Earth Mode ON: FIFTEEN
My head span at the realization and I suddenly felt like my legs couldn't hold me anymore. I felt the need to speak, but for some reason I couldn't. The realization caused an extremely huge lump to get stuck in the middle of my throat, rendering me speechless. Due to my mouth's inability to talk at that moment, I allowed my eyes to form tears to express how I felt instead. I wanted to run downstairs and not waste any more time, but I was terrified. All I could ever fear at that moment was to descend those stairs and find Taehyung injured in any way. I wouldn't be capable of handling anything.
"T-Taehyung is downstairs!" I said and let my tears fall.
"What the hell is he even doing down there?!" He shouted as he helped me jump walk back to where the stairs were.
"You-You told him to go look for something-" I said but got interrupted.
"But we are on ground floor, if he went downstairs then he must be where they keep the-" he said and then his eyes widened at what he was about to say.
"Where they keep the what?" I asked him, but his body was busy getting drained from all colours it contained.
"We have to go downstairs quickly!" He said and then pulled me along with him harshly. I tried my best to jump quickly to catch up with his pace. The moment we took the turn on the stairs, the sound became a bit more familiar. It sounded like a strong gush of water was flowing somewhere and when I took a look around, I finally realized what Chung Ae had been trying to tell me.
The moment we were off the stairs, I saw a locked door with a freaked out Taehyung behind it. The door seemed like it was made from wood of extremely good quality, and it had a glass pane at the front of it. Taehyung was busy trying to unlock the door, but he couldn't open it no matter how much he tried.
The moment he noticed our presence, he put his hands on the glass and started banging hard.
"Get me out of here!" He shouted, but his voice came out a bit faint and then started messing with the door handle again, but it seemed like the door was seriously jammed. Behind him, I saw a huge water pipe busted open and tons of water was flowing out of it at a really high pace. The water levels in there were rising very quickly and I couldn't help but freak out alongside Taehyung.
I jumped my way as quickly as I possibly could towards him and tried to open the door. I pulled, pushed and banged but nothing worked. On the other side of the door, Taehyung was looking all around him for a way to break free, fear written all over his face.
"Taehyung we'll get you out of there! Hang on!" I shouted so he can hear me well enough.
"Please hurry!" He replied back. It seemed as though the water had already reached his waist, because by that point he was freaking out to the maximum.
"Chung Ae what do we do?!" I asked him, my eyes still glued to the door as its handle kept on moving up and down vigorously due to Taehyung's constant pushing.
"There is a lot of water in there so we should forget about trying to use the door knob. Um... let me think," he said and tried his best to remain calm so he could think of a good solution to that messed up situation.
I jumped my way closer to the door and put my hand on it. The water had reached his torso, and he looked so scared. His eyes were looking at nothing but the level of the water as it got closer to his face the more time passed. I didn't know if he had already gave up on his life or if he was just trusting us to get him out of there, but in both cases I was sure that he knew that there was no use in messing with the handle anymore because he moved away from the door and was standing in the middle of the locked room.
Seeing him terrified that way tore my heart apart and my whole body started shaking alongside his. I could see fog forming on the glass pane in front of me as I breathed against it, my breath becoming uneven as i watched the water rise close to his lips. My lips started trembling and tears found their way down my eyes at the sight of his head tilted slightly upward to prevent the water from entering his mouth or nose.
"D-don't feel scared. I'm here. It's okay. You'll be alright," I said, but stuttered due to my trembling lips. He nodded his head at me and a tear slipped from his eye and into the water when he noticed how close the water was to his head.
"I'll get you out of there. You just have to wait for a moment," I said and he nodded again.
"I'm-I'm not scared. I know you will save me," he replied, and it made my heart drop.
He is too precious and I can't lose him. Never.
"Seo Yeon! I know what we can do!" Chung Ae suddenly said which made my head shoot into his direction with hope. I jumped over to him and held his arm tight for balance.
"We can unscrew the nails at the hinges. Maybe if I try to do this, the water will push the door and he will be out," Chung Ae suggested.
"There are a lot of nails though. It will take so much time. Can we at least break the window so the water can flow out?" I asked him. He walked closer to the door and knocked on the glass then shook his head.
"It's-uh," he said and rubbed his forehead in frustration," It's a double glazed glass, maybe even triple. There is no way we can even make a crack through that."
What do we do now? The longer we take, the more the water levels rise. Even if unscrewing all the nails will take time, we should still give it a go. As they say, something is better than nothing.
"Fine fine. Unscrew the nails at the hinges! But make it quick!" I said quickly and looked at Taehyung who was by then floating in the water. He looked like he was trying to keep calm despite the fact that all the air was going to disappear at any moment, but whatever he was trying to do, well, he was failing miserably at it.
"Hold on in there Taehyung! We'll get you out!" I shouted loud enough for him to hear me. He gave me a faint smile as a response and tried stabilizing his breathing. Meanwhile, Chung Ae had already started searching the area for any screwdriver.
"There must be a toolbox around here," he talked to himself as he searched. All I saw around us was trash. There was nothing useful at all that could've been used as a screwdriver or any tool in general.
"If there was a toolbox then it probably got washed away as well," I told him, but he shook his head at me as he searched the area actively.
"We are down in a basement and the toolbox is too heavy. I don't think the tsunami water would have been capable of carrying it all the way up there," he said and continued searching.
I turned my head in the direction of the glass pane and tried to look at Taehyung who was floating near the ceiling. My mouth formed an assuring smile and he made sure to return it despite his tough condition. Seeing Taehyung was impossible by then. I had to bent down to be capable of taking a look at his face, so without putting in the effort of bending down, all I was capable of seeing were his arms and legs which were in constant motion.
I tried to look everywhere except at him or else I would've had a mental breakdown which was the last thing that situation needed. All I wished to do at that moment was to break down the walls that were keeping him trapped. It was the only barrier between the two of us.
I kept on looking around for anything that could possibly help us release Taehyung in case Chung Ae couldn't find a toolbox. My leg kept on kicking the trash and the broken pieces of metal around in an attempt of getting a better view of the ground beneath them. As I was looking around, my nose captured the pungent odor that we smelled back at the entrance, but it was even stronger. That smell managed to capture all my attention and I found myself following my senses to the source of the smell and of course I didn't fail myself. My eyes widened the moment I saw where that odor originated from and so I jumped back rapidly to where Chung Ae was.
"I think we have a very serious problem here," I told him as he threw away huge pieces of metal and wood around rapidly in an attempt to find a tool box.
"I'm close to finding the toolbox so don't worry," he said without even sparing me a glance.
"It's not about that," I said and causing him to finally turn his head and look at me.
"The gas pipes. They are leaking."
