Chapter 8

"ENTRY NUMBER 10; Experiments on the vessel are a failure, it doesn't seem to be any different than the control cases..." The recording paused, she didn't sound like herself at all but they barely knew this side of her but the voice continued to echo through the speakers.

"Whatever, they're a hassle to work with anyway." Her voice spat through the small speakers at the bottom of the screen that's copies littered the walls of the old lab, what she said had made everyone gasp, she had never ever been one to say something like that, it continued though.

"The seeds just stick to you, and won't let go." The recording ended with a annoyed click, everyone looked amongst each other for a moment, that didn't sound like the Alphys that they knew at all, no happiness in her tone, just annoyance and numbness. They soon got over the shock, walking by the mirrors that seeped dreariness and sorrow, their exact situation would be terribly hard to explain as Frisk looked in the mirror for a bit. They seemed captivated by their own reflection, it would have been quite cute if not for the terribly dangerous surroundings with shadows behind every corner.

"Frisk, come on sweetie, we need to keep going." Toriel said but there was the same kind of white muck seeping from a small crack in the mirror, it had that same innocent and simple smile before turning into an even more horrifying white creature with fangs and oddly long limbs that melted a little.

"GahBlaRnAh..." The creature said as this one seemed not to be able to create frailer sentences, a few butterflies were formed but didn't seem to attack the child or any of the monsters, Undyne was ready to kill it though as she clenched her fists. One around the spear, even through it was her magic it could break just like any normal stick, thankfully that didn't happen and they just watched as the pale blue spear suffered.

"Hmm, hm hm..." Frisk hummed the tune to a beautiful melody, the monster seemed to perk up at this and remember something from their distant past, another round of butterflies this time actually attacked but the large group easily dodged them as they were really quite slow.

"Someone finally gets it." One voice said as the form morphed a little strangely.

"Courage..." Another said, the last one just let out a frog like croaking noise, the butterflies came at them faster now but they managed to avoid them narrowly, the bird seemed placated for the moment and seemed to turn back into it's mostly liquid state where it puddled, everyone got away while they could and entered another small room where there was another slot.

"Wow." Undyne said, grabbing another note that had been dropped onto the floor, written in bright red ink. She read it as Frisk pulled the key off their chain and inserted it into the slot but it didn't fit right, the child didn't seem to care that much as they marched back out and down the hall back to the room they were at previously before they could read anything more Alphys came rushing down with a large bag over he shoulder, splotches of white over her scales and the black duffle bag.

"F-Frisk, I h-hope I'm wrong b-but he... h-he did it, g-god damn it h-he did it." She said, Frisk's eyes looked the size of saucers as she gestured for them to follow as Alphys quickly led them back through the long halls, signs lighting up as they went past and illuminating their worried faces through the myst that seemed to thicken with each step they took.

"Where are we going?" Undyne asked, long legs making her Toriel and Papyrus going at more of a fast walk than the slow jog that everyone else had been doing. She didn't get an answer until they arrived at the familiar room with the operating tables, Alphys gestured for Papyrus to set his brother down on the farther one to the door they had entered through, Alphys sat the large black bag over onto the table and grabbed a few things out of it.

"WHAT HAPPENED?" Papyrus bellowed, he wanted answers so badly. The taller of the two skeletons stood by his side as he watched some kind of yellow light flicker in his open but completely black eye sockets, then a blue flicker.

"H-He... Determination..." Alphys couldn't give a straight answer to his question as she fished around in the bag, Frisk just starred at the small skeleton with a sad and unsettled look in their eyes, one of pain and anguish but also one of extreme terror and fear for the skeleton's well being. Undyne managed to calm the small lizard a bit, she spoke but her answer was terrifying.

"H-He's been taking Determination, o-only a small amount b-but it's there. He's b-been using very small doses, b-barely enough to count but it's there, h-he's been suffering from w-withdrawal and the fatigue f-from fighting Flowey and from c-creating a fold in the universe must have triggered shock." Alphys said, Undyne looked absolutely petrified but silently asked her to clarify, just in case.

"In s-short, he's in a kind of s-self sustained coma and h-has been using the D-Determination as a kind of a-antidepressant." She stuttered out, everyone being absolutely shocked and petrified would be an understatement as they starred at the small skeleton laying on the table. He had always been so happy and protective of his brother, Papyrus had had no idea his brother could be going through something like this. Aside from the occasional nightmare he was so happy and cool, he would even brush off the times where Papyrus had been woken by the muffled sounds of him thrashing around and screaming, sobbing loudly into his pillow. Papyrus would always offer to talk but he would turn it down and make some adorably stupid pun to cover the tear tracks that coated and stained lines over his frail cheekbones, how had Papyrus not noticed...

"Oh my god..." Papyrus almost whispered, most monsters and humans had no idea he could actually get that quiet and serious for more than a second, how could he have been so blind and not noticed the obvious signs. He felt like the biggest idiot in the world, every time that Sans would wander off to his room to take a nap, every time he had woken his brother by muffled screams echoing through their small house, every single time that his brother would lock himself away in his room and make a terrible excuse or even when he would go back to their old house in snowdin and stay there for weeks. Or even the little things that were more subtile like how he would go out for random walks at midnight for a bit where he never said where he would go... How could Papyrus be so blind?
