CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

Tanya sat there at her desk, confusion swirling inside her head while the sky slowly turned the colour of dawn. She couldn't wrap her mind around this accidental discovery.

Given how common and gender neutral the Punjabi names were, she wasn't sure if both the persons were same, but it seemed to be too much of a coincidence.

On the heel of that thought, she remembered another Punjabi name. The waitress at Club Paradiso Nero, Shalini from Kapurthala.

The high class sex club Ilario had taken her to the first time they had been out together. And the resultant argument.

"Why Rio? Why did you take me to a place like that?"

"It was for educational purposes."

"Huh?"

"You have worked with Mateo's department on the Wazisi account, si?"

"Yes." What's that got to do with this?

"Club Paradiso Nero is owned by one of the subsidiaries of the Wazisi Capitals."

The Visconti Empire was somehow connected to the Wazisi Capitals. And by extension, Club Paradiso Nero.

That is why Mateo kept pushing for Wazisi Capitals credit line renewal again and again. That is why no one had raised any red flags while granting the credit line in the first place which was during the time of Giovanni De Russo and it had got renewed again and again without any hiccups. It was Ilario who had first raised any questions.

Giovanni Russo and Andreo Visconti were friends, so much so that their children were engaged to be married. And that was why Ilario was under pressure to approve the proposal for credit limit enhancement. But her boss was sceptical and suspected some foul play.

And because the two families were so close, and his own brother was spearheading the project, Ilario couldn't investigate himself. He needed an outsider to do it for him.

Enter Tanya.

As the morning light slowly seeped through the green leaves of the laurel tree outside her window, Tanya sat at her desk, contemplating her next move.

Did she go to the club again, to see what she could find about Gurminder Chadda? She bet if she could get Shalini alone, she'd say something useful.

Or did she go to Ilario with her findings till now? What if he doesn't want to hear about his father-in-law's involvement, however much it is?

What if he didn't accord any importance to it, terming it a coincidence?

What if it really was a coincidence and Ilario was already aware of Wazisi Capitals being somehow involved with Visconti Empires? That was plausible, because he had asked Tanya to spy on Mateo, not Apollonia.

Or, what if the whole thing was a fluke and Tanya would end up being a self-sabotaging fool if she went to Ilario for such a small matter?

The effect of being awake the whole night was taking a toll on her. Her head was buzzing with so many contradictory thoughts, and Tanya felt completely overwhelmed.

She decided to get a shot of caffeine to wake her up. So she went to her kitchen and put on the kettle. The time it took for the water to start boiling, she went and sat on her bed, just staring at the kettle spouting off little puffs of vapour.

The next thing she knew, she was sprawled on her bed face down, the phone ringing shrilly from where it sat on her desk.

She woke up slowly, the loud noise doing nothing to help her get her bearings after such a deep sleep. She squinted to look at the clock.

Four o'clock.
