CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

Tanya was in her own world. She hadn't realised how much of resentment she had inside her that her parents and her boss thought she was incompetent. That she was a good for nothing girl who had other strengths beside the ones that actually matter. She was never one of those people who just sat and brooded about what other people thought about her. She was a go getter sort of person. So her botheration of what Ilario thought of her surprised her.

She brushed her teeth and prepared for bed. Even fifteen minutes after she doused the light and wrapped herself in her cosy blanket, she was unable to sleep, so she woke up. Maybe listening to music would help.

Getting up from bed, Tanya padded over to where her laptop was sitting on her desk. She opened her music app and put on a soulful Bollywood music playlist. Then she sat down to declutter her desktop.

It took her only two minutes to put everything in its proper folder. The only item left was the document on Apollonia's boutique inspection.

Tanya sighed. That establishment was really gorgeous. Also, the fact that everything was easy for Apollonia. I mean, to get fresh fruits from your own farm, not to sell, but just to impress the patrons.

Those were some succulent kiwis. Well, but there are good kiwis being grown in Italy, given it was the one of the largest producers of the fruit in the world. It was a little factoid she had picked up soon after coming to Milan. In some advertisement or somewhere she didn't remember.

There was something about the food that she was served in that boutique though. Try as she may Tanya couldn't put her finger on it really. Something that had struck her, but was so minute, she had brushed it aside in favour of taking in the sumptuousness of the shop.

Briefly, she wondered about her train of thought, but dismissed it just as quickly. Ramblings of the midnight, she named it. The mind wandered at night, about topics she wouldn't normally care about.

Anyway...

Tanya tried to remember what it was. She went through the conversation they had with the manager lady. Tanya had been admiring the belt she could not afford and the manager had informed her that it'd go on sale the next month. Then Alonzo had asked something about the inventory and...

She remembered. The kiwis! The kiwis were from the company's own farm. From Lazio. What was the name of the farm? It resembled a Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta movie.

She opened up her phone browser and started searching for movies in which both the actors had starred. A lot of movies popped up, including the ones they had guest starred in. She kept scrolling.

Veer-zara. Vera farms.

That was a name Tanya vividly remembered. She had read up on that farm, because something interesting had happened there. Quickly, she pulled up the documents on Wazisi Capitals from cloud storage. And there it was.

Vera Farms was mentioned in the list of Wazisi Capitals' clients. In the margin, Tanya had put an URL in the comment.

She clicked on the URL and an article popped up. It was a small report on drug abuse by the labourers of the farm.

But Tanya ignored it, instead she pulled up the details of Vera farms. The management structure and details of every client was mentioned in the file, but nobody usually bothered reading them as they were like fine prints. The usual disclaimers that are expected to be mundane and not expected to be anything important. Tanya hadn't bothered with them either.

But today, in the dead of the night, she went through each and every one of those names. Right at the top was Venessa Visconti, the only member of Visconti whose name appeared in the management group. A quick search in Google told her Venessa was Apollonia's aunt from father's side. No surprises there, the manager had mentioned that Vera farms belonged to the family.

She scanned down the list. There were a fair mix of ethnic names including Asian and Middle Eastern ones.

Then she combed the list of executives of Wazisi Capital. Another eclectic mix of names from mostly Italian and Asian names. Since the Bank had extended the credit line to Wazisi Capital, a huge amount of literature was accumulated at the onset of the inspection. Too many documents, too many names, too many big words about the different operations the company carried out.

Hours passed and Tanya kept looking through. She was in a frenzy. The anxiety of discovery and too much adrenalin kept her awake. Her eyes blurred over, but she kept on reading.

The sound of a bell rang from a nearby church. Tanya frowned, looking at the clock. It was only five in the morning, maybe they had an early Sunday mass planned. Turning towards the jumbled documents of both Wazisi and Vera, she focused her attention back towards the task at hand.

When the bells tolled again after an hour, she found something. A tiny thing, maybe it was something, maybe it was nothing.

If it was something...

Under the Supply Chain management department at Vera farms was a name. Gurminder Chadda.

The same name which appeared under Corporate Liaisons department of Wazisi Farms.
