Chapter 5
Cornelia and Flavia often walk in the garden, but if it's hot, they walk from the garden and into the forest, where there is a cold river. The boys often wander in the same forest. Since it's hot today, the girls sit under a tree near the river, and Flavia asks, "Why doesn't Marcus like climbing trees? Is he cowardly?"
"No!" Cornelia responds. "Why don't you like Marcus? He's neither cowardly nor reckless."
"But Marcus always worries. Nothing frightens Sextus."
The two of them suddenly see a wolf who stealthily slinks towards the river where they are sitting. Flavia shouted, "Marcus! Sextus! BRING HELP!" Cornelia just rushed towards the wolf, trying to snap its neck. "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, YOU BOGGLEHEADED CORNELIA?"
"Do we need boys to save us?" Cornelia said dryly.
"Don't bring gender into this, please!" Flavia responded, throwing her hands up. "MARCUS! SEXTUS! CALL ANIMAL CONTROL!" She ran to Cornelia and pulled her away from the wolf before both girls turned towards their villas. Cornelia sighed.
Sextus screamed and scrambled up the nearest tree. As he fished in his pocket for his cell phone, it fell to the ground. Oh, dear. Marcus, on the other hand, grabbed a branch and charged the wolf. "FOR THE MENDED WOOD!" The terrified wolf fled. Sextus remained in the tree long after Marcus returned to a delighted welcome at the villa. He didn't even pick his phone up to call Animal Control.
