking me in the stomach. I got up as quickly as I could but he slapped me down to my knees. No. He was triple my size. His hand was heavy, I could feel the sting.
He picked me up by the collar of my hoodie and slammed my head into the wall. I kicked him in the chest making him stumble backwards, I went low and swiped at his feet making him drop. I needed something anything. My hand was looking for anything it could find. I could a sharp piece of the broken marble, and stabbed it into this face.
I grabbed the gun that slide away when he dropped me, and pushed the barrel into his chest.
Your killing a man. You know that right? I asked myself. There was blood gushing out from his cheek.
Don't close your eyes. Look him in the eyes. I opened my eyes and pulled the trigger putting two bullets in his heart. My eyes filled with tears as I looked at the broken window to see the sun coming up.
My freedom was slipping with each man dying. Salvador was dying. He was dying alone. My mind taunted me as I took silent steps towards the garage door.
