~CHAPTER FIVE~

Fletch spit out a piece of salami as Dante struggled to join two words together coherently.

"How are you alive?" Kit murmured, looking her up and down over and over.

None of the men could explain her being alive, if that's what she was. They had all watched as Phoenix stabbed her in the heart. The only way to permanently kill a Crawler was to destroy the heart, so it made absolutely no sense to any of them.

Apollo made a tentative move towards her, putting a hand out in her direction.

"How are you feeling?" His soft words reached her as he advanced one step closer. The girl retreated so she was closer to the open door. A warm breeze ruffled up her short blue hair.

"Phoenix," Apollo turned towards his friend, asking without words what they should do next. Phoenix stepped forward so he was next to Apollo.

"My name is Phoenix. What's yours?"

The girl wanted to answer his question, but she couldn't remember anything before running through the woods. Not even her own name.

"I... I don't know." She shook her head, the answer lost to the far reaches of her brain, the aching feeling that she would never hear it again gnawing at her.

"That's okay. That's fine. This is Apollo, he brought you here. Do you remember that?"

The girl nodded, looking over at Apollo. He was tall, like Phoenix, with dirty blonde, shoulder length hair. He looked at her strangely, like he couldn't figure her out. She could tell he didn't like not knowing. She was going to tell him welcome to the club when Phoenix spoke up again.

"You were bit." There was an obvious edge of stunned dismay in his tone, and in the way his gaze seemed to bore into her shoulder.

She reflected on that for a second, working up the courage to talk about it. Because talking about it made it real.

"Ye... yes. A crawler attacked me. In the forest. There were more." She shook her head chaotically.

Apollo spoke up, "I saw them, there were four after her."

"Five." The girl bluntly interrupted and Apollo shifted his almost black eyes towards her. He gave her a soft smile.

"What do we do now then?" Kit chimed in, putting his sandwich on the counter and walking with conviction towards Apollo and Phoenix. Dante copied him but Fletch just stayed where he was, propping his feet up on the chair next to him idly.

"I'd like to examine you, to make sure you're alright." She looked at Dante, his green eyes disclosing a hint of fear. Or maybe it was his scent, she could smell the fear radiating off of him. She'd never been able to smell people like that. At least, not that she could remember.

"Okay." They were all staring.

"First," Phoenix said tenderly while he pointed at the thin sheet she clung at, "we need to find you some clothes."
