Chapter 23

Sans awoke from the dream with sweat coating him and droplets staining the sheets, he kicked off the blankets and found himself panting for breath and mostly clothed excepting his hoodie, he looked out the small window and stood at it's ledge with questions he hadn't thought he'd ever have, he wondered if that other him was still in his mind even after he had awoken from the jumbled memories.

"I am." He heard a voice say, he jumped slightly before resettling and sighing, his flaming eye creating magic that pooled in the room, that same mist began to gather and create a form, that form stood with a dead smile and large gash that bled across his chest.

"Wha... You know what? I'm not even gonna ask." Sans said as he turned to look at the silent mountain caverns, the other him didn't seem bothered by this.

"BROTHER! IT IS ALMOST NOON, YOU SHOULD-" Papyrus cut himself off as the door to his brother's room swung open under his grasp, only to see his brother standing at his window, he looked oddly contemplative.

"Be.... Awake." Papyrus finished, Sans seemed to snap out of his trance, slightly shocked, he looked toward his brother.

"Oh, sorry brother, I did not know if you were awake yet." Papyrus said, following lie an awkward silence as Sans wasn't sure if his brother could see the dystopian him.

"Well, I will be at Undyne's, we are going to be training for a while..." Papyrus tried to fill the silence, Sans just smiled pleasantly at his younger brother.

"Alright, just be home before lunch." Sans replied, Papyrus stood there for a moment.

"Oh yeah, you do not remember..." Papyrus muttered, Sans did not respond as his brother probably did not mean to be heard, Papyrus looked at him.

"Oh, actually... Me and Undyne usually get lunch after practice, that's when we practice cooking together!" Papyrus said jovially, his attitude lightened the atmosphere, well, a bit.

"Alright, see you around supper time?" Sans asked, the other him just rolled his eyes and turned to face the window.

"Of course brother, goodbye for now!" Papyrus said as he closed the door, as Sans heard the familiar tromping of his brother's boots down the stairs, he exhaled.

"Man, he's always so sweet." Sans' dystopian double chided, Sans smiled and nodded slightly.

"Yeah, no matter how old he gets he'll never stop being a fricken angel..." Sans sighed with a grin, he felt his hunger pool in his stomach as he stretched lightly.

"Mmm, I think I'll go make myself some breakfast." Sans muttered as he trotted down the rickety stairs, the... Whatever it was, floated beside him.

"So, uh..." Sans started, getting out the ingredients.

"Wait, lemmie guess what you're gonna say." The other him chimed with enthusiasm that sounded real and looked real but there was something about him that made him seem so down. Maybe it was how his posture was lazily slumped, how his tone lingered in the air with all the energy of a dead sloth, or maybe it was the giant gash across his chest. Sans just sighed and nodded with a pleasant smile as he took out the other ingredients, the other him just kinda.... Floated there, his expression wavered.

"You're wondering if I'm real, or if you're just hallucinating, right?" The other him said, Sans' maw opened slightly in surprise as the other him chuckled and crossed his arms.

"Knew it, and to answer your question, I am real..." Sans sighed in relief, the other him didn't seem finished as he started the burner and began to cook the eggs.

"But only you can see me, unless you want someone else to see me in which they can but only for as long as you need." He said, Sans raised an eyebrow.

"Uh, mind if I ask how? And uh, why?" Sans asked as he turned toward the figure.

"It's your magic that's making me kinda corporal, so I'd assume it has something to do with that." He said, Sans shrugged as he flipped the eggs and dusted a small amount of salt and pepper over them, he then flipped the eggs onto a plate, turned off the burner and sat down at the table, all in complete silence.

"Interesting." Sans muttered as he finished eating the eggs, he stood up and opened the fridge, staring at the ingredients and several ketchup bottles. He quickly closed the fridge only to be met with a look of questioning from the other him, he sighed and didn't notice how the door opened and shut.

"Look, as far as I know, we're gonna be separate entities, so you really need something I can call you." Sans said, the other him acted as if he was stroking a beard, silence.

"Joe?" he suggested, Sans looked at him for a moment with wide eyes before 'Joe' laughed.

"I'm kidding, I'm kidding. But seriously, who names their kid Joe? Yes, my special darling, I know exactly what I'll name you, the the nurse asks what his name is and she just goes 'Joe', how does that make any sense?" He said, Sans nodded and chuckled.

"True, but that doesn't answer my question." Sans said, noting how easily the other him had changed subjects.

"Well, what about Mavi?" He asked after a few seconds, Sans blinked, then nodded.

"Mavi it is." He replied, not noticing how Alphys had been listening, but only to one half of the conversation, she stood with her back against the wall and her eyes wide displaying large levels of shock, why was Sans talking to himself, and who was 'Mavi'?
