Chapter 6
The slightly green tinted myst pooled at the monsters feet as they walked along the deep green tiles that felt a little damp and very cold to the touch, they walked through the small room and into a long hallway that had almost no lighting, dark things that looked to be the size of a normal painting or frame of one lined the walls. Alphys straightened her coat slightly and walked up to one, it had a motion sensor attached to the top and the sign lit up a lime green that only made the place more spooky.
"Alphys... Why are we here?" Toriel asked softly, she didn't respond for a while as they slowly meandered through the small and dark room, a door slid open moments later and it led to a very dark hallway. Threads of myst seeping into the small room as their eyes had finally adjusted to the darkness, they walked through the small door only moments later.
"R-Read those, they're the entries I made w-when I worked down here, it is easier f-for you just to read t-them." Alphys said, the glowing panel getting brighter as it sensed the motion of the monsters who had entered, Alphys pressed a small button on the side and her voice rung out from its speakers and startled most of the occupants of the small hallway that just got creeper and creeper as more time passed down here. Undyne handed the almost lifeless looking skeleton over to Papyrus who held him in his grasp carefully, watching his brother's chest rise and fall.
"ENTRY NUMBER 1; This is it... Time to do what the king asked me to do." The audio recording paused, words appearing in lime green then being spoken as if it was a script. The audio recording didn't sound very happy with her assignment,
"I will create the power to free us all, I will unleash the power of the SOUL." The recording paused again, Alphys looked uneasy as it read off in her own voice but didn't stutter as much as she normally did, oh how that would change.
"Babe, what is this place?" Undyne asked as she looked into her girlfriend's eyes, Alphys looked as if she was going to respond but then she just marched over to the next entry station where it started to read off again.
"ENTRY NUMBER 2; The barrier is guarded by soul power, unfortunately, this power cannot be recreated artificially. SOUL power can only be derived from what was once living. So, to create more, we will have to use what we already have, the souls of monsters." The entry finished with a small but very burdened sigh as it finished it's lecture, Alphys looked very uneasy.
"ALPHYS, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?" Papyrus asked, his booming voice echoed off of the old and dead walls, everyone hoped they were wrong but her answer would either confirm what they didn't want or give them an even more unsettling answer.
"I-It means... I had t-to use monsters that had f-fallen down." Alphys confirmed, she was met with a gasp from Papyrus who soon covered his mouth in shock, Toriel just had a look of pain and death in her normally loving eyes.
"I'm sorry Alphys." Toriel muttered sadly, eyes shifting downwards to look at the dark and slightly misty floor. She had been queen and apparently she blamed herself, Alphys realized this quickly and immediately stuttered out a response.
"No! I-It's not your f-fault, A-Asgore was just trying to free us all, I was the o-one who agreed t-to it." Alphys said, she always had been quick to cast the blame on herself.
"A-Anyways, just r-read them as we go along, I-I think I h-have a way to h-help Sans." Alphys said as she started to slowly walk over to the next panel, she didn't bother with an explanation as she knew what she was about to do was stupid.
"Hey Alphy?" Undyne asked, pausing infront of the log written in lime green text.
"I have one more question." Undyne said with a look of some emotion in her eyes that she couldn't place, Alphys nodded and silently told her to go on. When the fish woman didn't get the silent hints and nudges her girlfriend had sent, Alphys actually told her it using words and the english language.
"What is it?" Alphys asked her girlfriend, now looking up at her with a strange level of confidence that Undyne had to shake herself out of adoring because this was most definitely not the time to go ga ga over your girlfriend, save that for later.
"Why did Sans bleed like Frisk does?" She asked, Alphys' eyes went wide along with Frisk's as if they knew something that no one else did, Alphys sprinted faster than anyone had previously thought was possible for the small lizard woman.
"STAY THERE!" She had exclaimed through the deep and murky darkness as she ran down the long hallway and deeper into the large horrific lab where she had brought them, leaving only Frisk to guide them as everyone presumed that the child knew more than they did about all this. They were all completely correct.
"ENTRY NUMBER 3; Extracting a soul from a living monster would require incredible power... Besides being impractical, doing so would instantly destroy the soul's host." The recording said, no emotion was apparent in her voice as if she was just a shell, distant from all emotion and feeling.
"And unlike the persistent SOUL of humans, the SOUL's of monsters disappear almost immediately after death. If only I could make a monster's SOUL last..." The recording trailed off with a small sigh, it shut off, they moved to the next one.
"ENTRY NUMBER 5; I've done it, using the blueprints I've extracted it from the human SOULs. I believe that this is what gives their souls the strength to persist after death." The audio paused for a moment and Undyne felt a chill ride up her spine.
"The will to keep living... The resolve to change fate. Let's call this power... DETERMINATION." The audio ended, Frisk felt a little nauseous.
"Wait, where's number four?" Undyne asked, she went back to the other and it read three, the one they were at now was five... Where was four? They continued on.
"I don't know, this is a very strange place." Toriel admitted, they turned the corner and walked on but with each step the silence got more and more deafening.
"Alphys?" Undyne asked but the doors snapped shut behind the hurried woman, Undyne tried to pry the doors open but it didn't work. The she noticed the lights on the doors go out and a slot for some kind of key next to the door, if Undyne knew anything about her girlfriend it was that she always had a backup just in case, so she went to search the small lobby like room, Undyne looked around and found another glowing sign.
"POWER ROOM" Was what it read, she wondered what it was for and Frisk pointed for them to go down the long left hallway, they followed the child Undyne silently prayed that her girlfriend wouldn't do anything to stupid and try to do something she knows wont be good for anyone, she let out a soft sigh and followed the small child down the hallway.
