CHAPTER 20
It was Friday.
Our school bus arrived around nine to ten in the morning. It was one of the first buses to arrive. "I'll miss you guys so much," Toyosi said, while hugging Esse and having her face buried in the crook of her neck, so it came out all muffled up.
I chuckled. "It is not like you won't see us again oh," I told her.
"Still," she replied.
I laughed.
We were on the corridor and were supposed to be down already, but Toyosi was holding us down. She also didn't seem like she was planning to release us, not until Tosin got a text and said, "Mr. Demeji is losing his cool oh, its best we start going."
"No," Toyosi dramatically whined as she let Esse go, making us chuckle.
"We shall meet again," Amarachi reassured her. "But, for now. Adios." She threw her right hand up, doing the peace sign.
She chuckled. "Bye guys," she said with a wave, causing us to wave back.
We got into the lift and headed out. I was about to step out of the hall, when I saw Khalid by a corner. "I'll meet you guys outside," I told the guys, wanting to tell him bye. They all gave me a strange look, making me smile. "I'm coming," I said with a smile, no waiting for them to reply as I began to make my way to him. It wasn't until I was close, before I realized he was on a call.
"No, she has one head sir," he said in a sad tone to the person on the other end of the line, making my heart sink. It was his dad scolding him, and I knew it.
I sighed and turned to leave, when I felt his hand grab my shoulder, making me halt.
"Yes sir, it was a girl." His voice sounded better, like my presence had helped him gain his confidence back. I couldn't bring myself to look at him, so I simply stood there. "I'm sorry sir." He was silent for a while, like he was listening. "Yes sir." Was his last reply, before the call was ended and he said to me, "Leaving already?"
I nodded, faking a smile as I turned to him. "Yes." I shrugged. "A really punctual school."
He chuckled and nodded. "Okay then. Good bye."
I nodded. "Have a good life," I said, waving at him as I walked away, not turning away from him.
He chuckled. "Amen."
I nodded. "Amen." With that, I turned and left.
When I got out, the school bus was waiting where it had dropped us the day we arrived. Mr. Demeji looked rusty, like he hadn't had enough rest, that was when I realized that, they had probably arrived her late the night before that day. "Good morning sir," I greeted him with a little bow.
He nodded, tiredly. "How are you?"
"Fine sir." With that, I got into the bus, searching for the girls. The back seat had already been taken, so I found them three seats to the back, by my right. Esse was seated with Amarachi, Tosin was alone on the pair of seats in front of them, while Joseph was seated with Collins on the seat in front of her. I flopped on the empty seat next to Tosin.
"So, how are things with him?" Amarachi asked, poking her to our arena. "Did he apologize and you forgave him once? Like silly Esse?"
"Hey, mine wasn't silly," Esse defended herself.
"And besides, holding grudges isn't even good for the mind and heart," Tosin added.
"Meh."
"Don't meh me, young lady," she replied, playfully narrowing her eyes.
I couldn't help chuckling. "It was a joint mistake, so we both apologized." I shrugged.
"And you forgave him?" Amarachi asked.
I nodded. "We forgave each other."
"Pfft." She sat back down. "Just remember that, no matter what he did, it doesn't warrant him hurting other people pride and heart. It doesn't."
I nodded. "He already knows that." With that, we began to talk and argue randomly.
At times, it was going to be the entire bus. We'd bust into singing, or games, and sometimes talks. But, in all we did, we tried to not wake Mr. Demeji from his slumber.
We arrived back at the school around seven in the evening. We were all worn out by then. Some people were already napping, while some had dissolved into gentle talks among friends, and most where busy with their phones. Mr. Demeji was wide awake by then, more active.
There wasn't any delay, we were dismissed immediately. So, we all carried our bags and retired to the hostel. Our juniors were in the dining hall, but we were told to hold still a bit. After they were done and had gone for prep, we went to have our own dinner. It was jollof spaghetti. I ate till I was filled, it was one of my fave.
After dinner, we retired back to the hostel. We had to lock our hostel, because we couldn't have the juniors coming in and asking for our phones. Mobile phones weren't allowed. We were only spared because of our trip.
We didn't sleep or stay according to our old bed arrangement, we instead formed groups and gossiped. "I low-key miss the suite," Tosin commented as she laid down on Amarachi's usual bed.
"Low-key, or high-key?" Amarachi asked, tucking her beneath her weight, as she adjusted herself on the bed.
Tosin shrugged. "A little in between."
"Hmm. The suite or Juwon?" Esse asked with a smile, playfully narrowing her eyes at Tosin.
Tosin chuckled and shook her head. "Whatever."
We all burst out laughing, then dissolving into random talks, after agreeing that we did miss it also. I couldn't deny that, it was one of the most fun two weeks of my life. It was two weeks, but with the events that happened, it felt like two years.
I smiled to myself.
