Infected like us
Zuko cocked his gun as his eyes were wide with fear, keeping the gun raised at the door seeing it shake a little when there was a thump.
"What is that?" Katara peaked out of the room.
"Close the door," he whispered not taking his eyes off ahead of him. Another thump.
"Dude what is that?" Katara gulped now nervous.
"The infected," Zuko inhaled a shaky breath.
Suddenly the door slammed open and Katara let out a terrified shriek seeing a bigger man that had blood running down his chin, nose and from his eyes and ears, an infected looking bite on half his face as he growled looking at the two.
Zuko shoved Katara into the room and closed the door. He ran to the other side of the living room as the man charge at him.
Three gunshots echoed the apartment.
Katara covered her ears as she was in the corner of her fathers room, her body trembling as shock electrocuted her spine, to scared to move from the corner.
The door opened and she looked at Zuko wide eyes.
"Come on," he said calmly.
"Is he dead?" She whispered standing, fighting against the feeling in her knees to not give out.
"Yea," Zuko pulled the backpack around his shoulders.
They gathered their things again and Katara grabbed her gun, keeping it close to her chest as they walked through the living room to the broken open door.
She stared at the body that laid on her rug, two bullets in the head and one in its neck.
"Zuko," she whispered standing in the door of her apartment as Zuko was in the hall. He looked at her confused.
"How soon am I going to die? Be honest," she looked at him fearful.
"Do you want to live?" Zuko asked raising a brow.
"Yea," Katara nodded hopeful.
"Then you'll live, if you have the will to live through all this I don't think you'll die soon, but you won't like what you live through," he gulped and kept walking.
"Do you want to live?" She asked stepping into the hall.
"It's on and off,"
Katara followed Zuko close as he walked down the dark halls with the flashlight and gun in his hands close. Katara was intrigued by his movements as if he's been in this situation before, she's seen cops hold their flashlights and guns in movies the way he held his own.
"Where's the fire exits?" Zuko asked in a low tone not looking back at her.
"By the landlords office," she told him pointing to the right.
There was more gunshots outside that made them jump. The roads were to dangerous, going to the side routes would mean less people.
There was a red light in the side of the hall saying 'exit', Zuko pushed the metal door open and held it for Katara as he looked over his shoulder in the alleyway. There was movement in the streets but the cars honking and people screaming covered the small sound of the door closing.
He pointed to the back of the building where it lead to multiple backs of buildings, they stomped through the snow as it crunched under their boots.
"I think the snows suppose to be light tonight and tomorrow," Katara looked up at the night sky that she remembered the hue of orange from the city lights but now it was pitch black from the power outage.
"We need a car," Zuko walked over seeing a side parking lot that was for employees only.
"Think we could get a plow truck?" She joked and he thought about it but shrugged.
"Let's just get out of the city, it's not safe where there's people," he told her quietly.
"Hey, can you kind of tell me more in detail of what's going on? Zombie apocalypse and all I feel like I'm missing something," Katara walked up to his side but was startled a little to only see his scar. How could someone get a scar like that? It didn't scare her but it was something she didn't see every day.
"Don't get bit and don't get scratched," he kept his eyes ahead.
"How do you know so much?" She raised a brow.
"I don't mind my business,"
"Who's business?"
Zuko glared annoyed back at her but Katara didn't seem phased by it. She was waiting for an answer.
"I don't know you, I'm not saying anything that doesn't involve basic survival," he huffed irritated.
"Are you going to kill me? Or hurt me? I don't know you either, your a strange man that broke into my home,"
Zuko stopped and looked at her frowning. He looked at her face, trying to read this weird girls expression. She was afraid like a few hours ago, she was curious , maybe it was her way of trying to cope with the world that they'll be forced into.
"I'm not going to hurt you, but I might kill you depending on what it comes too," Zuko nodded as they stood on the sidewalk face to face.
"If I get bit or scratched?" She offered.
"And I expect the same from you," he agreed.
"To kill you?" Katara pursed her lips not expecting that.
"I don't want to be one of those things, I rather kill myself before I turn," Zuko frowned.
"How long would you have?" She whispered.
Zuko inhaled a deep breath, he wasn't suppose to know this much. But if the rumor of how long it takes for those who get infected to die and turn, could help some people out.
"24 hours, then you die and within minutes you turn wanting to kill, so yea I don't exactly want to be one of those," Zuko told her in a low tone as snow fell around them. It made the city seem abandoned, it was quiet as they were both silent.
"You knew this was coming because you didn't mind your business?" She whispered wide eyes. It didn't seem real still.
"We need to get going, it's night time and we aren't safe," Zuko tsked walking again.
Katara hugged her body with a small shiver and looked over her shoulder seeing corpses in the street, devoured or had bullets in their heads. She felt sick seeing a woman with her insides displayed for the world and her legs were bitten up, she was alive but was slowly crawling towards her.
"Wait I'm coming, hold on," Katara held the gun tighter to her body and ran to catch up with the stranger she now was stuck with.
