Chapter 17
Pancakes had been made and eaten, complements to the chef had been given and Papyrus had marveled about how something other than spaghetti could be this good, but questions still hung thick in the air along with the scent of maple syrup and the warmth that Toriel seemed to emanate.
"U-Umm, Sans?" Alphys asked, Sans looked towards her.
"Yeah?" Sans asked as he put his plate in the sink and walked back to the table, Alphys sighed.
"Uh, W-What's a m-magic attack?" Alphys asked, Sans had known he would have to explain it since it happened so he just let the science side of him and run with it.
"Well, you know how monster's emotions come straight from their soul, yeah?" Sans asked, everyone nodded given that was common knowledge for most.
"Well since their magic and attacks come from the soul too, therefor making their magic directly correlated with their emotional state. You following so far?" Sans asked, the rest of the monsters at the table seemed intrigued as they nodded.
"So, there should be two types of training, monsters with a lot of innate magical prowess and talent would have to learn how to control their emotions or they might hurt others. While the more monsters with less innate magical ability or prowess would have to work the way most think of as training, for that same level of magic but wouldn't have to, say, put a cap on their emotions." Sans explained, he paused as Alphys looked at him and adjusted her glasses.
"B-But what d-does that have t-to do with a m-magic attack?" Alphys asked.
"Well, I have a very high UML, or Underlying Magic Level, therefor I have to keep a constant lock on my emotions or I can and may hurt others around me as I explained." Sans continued.
"A magic attack is where I lose control of my emotions sending me into a downward spiral, usually this is with negative emotions. Though it has never happened to me, I believe it may also work the same way if I were to be exceedingly happy, I might accidentally create something that would make others happy, but as soon as that joy died down the magic would die with it and take away whatever thing it was." Sans finished, Undyne looked starstruck.
"You mean you're that good and you don't even have to train?" Undyne said, Sans glared slightly.
"No, I mean that I have to keep a constant lid on my emotions as to not kill everyone around me, that is just the same training, it's mentally taxing, not physically taxing." Sans explained in terms she may understand better, like murder.
"That's. So. COOL!" Undyne exclaimed, whelp, that was not at all the reaction Sans was expecting, but on the bright side at least he wasn't a Sans-kabab yet.
"It is?" Sans asked, Undyne started to rant about something involving what sets him off but he was only partly listening, she was wrong. It wasn't cool, it was awful, terrible. Maybe if she knew what he had done she wouldn't think that, but how could she know if he didn't even know himself?
"Uh, Undyne?" Alphys cut off her girlfriend who then looked at her, this snapped Sans out of his haze as he hoped he hadn't done anything to hurt them.
"C-Can I s-speak with S-Sans for a moment?" Alphys asked, not waiting for an answer as she pulled Sans away from the group and up the stairs, opening the door to Sans' room and shutting it behind her quickly, Sans looked at her.
"Sans, i-it's about your m-memory." Alphys explained, Sans nodded before she continued.
"I-I've been l-looking into it, t-to see if I could help, a-and I think I f-found a way." Alphys stuttered out.
"I-I'm gonna have to t-take some scans of your soul and o-of your skull to be sure, b-but since memories have been re-resurfacing... I-I think your m-m-memories are still in there, and I-I think I found a-a way to help speed up the process." Alphys explained.
"Alright, how?" Sans asked, Alphys scratched the back of her neck and looked away.
"Erm, I-I think I c-can make a machine t-to see your memories, b-but several o-other souls h-have to help..." Alphys said, implying that their friends would have to help.
"Alright, what does helping involve?" Sans asked as he didn't want his friends to be hurt because of him, never again Alphys's eyes darted around, looking everywhere excepting his eyes, that was definitely not a good sign.
"T-That's the t-thing, w-we'd be watching your entire l-life's memories f-from your point of view. S-So we don't h-have to do i-it if you're n-not comfortable with t-that w-we can just w-wait for the memories to r-resurface on their own, b-but I d-don't know how long t-that might take." Alphys explained, Sans shook his head.
"Nah, it's cool. Besides, I need to answer your questions anyways so it's like... Hitting two birds with one stone, you know?" Sans asked, Alphys shakily nodded.
"A-Alright, i-if you're okay with it..." She trailed off, standing awkwardly, Sans chuckled.
"You wanna go now?" Sans asked, Alphys looked at him with an odd expression.
"I-I... W-What for?" Alphys asked, Sans let out a laugh as he sensed a presence outside his door, he heard no attempts for them to get in so he let them be.
"The soul and head scans you talked about?" Sans asked, Alphys face palmed.
"O-OH! O-Of course." Alphys exclaimed, she opened the door to Sans' room and Undyne fell over, Sans couldn't help but laugh at the slightly flustered fish woman.
"I-I WASN'T SPYING!" Undyne exclaimed, the tint of green over her cheeks.
"Undyne, you and I both know that statement is a little... Fishy." Sans punned, he heard Toriel's familiar and melodic laugh from downstairs as Undyne blushed more, Papyrus groaned.
"Alphys, kiss your girlfriend, she gets jealous when you spend to much time around monsters other than her." Sans said cooly as he walked toward the stairs.
"U-Undyne?" Alphys asked, a warm butterscotch color coating her cheeks but as it heated it became a warmer kind of poppy red, Undyne looked at her girlfriend.
"D-Did you t-think m-me and S-Sans w-were..." Alphys paused, Undyne looked ashamed.
"Undyne, I-I've got you, I-I don't n-need anyone else." Alphys assured as she pressed a kiss to her girlfriend's forehead, then pressing one to her lips, Sans smiled as he made his way down the stairs, he was glad that was over.
"Hey Al, we goin' or what?" Sans asked, Alphys smiled calmly at her girlfriend who then smiled back but suspicion settled in the fish monsters gaze, where on earth could they be going? Undyne glowered at Sans but he didn't seem to notice.
"Y-Yeah, it m-might take a while s-so we s-should probably head out so we c-can get back before s-sunset." Alphys said, checking her watch as it read that it was almost noon, she pulled on her lab coat and trotted down the stairs.
"Might I ask where you're headed?" Toriel asked as she read the fish woman's painfully angry gaze, Sans looked up at her as he zipped up his hoodie.
"Al is taking me to her lab." Sans said with a grin, she nodded but Undyne didn't seem satisfied, Alphys looked at him.
"Sans, hurry up!" Alphys hurried as she opened the door to the biting winds, Sans smiled and waved to the group over his shoulder as he exited the building, not noticing Undyne following close behind as they walked.
"Brrr, i-it's so c-cold! H-How can you s-stand this w-weather?" Alphys asked as she hugged her lab coat closer to her chest, Sans shrugged and looked at her once before unzipping his hoodie and shrugging it off of his shoulders.
"I'm a skeleton, I don't have nerves so the whole cold thing doesn't bother me much, here." Sans said as he held out his hoodie to her, she shivered but refused.
"P-Put that b-back on! Y-You may not b-be cold, b-but you can s-still catch h-hypothermia!" Alphys exclaimed, Sans would've offered to take a shortcut but sadly he didn't remember the lab much other than fragments. Heck he didn't even remember where it was, they might get lost in the void of time and space, that was not an experience that he would care to repeat.
"Hey, don't give me the cold shoulder, seriously, you're gonna become an Alph-sickle." Sans punned, Alphys let out a shivering laugh before finally giving in when Sans draped it over her shoulders, she pulled it closer and pulled her arms through the sleeves as it was already warm from Sans' soul.
"W-Wow! H-How are you so w-warm?" Alphys asked after her hand had bushed his, Sans held out his hand and she gingerly took it, they had a good friendship and though neither were interested in the other they would act like a couple just because the line between 'boy friend' and 'boyfriend' was literally a space.
"Probably something involving my soul and magic, but you're the doctor, you tell me." Sans joked, they continued over to the lab, not noticing how Undyne ground her teeth as she followed, Sans had given her his jacket, and they were holding hands? Her blood boiled as she shivered and ducked behind the occasional tree to stay out of sight, she just gnarred at him from a distance.
