TOGETHER, THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL

The last dregs of the milkshake were sucked up, and their pockets were empty. Glasses with lip stick stained rims were shoved hazardously aside as the next drink had been brought, the variety of colours from the liquid tinting the glass. Their waiter, Andy, rolled his eyes continuously but kept blending the drinks, smiling when he thought they weren't looking. He was amazed at the fact that the two girls had somehow managed to try every flavour of milkshake, from vanilla to the newest addition, Oreo.

Rebecca hiccuped, covering her mouth daintily. Ebony chuckled, the small noise reminding her of everything cute and innocent. Her laughter came to a stop when she realised that she never thought she could have this, especially after Celeste passed. Shut up, Ebony reprimanded herself. You swore you weren't going to think about her.

Rebecca picked up her straw, twirling it around the glass. "Are you okay?"

Ebony shook herself, lifting the corners of her mouth up. "Course I am, why wouldn't I be?"

"You just looked really sad for a moment, as though you were thinking about death." Rebecca giggled, her breath catching as another hiccup rattled through her body. Ebony flashed a smile, cheek twitching under the sudden pressure. "Wait, were you?"

Wordlessly, Ebony just nodded. She plucked her straw up and began gnawing at the tip, denting the multicoloured plastic. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to be insensitive." Rebecca leaned across, resting her palm on her arm. Ebony's heart beat picked up, and she felt a fluttering in her stomach.

"It's fine. It happened a long while ago. She was great, you know? And - wow I can't believe I'm talking about my dead friend on our first date. I'm sorry." Ebony bowed her head, hoping her hair would veil her shimmering eyes. Rebecca noticed, and smiling warmly she tilted Ebony's head back up, brushing her tangled hair from her face.

"I want to know everything about you - the good and the bad. I'm not naive enough to think that you don't have sad memories, we all do. Don't apologise." Ebony nuzzled her face into Rebecca's hand, eyes closing blissfully.

"I really needed that, thank you."

"Don't thank me either," Rebecca playfully hit her, her smile widening. She couldn't believe how lucky she'd gotten, and drinking in all of Rebecca's features, Ebony felt herself find the idea of angels more believable.

Ebony removed her cheek from her hand, pulling it towards her and fiddling with Rebecca's fingers. "She was the one who got me into all of the nerdy stuff, I mean sure I loved it before but she made me a hardcore fan with cosplaying and fan-fiction. Not only was she my best friend, she taught me a whole new way to look at life and I'll never get to thank her for that."

Rebecca tightened her fingers around Ebony's hand. "Lets go tell her."

"What?"

"Lets go to her grave, and you can thank her for everything there."

Ebony blinked, shocked gaze travelling slowly towards Rebecca. "That's a great idea, but its miles away."

"We can go on a road trip, travel there listening to her favourite music and telling stories about her then visit her grave. Oh, and make a collage of everything she loved and bury it in the dirt."

"That's too much to ask." Ebony shook her head.

"That's a lie, and we both know it."

"I haven't been there in months. She'd be so disappointed in me."

"Well I'm sure..." She paused, waiting for Ebony to tell her the name of her friend. She mumbled it, and Rebecca continued, after commenting that it was a lovely name for a lovely girl. "Celeste is proud of you for not being one of them people who let mourning take over their life."

Ebony dropped Rebecca's hand, running a hand through her hair and tightening a fist around a clump. "That's the thing, at times I feel as though she's all I can think about. I think that it must be pretty lonely for her where ever the hell she is, because there wasn't enough of her left to be buried, just ashes. Her grave is just a slab of engraved rock, and even that is enough to send me down a path I don't know I can navigate myself from. I think about what her last thoughts must've been, when that person stabbed her and drained all of the life from her body. I think about whether or not if she knew she was dying, or if she believed that help was on the way. I think about what she'd be doing at this moment if she didn't get stolen from this world." Ebony let out a staggered breath. "At times I think grief consumes me, and at others, I'm blissfully numb. I have no clue which one's better."

Rebecca watched in silence, seeing Ebony's breathing get more hysterical, her voice get higher. She wanted to say something, try to calm her down, but she was ranting and Ebony wouldn't stop talking.

"She was so full of life, always willing to go on another adventure. It just scares me that one person who's so lively can just be gone in a matter of moments. I know that death is a natural part of life but I can't help but be confused by the cloaked mans intentions. Why her? Why her and not the rapists, murders, thieves, liars, and all the dirty scum that breathes on this planet!"

Ebony tugged her hand from her head, a stinging pain sizzling at her scalp. In shock, she examined it blindly, to find nothing there.

She'd ripped her hair out.

Letting out a a staggered breath, Ebony tucked the clump into her pocket, fully aware of Rebeccas wide eyes following her movements. Neither of them spoke, the awkward silence from the beginning of the night returning. Ebony's mind whirred, tumbling into dark thoughts. She must think I'm crazy. I bet this'll be a tale she tells her friends and they snort soda from their noses. I bet this is something that'll keep her up at night. I bet she's disgusted, horrified, repulsed. Ebony wouldn't blame her if she thought that.

Ebony bit at her thumb nail, chewing at the fresh layer of polish. Disappointed in herself, she muttered. "I won't mind if you suddenly get a phone call telling you that you need to be somewhere else, or if you just run. Trust me, if I could run away from myself, I would have done it a long time ago."

Rebecca sat streamlined, not removing her eyes off of the vulnerable girl. She blinked slowly as she processed what Ebony had said, running the words through her head. After a prolonged pause, Rebecca smiled, eyes drifting from Ebony's face to the exit. "I don't blame you for having some... issues, but I honestly have to leave. I promised my brother that I'd be home about three hours ago, and I don't want him to keep worrying."

Swallowing back her misery, Ebony nodded. "I understand."

Rebecca breathed a sigh, a brighter smile lighting up her face. "Thank you for understanding, it means a lot." Pushing the chair back with a ear splitting squeak, Ebony watched Rebecca elegantly get up off of the chair, yanking her jacket from the back of the chair. "I had a great time."

"Me too." Ebony mentioned nothing of meeting up again, in fear for being rejected.

Rebecca shrugged her jacket on, fumbling with the buttons of her jacket. Her voice could barely be heard in the serene diner, and Ebony just caught what she said. "I look forward to the next time."

Ebony tilted her head, a wide grin appearing on her face. "I do too."

"Great!" The black haired woman exclaimed giddily, striding past Ebony, patting her shoulder. "I'll call you, and we can make arrangements. Expect it in the next few days, I don't think I'll be able to stay away for long."

She walked off, hand on the handle of the door when Rebecca quickly spun around. The sound of her heels clicking furiously towards Ebony made her twist her head around, curious as to what else the girl had to say.

Leaning down, Rebecca whispered seductively. "I forgot something."

It was then that Ebony experienced pure bliss, as Rebecca's smooth lips grazed her cheek, hovering for a good few moments. Ebony felt sweat gather on her palms, and she felt as though she was melting the moment the two connected. For once, Ebony didn't feel like the burning flame, and for once, she realised that sometimes it wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Just as soon as the feeling blossomed in her body, Rebecca withdrew, sauntering off with a wink thrown over her shoulder. Ebony felt deprived of oxygen, all of the oxygen having fled her lungs in the few seconds of righteousness she experienced. She felt as though she was starving, needing to devour more of this heavenly angel that walked earth.

She didn't want it, she needed it.

In a flurry, she scrambled out of her chair, snatching up her bag tossed carelessly on the floor and bolted for the door, puffing out a rushed thank you to their waiter, who only smiled and wished her luck silently. Her hands couldn't push the door open fast enough, her addiction blurring her senses and destroying her movements. Finally it fell open, and she tumbled out, faintly acknowledging the whistling wind as she stumbled into the parking lot.

A sea of cars invaded her vision, the different types and colours frazzling her mind. In her hurry and need to see Rebecca, she hadn't thought of how she would find her, or if she actually was still there. "Crap sticks," Ebony swore, tugging at her hair lightly. "I'm such an idiot."

"I beg to differ," a voice called out. It sounded vaguely familiar, but Ebony couldn't think of that as she tried to find the source of the person. Seeing the glowing embers of a lit cigarette in the shadows, she went on high alert. Hand flying to her purse, Ebony wrapped her hand around the holy water disguised as ordinary water in her bag, pulling it out, twisting the top off and spraying the mysterious voice. "Jesus Christ Ebony!"

"Who the hell are you," Ebony demanded, easily finding her knife. She kept her hand in the bag, not willing to brandish the weapon until she could find the right moment.

"For someone who I just spent the entire night with, you're pretty oblivious." Rebecca stepped out of the darkness, into the dim moonlight. In her hand was a drenched cigarette. "By the way, you owe me a smoke."

Ignoring her last comment, Ebony walked closer to her, stuffing her hands in her jean pockets. "I thought you were getting home?"

Dropping the cancer stick to the ground, Rebecca stumped it out with the bottom of her heel, some ashes floating in the wind. "I would be, but my brother is against smoking and we share the car; I don't want him to smell the smoke. It's bad enough already trying to get the smell out of my clothes." She glared at the broken cigarette on the ground. "I know I should give up, and every time I try, it just overwhelms me. Not having one is like having an itch you can't scratch, and those shitty nicotine patches are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard."

"Oh." Ebony was lost for words, focusing on the hair whipping across her face.

"Anyway, enough about my kryptonite. What are you doing out here?"

Immediately, Ebony felt her confidence plummet. To be honest, she didn't even know what she wanted from Rebecca now that she was with her. "I guess I was going home?"

Rebecca raised an eyebrow, "You guess?"

"Um, yes?"

"You looked like you lost something," Ebony pressed her lips together to stop the words 'my sanity' to slip out. "Or someone."

"Something like that." Ebony shivered, wrapping her naked arms around her chest.

Rebecca nodded to her arms, which has goosebumps risen over all of its surface. "Are you cold?"

Trying her hardest to clamp her teeth together to prevent a chattering of teeth, she replied. "Only a little bit, I'll live."

Without asking, Rebecca unbuttoned her jacket. Ebony's heartbeat picked up, and it was going so fast she believed that she'd have cardiac arrest. She felt as though it was too much for the first date, even if it was only revealing Rebecca's top underneath that hugged her body in all the right places.

Rebecca took the jacket off, stepping forward and offering it to Ebony. She wasn't paying attention, too busy drawn in her mind of dirty thoughts. Frustrated that she hadn't taken it, Rebecca clicked over to her. "For goodness sake, I'm not letting you catch your death on my watch."

She reached over, draping the fabric over Ebony's shoulders. Her fingers lingered on the exposed skin of her collar bone, and Ebony had to stop herself from grabbing her right there and then and pushing her against the wall. She let them stay there, looking up at Ebony from the tops of her lashes. Ebony's breath halted, everything feeling as though it was going in slow motion as Rebecca's hand lifted to her cheek. Ebony felt weak at the knees. After a millennia, her soft hand cupped Ebony's cheek, her thumb caressing.

"Ebony," Rebecca purred. Ebony felt rock solid, captive under her enticing gaze.

"You're so beautiful." Ebony spoke, her lips brushing Rebecca's. She smiled, wrapping an arm around Ebony's neck, hooking herself.

Ebony could feel Rebecca's breath on her skin. Her lips brushed hers when she whispered, "Lets be beautiful together."

Ebony couldn't help but feel as though she was betraying Celeste, yet the animalistic urge to show Rebecca a good time was dominant. Rebecca licked her plump lips playfully, nearing Ebony's before diving down and nuzzling her neck. Ebony held in a growl, clutching Rebecca's shoulders harder as she sucked and nibbled. Rebecca showed no mercy, peppering Ebony's neck with kisses and occasionally leaving behind a love bite. Ebony's back arched, feeling herself fall to her knees and worship a god she had no idea existed.

Tired of playing around, Ebony pushed Rebecca into the wall hard, instantly grappling at her body. Ebony teased Rebecca too, stroking her arms and kissing her collar bone before they both succumbed to the overwhelming desire. They collided in a frenzy, Ebony's rough lips scratching at Rebecca's soft ones. Hands explored each others bodies, stroking and grabbing in fits of their lust.

Ebony drew away quickly, sucking in a gulp of air, quickly returning her lips to the place where they fit perfectly. Rebecca dodged the kiss, giggling, as she kissed every inch of Ebony's face. Her nose scrunched up, and it made Rebecca laugh even harder.

Yes, they were indeed beautiful. But like all beautiful things, they were destined to be broken.
