~CHAPTER ONE~
Apollo cursed as Kit slammed his foot on the break. A flash of a body hitting the bumper flew past them. When their truck screeched to a halt, they looked at each other warily.
"Do you think it's a crawler?"
"Better go have a look." Apollo breathed as he leaned into the back seat and grabbed his bow and two arrows. Kit opened the glove compartment under the steering wheel and pocketed two knives. They opened their car doors in sync, their knees bent and eyes fixed on the curdled up figure ahead of them on the road.
They weren't going fast when the thing ran out of the trees and into the road. The whole thing reminded Kit of when he had hit a deer a while back before the whole world had changed. A dead deer was nothing compared to the things he'd seen in the last few years.
In front of them, the figure twitched, its legs curving into its body in a protective action. Kit looked over at Apollo who only pulled the drawstring of his bow closer to his face, the two sharp arrows resting eagerly between his fingers.
A rush of adrenaline sparked the figure into consciousness as it rolled over in pain on the cracked road. It gave out an erratic gurgling sound that caused Kit to swallow hard.
It was just a girl. She had to be seventeen at the most, her short hair clinging to the blood adorning her face. Struggling, her eyes opened and she looked up at the two men.
Both Apollo and Kit let out the air they had been holding in as they saw her eyes. Not a crawler, a survivor. She had somehow survived.
Apollo lowered his bow and slung it around his shoulder. He put the arrows back into the quiver on his back and made a slow advance toward the injured girl. Kit wasn't sure whether or not he should sheath his knives, but as he watched Apollo roll the girl over her could see she wouldn't be a threat to them.
The thickness of her blood coated Apollo's hands and arms as he rolled the girl onto her back. She was breathing inconsistently, her chest rising and falling frantically as she tried her hardest to stay awake.
"Open the truck door for me." Apollo glanced at Kit who pushed his knives into the holsters adorning his thighs and paced back to the car. In the distance, three distinct howls rippled in their direction.
"Quickly." Kit breathed calmly as Apollo tucked his arms under the girl's body and lifted her up. She was a dead weight, sagging as Apollo lay her down in the back seat and strapped a seat belt around her torso. She twitched again from the pain of her wounds, her eyelids fluttering as the second wave of pain came.
Apollo jumped into the passenger seat and slammed his door as the three howls became four. Kit turned the key round and pulled back the gear stick with vigour, the engine's roar louder than the ones coming for them outside.
They sped down the deserted road, the pool of blood on the road getting smaller and smaller from the side view mirror. Apollo watched long enough to see a flash of fur as four enormous beasts ran out into the road and sniffed at the puddle. He was glad that they were in such a fast car.
