The Old Friend

*Frisk's POV*

There was the hotel.

The hotel I named the hotel of sweet dreams and nightmares.

That, of course, comes later.

At the time, G and I stared up at it with wide eyes full of interest and excitement, each of us full of expectation for what could be inside.

Well, that's why I was excited.

Yet G looked at the sign on the door that read: MONSTERS ONLY.

My excitement dropped into a slump and I glowered as G chuckled.

"Well dollface," He smirked, "Looks like we have to find you a costume."

"A costume? Come on G, it's not Halloween. No one is going to believe a costume. Besides, you got money for this place?"

G rolled his eyes, which filled me with annoyance and I glared away so I didn't have to look at his smirk.

"I don't need money, sweetheart," From his tone of voice, I knew what he was planing.

The next thing I knew, we were inside the hotel at the check in desk and G was laughing with someone who seemed to be a very old friend.

As a fact, the person said himself, "It's very good to see you old friend."

His voice matched his appearance: Flickering and mysterious like the flames that engulfed him.

The monsters voice sounded as if it was stroking an animal, as if it was just a tender flame for warmth, that was too afraid to get close to anyone, too afraid to burn them.

"Nice to see ya Grillby," G said with a smirk.

Yet his smirk seemed friendly, more of a honest smile.

Not like the smirk he uses when he teases and annoys me.

Something in me wanted him to smile at me like that, wanted him to be just as kind.

Was that feeling the same feeling that wanted me to be friends with G?

The thought caused me to jump back at myself in shock.

'Friends?! With G?! As if!' I told myself in my head, forcing myself to believe I didn't want that.

When it worked, I looked away from G and his friend making sure the feeling didn't come back.

Though I listened to their conversation, and I could hear the monster named Grillby say, "I thought you were in prison... don't tell me you escaped again..."

"Eh. Come on Grillby, you knew it would happen eventually."

"I did..." Grillby slurred in a gentleman voice, causing me to be lured in.

Just like the beauty of a flame.

I looked at him while he wrote in the registration book, writing the clearest and most elegant 'G' I had ever seen.

How could a wonderful monster like this had been friends with G?

That wasn't the only thing that baffled me, I also wondered how he got around and touched things without them catching fire.

The urge of curiosity ached me again, and my mind flicked back to the letter.

So did my eyes, and the regret held me back from asking Grillby.

"Though it appears you have another with you..." Grillby continued, his white blank eyes turning to me.

As I stared at them, I felt the heat of his flames seemed to be stronger, and I could see the intense and logical emotion that burned inside him.

Unlike G, Grillby didn't glare, and he just smiled with very thin lips as he looked at me.

When I turned back to G, I realized his eyes were narrowed at Grillby, and his friendly mood had sizzled in the flames.

Curious.

I thought to myself that it would be the thing that killed me.

I thought to myself that it would haunt me for my whole life, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

"Yes. Her name is Frisk," G explained, his tone a bit more fierce then before.

It was strange to me, hear G say my name.

When I thought about it, I realized I had never heard G call me by my name.

Then I realized he wasn't calling me by my name, he was just telling someone else what it was.

And I'm sure he wasn't about to tell Grillby my name was, 'dollface'.

"Pleasure to meet you Frisk..." Grillby smiled and I gave him a smile back, still curious about him.

G quickly said, "So Grillby, thought you owned that bar."

My eyes widened with shock at the news, and I looked back at the flame that seemed nice enough.

Had he really owned a bar?

At least I knew it couldn't have been a stripper bar, he doesn't seem like someone who would enjoy it there.

Well, he doesn't look like he would enjoy a bar too.

There were mysteries to him, yet for some reason, they didn't edge me on as much as G's had.

Nodding, Grillby answered honestly, "Yes, I did. But monsters went to mix bars with humans and monsters instead, the one I had in the underground was more of a... place to get rid of the pain...."

I could see he meant the pain everyone felt, trapped down the hole in the mountain.

The thought made me feel a bit sad, and I could feel it fill me like a pitcher of water while my eyebrows furrowed with worry.

"Yup. I remember that," G said with a smirk, his eyes staring off into one of the lights in the hotel as if he was remembering good times.

Eleven years back, G was ten.

Did he go to a bar at that age?

Of course, that wouldn't surprise me much, and that worried me a bit.

Yet I wondered how old that would make Grillby if he owned the bar.

"So, I got a hotel instead," Grillby concluded, looking around the lobby with eyes that seemed blank, empty, no feeling.

"A monster hotel," G pointed out, nodding to another sign over the door, "No humans allowed."

Even though G had a tricky voice here, the one he used to get people to do what he wanted, the sign still caused me to feel naked in the store.

Made me feel out in the open, with everyone staring at me, even though no one did.

Though it didn't help that G was pointing it out.

Grillby's head turned to me for a glance, then back at G.

"... No, G," He said plainly, crossing off the name in the registration.

Worry gutted me, and I knew Grillby probably wouldn't even let us stay.

My mind began to search for ideas on where else we could go, yet everything seemed so impossible, so I looked out the window, searching for a place we could run if Grillby called the security.

That seemed like something that would always happen with G, so I knew it would be best to prepare for it.

"Aw come on Grillby," G complained spinning in a small circle as if he was going to leave but something was pulling him back.

He had his friendly smirk, and I caught myself staring at it instead of the fire man that shook his head.

"No, no, no. Last time the costs were too much," Grillby said, his eyes narrowed away from G, his hands busy writing things down.

Last time?

The thoughts lead me into believing that each time G escapes, he probably would stop at the hotel most of the time.

Didn't he know about Grillby's bar?

Or did he just get curious?

With the silly thought my curiosity was rubbing off on him, I giggled softly to myself.

Both eyes glanced at me for only a second before back at each other.

"I can pay for them this time!"

Grillby rolled his eyes, and I did to, then stopped realizing G was glaring at me with a warning that said, "I'm getting us in goodie-goodie."

It was scary to me that I knew exactly which nickname he was using, so I turned away, not wanting to look at them anymore.

"G, I wouldn't try that lie on me. I know you too well..." Grillby shook his head and looked back at organizing his desk.

"Come on Grillby! We really need this, we'll leave in the morning, promise!"

"You and your girlfriend?"

My face burned into a dark red and my head whipped around to face G and Grillby, anger filling my blood with a fiery strength.

Then I realized G also had yellow tinted on his cheeks, which made me even more furious.

Luckily, he wasn't considering it.

All he was considering was punching Grillby or not.

Though it was strange for me to see another side of Grillby so quickly, no longer the tending flame, the twisted tricky one, the hallucination in a snowstorm.

Yet it was a tender hallucination, and I still knew it was just a tease on G.

Which made me feel quite satisfied in all truth.

"I would never with this slut!" G shouted, pointing his thumb at me with a force that made me think it would fall off.

His words stung me a bit, and I looked away, my face still red as I winced slightly.

Feeling both eyes on me, I almost turned and smacked G for causing so much attention on me.

After a moment, I felt the eyes leave me and they continued.

"She is a human, I can't let you stay," Grillby said flatly.

"... Grillby... you want me to be honest with you...?" G said, which caused my curiosity to move my head to face him.

Would he really tell Grillby?

Grillby just nodded and stared at G, his hands holding a pen that seemed to be running out of ink.

"Truth is..." G started, placing his hands on the desk and leaning close as if he was truly kind, "... I missed ya buddy."

Grillby growled and shoved G's laughing head away.

"What? It's true!"

"All you want is to con me G," Grillby growled, his flames flickering a bit faster.

If I was honest, I had to hold in a laugh.

It itched my throat, yet I held it in tightly, just enjoying the sight of too old friends chatting, wishing that I had a chance to do that.

Though I never did, and the thought is what kept my laughter down.

"Alright alright, but it's for a good reason. You have to let us stay," G pleaded, with his hands clamped together as if he was begging.

All I could think about was how wonderful it was to see G in pleading distress, and I smiled at Grillby as if thanking him.

Though I truly wished I could do the same thing.

"Tell me the reason," Grillby said folding his arms.

And if he had any, I knew he would raise an eyebrow.

"It's got something to do with that damn Prince."

Grillby's eyes widened and all he did was nod, G's face suddenly serious, and the friendly humor switched to a dark silent anger that filled a soul with emptiness.

At least, that's what I felt.

As fast as he had crossed off G's name, Grillby wrote it again, then he wrote mine right next to it.

"But I'm not letting her walk around human," Grillby muttered, rummaging through a drawer.

G watched with his arms folded, and his weight shifted onto one foot while he waited.

Waiting myself, I realized how tense I was, my hands clutching the front of the shawl with white knuckles and my legs so straight they made me feel dizzy.

Trying to relax like G, I shifted my weight onto one foot, and probably looked quite awkward.

Grillby stopped rummaging and pulled out old dusty glasses that seemed so thin and fragile, they would snap in the most gentle grip.

They didn't shin in Grillby's fire light from all the dust, but G took them carefully and smirked wide, his eyes studying the object as if it was diamond.

"Ah... Perfect," He said as he shoved them on my face.

"What the-?!" I yelled, the shock forcing its way into me just like the glasses.

I calmed down and looked around, realizing a strange fact.

"Everything looks the same," I said turning to Grillby and G, wondering how this would solve our problem of me being human.

"Yes," G said, his smirk growing, "But you don't."

He looked me up and down, and took a mirror that Grillby was holding out to him.

He showed me, and I almost screamed.

Two ears on the top of my head twitched, and fangs tilted from my mouth.

The glasses were no where to be seen, and I poked on of the fangs, realizing it was just my regular tooth.

"What-"

Before I could finish, G interrupted, "Image Glitching Glasses. Where in the world did ya get these Grillby?"

With a sinister smile, Grillby answered, "From the great Dr. Alphys herself. They give anyone the appearance of the opposite creature. Monsters would look human, and human look monster."

"Why do you have these?" I asked, unable to contain the curiosity that slipped out.

I cursed at myself.

Grillby blushed, the fire around his cheeks getting a bit darker as he said, "Well... sometimes I wonder what I would look like human. Most monsters do..."

Before I could look at G, he said, "Pfft. Not me. I look sexy just the way I am."

He looked at me and smirked.

I just turned away, hiding the red that burned my cheeks.

'Stop it. Stop it. Stop,' I forced my mind to think, 'Why on Earth would you ever think that?'

"Well... thank you Grillby," I said with a smile, grabbing out a few dollars from my back pocket.

Grillby shook his head and his hand waved away the money as if he couldn't accept it.

"No no, you don't need to pay me..." He explained with a thin smile, "Just pay for any of the damage G does."

Thinking that was a lot, I looked at G with a worried warning that said, "I don't have enough, so don't even try."

G just chuckled low, and grabbed the hotel key to our room.
