Chapter 25: Name
"Hey,.. Basil..." I croon, rolling over to face him. His eyes remain closed but he squeezes me ever so gently. As much as he can, of course, with my swollen belly in the way.
"Yes, Edelweiss?"
"Today I was thinking about the baby and remembered that we don't even have a list of names."
One brown eye slides open, "And you want to go over them now?"
"Yes. I can't sleep," I whine, "I can't get comfortable and my mind is all over the place!" I glance at the clock. It's midnight. I've been in bed since nine trying to catch a few z's. Basil hums and opens his other eye.
"Alright, Edelweiss. Don't distress yourself. Hold on," He sits up against the headboard and coaxes me into his lap, where I lay back against his chest and he pulls the covers up around us. Basil twines his arms around me and delicately rests his chin on my shoulder, "Is this okay, mein Schatz?" I exhale in relief.
"Ja. Dankeschön, Edelweiss." He's comfortably warm. I bask in his body heat as he rattles off a few names he absolutely won't consider.
"It cannot be Milan, Bertram or Oskar. Those are overused family names." I chuckle.
"Alright. Are there any you like?"
"Well... I like Lanzo a lot. It's Grandfather's middle name, actually. I also like Meinrad, Wolfgang, Georg and Cäcil," He lists, "What about you?"
"Hmm... I like Wieland."
"My middle name? Why?"
"It has a singular ring to it," I hum, "There's also Andreas, Björn and David."
"Not my middle name. I've never liked it." He pleads. I sigh.
"Alright, not for him. I'm not giving up on it though."
"Fair enough... Zipporah?"
"Ja?" He sighs.
"I want you to name him."
"Me? He's our son, not just mine!" I protest only to have him hush me.
"Ja, but I want you to."
"Are you... sure?"
"Yes." I relax a little more and ponder the names.
"Lanzo Andreas Kaiser... how does that sound?"
"It is beautiful, Edelweiss." He compliments and affectionately nips at my ear lobe, then kisses my neck and jaw.
"I'm glad you think so," I twist around and catch his lips in a full kiss. If I surprised him, he's not letting onto it. Basil returns the kiss, thickening it as he leans in. We split apart after a few minutes and I giggle, "Now I think I'm ready to sleep." He smiles and we get repositioned, so that he's wrapped around me from behind but we're on our sides. He keeps his arms close around my stomach.
"Gut Nacht, Edelweiss."
"Gut Nacht, Edelweiss," After a few minutes he's out. I smile and gaze down at my growing abdomen, stroking it thoughtfully, "Lanzo Andreas... Lanzo." In response, the baby kicks.
"I love you both." I whisper, placing my hands over Basil's and snuggling closer before sleep finally takes over.
