Detective Edward Gold x Reader - Homely Bar

A/N: I wrote this while listening to the music "Homely Yado Inn" from Mother 3. It's so good! I love the soundtrack. Please enjoy!

Detective Gold exhaled slowly as he sat the mug of beer down on the counter.

It had been a routine spring day rounding up criminals and making sure the villagers of Spitbucket were satisfied. It was hard work, but the smiles on their faces always made him feel a little better.

The sheriff had left already, an odd instance, so he was left sitting alone at the bar, trying to finish his drink.

The barkeep, whose name he'd learned was Todd, sent him a sympathetic look. "Must've been a long day for Sheriff to leave."

"He did mention that he was exhausted," Gold mused, sparing the blond a glance. "I guess he must have not wanted to get drunk tonight."

"Maybe so."

The sound of thundering rain outside only dampened the brunet's good mood; most likely, it would continue well after the saloon closed, thus forcing him to venture home in the rain.

For now he sighed, taking another good swig of the alcohol.

His ears perked up at the sound of the swinging doors squeaking, and when he looked behind he straightened up. At the door was a drenched young woman whose tattered dress managed to cling to her even as she wrung the water out in the entry and limped to the counter.

When she sat down on a stool, she sighed heavily. "Barkeep, give me the strongest alcohol you have."

"Sure thing, miss." He tipped his hat and turned, trying to locate it.

"Hey." Her voice made Edward snap out of it, and when he blinked he noticed her sour gaze. "I know I'm a sight, but would it kill ya not to stare?"

"O-Oh, my sincerest apologies, ma'am." He took off his hat and bowed slightly to her. "The name's-"

"Detective Gold, I remember you." She interrupted. When Todd slid a glass of clear liquid to her, she thanked him with a grateful smile and took a good, long gulp. "You helped me with those bandits last week."

"Er, I suppose I did...?" He trailed off, slightly insulted that he'd been cut off, but interested in her memory. "Were you the one who had trouble with your stove getting stolen?"

"That's me." She turned her entire body to face him and smirked. "I don't know if you remember me, but the name's (y/n), all the same."

"It's pleasant to meet you again, miss (y/n)." When he shook her hand, he nearly flinched back at how cold she was. "Good heavens, are you okay? You look chilled to the bone!"

"Eh, I'm fine." She shrugged, grabbing the glass from the countertop. "I've been in worse weather."

"So what brings you here, (l/n)?" Todd finally chimed in, taking the glass once she was done and beginning to wash it. "I thought you came in on Mondays."

Her light mood immediately disappeared and she glared gloomily at the counter.

"I, ah, I'm orphaned, I suppose." She grumped. "Stupid bandits ambushed my father just this morning on the way to Wares Town."

Silence reigned between the three for a few tense seconds, and finally Todd lowered his gaze.

"My dearest condolences, (y/n)." He murmured with a sigh. "Your father will be missed."

"It's fine." She gave a shuddery breath and slapped some money on the counter. "I just need to forget about it for a while. Gimme another."

He seemed to hesitate, but took the money and poured her another brimming glass.

"What will you do now?" Edward asked her when she took another swig. "Do you need a place to stay?"

She seemed to contemplate the answer for a few moments before chuckling. "Nah, I guess I'll just live off of what little money I have left for a while, maybe take one of Todd's guest rooms and figure out what I'm gonna do next."

"I certainly don't mind." He put another glass away before working on another. "Stay as long as you need."

She seemed a little happier after a couple of glasses, and the detective knew he wouldn't stay much longer. Sliding his empty beer glass over to Todd, he turned to her. "So, um, (y/n)."

"Yeah? What is it?" She rose an eyebrow at him, her lips poised to drink from the glass.

He fidgeted with his bandanna for a second before gently taking her cold, clammy hand. "I want to help you in some way. Would you mind it if I... um..."

She continued to give him a weirded-out look as he began to nervously sweat.

Finally, he sprang forward and, when she set the glass down, locked lips with her, clenching his eyes shut. As fast as he'd done it, he pulled away, slapping money down on the counter and fleeing the bar.

It only took her a few moments of stunned silence to register what just happened. With a chuckle, she turned back to her drink with a pink flush on her cheeks.

A/N: Finally, Edward gets a oneshot. To be honest, I really love this adorable dork. Please tell me what you thought, feel free to request, and I'll see you later!
