#25 - A Sign

Third Person POV

In the darkness of night, God comes down from his place in Heaven, and stops outside of a house. The house is thick with depression, the blinds are closed almost all the time, the paint is starting to fade, the garden long since having died.

He walks to the garden, gently brushing his fingertips against each plant, causing them to burst with life, bright green leaves and beautiful flowers. He stops, in front of the kitchen window, where there is no blind. He looks across at the empty garden area, before walking there. He touches his fingertips to his lips, kisses them and then touches the ground, causing the ground to become fresh, rich soil.

A plant begins to grow, just a tiny sapling at first, but it grows and grows and grows, until peachy coloured roses appear.

The flowers move and twist, becoming a word, the letters spelled out simply..

K A S P E R

God smiles at his work, whispers a soft sweet spell to keep the sweet rare Juliet Rose bush alive, forever and ever.

Morning comes, bright and early, like always. Hannah makes her way into the kitchen, slowly, lazily. She begins to make a pot of coffee and puts bread in the toaster.

She walks to the sink to wash her coffee cup, and for some reason, like some sort of instinct possess her, she looks out the window, staring at the flowers.

A shriek erupts from her mouth and the cup shatters to the ground. Her husband, Chester runs into the kitchen with their son, Rune and his best friend, Phoenix, worried something must have happened.

"Mum? What is it?" Rune questions, and all Hannah can do is point shakily at the Rose bush that's covered in flowers, yet it's unnatural. The flowers are lined perfectly, so that they spell the word;

K A S P E R

Phoenix just smiles, "God was here."

Rune, Chester and Hannah all turn to look at him and he just smiles innocently.

"You can't tell me someone normal made your completely dead garden brim with life in one night, can you?" Phoenix questions.

Rune nods, "he's right. It must have been God. Maybe it's a sign, perhaps... perhaps Kasper got into Heaven. He'd be at peace now.." he whispers the last part.

Phoenix smiles sadly before leaning in and whispering to Rune.

"He did."

A soft sob leaves Rune's lips and Phoenix is instantly there, cradling him and taking him back to his room.

"That Phoenix boy has changed. He never talked about God before." Chester grumbles.

Hannah nods, "maybe he is right though.. maybe our.. maybe our baby boy is at peace.."

Chester purses his lips before looking directly at her, opening his mouth to disagree, only to see the hope shining in her eyes.

"Yes..." he says slowly, "maybe he is.."

That afternoon, God and Kasper watch from Heaven as the whole family, including Phoenix, tend to the garden, watering it, weeding, adding fertiliser etc. but they all take extra special care of the Juliet Rose that still spells Kasper's name, like a reminder he was there, that he was beautiful and a rare soul, and that he's found the place he belongs in.

Kasper turns to God, smiling genuinely, his shoulders hunched in a carefree manner.

"Thank you, so much for doing that. My parents never would have left the house, and neither really would have Rune." Kasper says.

God smiles, "you're one of my children now, Kasper. You don't need to thank me, it's my job to make you as happy and comfortable in your new section of life until your family is ready to come to you. If assuring them that you're in a much better place is what it takes? I'll do it. Besides, Phoenix is one of my sons and Rune is his best friend, and the person he loves most, if making my son happy is done by making his love interest happy, and making his love interest happy is assuring him that his brother is doing well, then that's what I'll do. Tell me where to sign up."

Kasper smiles, causing God to grin and ruffle his hair.

"Off you go, sweet rose. The angels made fruit salad, go get as much as you wish." God gently nudges him, smiling softly.

Kasper nods and hurries off to get fruit as God walks to the Gates of Heaven, trailing his fingers along the bars slightly.

"Sad isn't it?" A voice says behind him.

God pauses, recognising the voice and debating turning around and blasting the person, or turning around and taking civilly. He decides on the latter.

"Knox." He greets warily. Knox smiles.

"Hello God, were you sad to see your children go?" Knox asks, his voice deep and smooth, a rumbling sound like thunder from a distance.

"Of course I was. I was sad to see you go as well, you know." God says. Knox rolls his eyes.

"Of course you were." He practically spits.

"Knox..." God warns.

"Knox..." Knox mocks, "don't fucking patronise me. I am not the useless, misguided child I used to be. You have no power over me, yet you still think you can manipulate me." Nox sneers, a flicker of flames dancing around his body, like a bubble.

"I am not trying to manipulate you, Knox. You're letting the prophecy change your morals, you think everyone is an enemy. We're not. We just want to help you, or be left to our own lives. Yet you keep coming back, claiming this and that like its going to change things. Nothing can change the past, Knox. Not a single thing. Once someone is wiped from their place of rest, that's it. Earth is your first chance, when you die there, you go to Heaven or Hell. If you die there, that's it. Those were your second chances." God explains, his patience admirable.

Knox glares at him, "yeah? Well second chances didn't help Aspen! Did it?! He's fucking dead and it's you and your stupid fucking archangels fault!" He shouts, tears welling up in his eyes.

"It is not our fault, Knox. No one could have known that would happen to him.." God says softly, remorse clear in his tone of voice.

Knox just yells, pain and anger evident in his voice before his body begins to distort before vanishing with a loud 'pop', leaving behind a black mist that smells heavily of campfire smoke.

God sighs deeply, "I suppose the saying; do something right, do something wrong, is correct. There will only ever be a balance, something goes wrong? Something else has to go right."
