Mari's back ached as she held her position, she remembered what the older man told her and felt it when the line started to go slightly slack. "Pull!" Gi-hun yelled from the front, Mari froze before she did as instructed and started to pull in sync with the rest of her team. She could feel her hands were getting sweaty and starting to burn from the rope but she held on, her eyes went wide as she realized they were starting to go closer to the edge. "Do something!" Mari yelled voice going hoarse from grunting.
"Pull yourselves together and listen up! When I give the sign just take three steps forward." Mari's eyes went wide as he heard what Sang-woo instructed them to do, he was going to lead them to their deaths if they did what he asked but it seemed like Mari wasn't the only one who thought like that because 212 spoke up. "Go forward? Are you crazy?" She yelled. "We have to make them trip!" Sang-woo replied.
"That's bullshit!" 212 screamed out. "Let's give it a shot!" Gi-hun instructed, Mari, gulped as she tightened her hands around the rope. "No, I can't do it!" 212 screamed out, Mari knew they didn't have time for the banter and going back and forth on if they could do it or not. "If you can't, you'll die!" The part where they will die went unsaid but it was known, it wasn't just one of the person's lives on the line, it was all of their lives. "On the count of three!" Sang-woo took charge. "One!"
"Two!"
"Three!" Mari felt like her legs were going to go under her as she walked three steps forward but it felt like her teammates were pushing her. She almost let out a scream when she saw Gi-hun almost fall off the platform but she tightened her hands around the ropes. "Pull!" Sang-woo yelled, Mari could feel the blood rushing to her head as she breathed deeply pulling backward.
Mari was bouncing as she pulled trying to get the other team off the platform, she could hear the other team screaming out no when they got closer to the edge. Mari closed her eyes tightly and pulled, her eyes flashed open when she could feel herself being pulled forward, her feet were slipping out from under her as she tried to get a grip but she watched as a blade came down and cut the rope that was in the middle. Mari fell on her back hard, her eyes closed from the impact she kept them closed trying to slow her racing heart.
She lifted her hands in front of her face and saw they were red and close to bleeding from the rope, she didn't move as the guards walked in front of her and lifted them all into sitting positions. She watched as they unlocked their shackles, they were raised and guided into the elevator, she stood beside the wall and the realization of what she did came crashing down onto her.
She slid down the grated wall and sat next to 212 on the floor. "Hey, who are you praying to right now?" Ji-yeong asked she was standing beside Mari who furrowed her brows and looked from her best friend to the man who was across from them on the floor muttering something. "To god?" Ji-yeong clarified for the man who still hasn't stopped muttering whatever it was under his breath. "Do you think you're alive thanks to God?" Ji-yeong tilted her head to the side as she looked at the man. She huffed a laugh and squatted forward putting her hands on her knees. "You're still breathing and moving that tongue of yours thanks to that old man and that guy over there who pulled out that awesome trick last-minute. So If you're going to thank anyone, thank them." Once Ji-yeong was finished speaking, the man slowly lifted his head.
"You poor lost lamb. Can't you hear the cries of those who were nailed to the cross today? We lived to see another day thanks to their blood and sacrifice. On behalf of all us sinners, I am thanking the Lord for his decision and their sacrifice, and saying a prayer." Both Ji-yeong and Mari scoffed. "Bullshit. You killed them yourself. So we all get to go to heaven if we mumble a few prayers? Shit, then I have to pray too." Ji-yeong clasped her eyes tightly along with her hands, the action made Mari let out a slight chuckle.
"Heavenly father, we worked together as a team today to send many people to your side. Please help us send more people to your side from now on-" Ji-yeong was cut off by Sae-byeok of all people. "Quiet." Ji-yeong tilted her head toward Sae-byeok. "Me? Or that guy?" Mari couldn't help but smile at Sae-byeok's response. "Both of you." Before Ji-yeong could reply the elevator rumbled to a stop and the doors opened, they were guided out and led down the walkway again.
Mari's legs burned as she walked down the walkway following the guard who was leading them back to the room they slept in, Mari looked down at her hands as she walked and winced when she poked at the red raw skin. She was doing anything to try and forget what just happened, she was used to people dying around her but after she caused the debt collector to die she vowed never to be responsible for anyone's death again but here she was, responsible for the death of ten people and she had a feeling that the ten people weren't the end.
