Despair

Darwin who had been besides Alex when they all heard the thudding from outside, tensed.

"What was that?" He patted Alex on the shoulder as he stalked forward. Lila stiffened up at his urgent demeanor.

"No, something doesn't feel right," Darwin shook his head. Everyone followed him to the large window that currently had its curtains shut.

Alex lead Lila by her hand. When the curtains were opened, they didn't see anything. Nobody.

"No guards?" Lila mumbled to everyone, she clutched Alex's arm to her chest. Darwin started looking up to the sky as sounds came from above.

"What is that..." he trailed off. Everyone peaked up.

Yelling from afar could be heard as it gradually got louder, from above dropped a body.

Everyone jumped back, Lila and Raven screaming. Alex jolted back, shoving Lila behind him. Everyone retreating further into the room.

Not even a moment later, bodies started raining down from above. All of them smacking against the cement with dead weight.

"Holy shit. Holy shit," Lila went pale. Darwin began backing everyone to the wall, huddling up.

Raven was crying and Lila gripped her arm with her free hand. Alex keeping a tight grip on her other.

More agents flooded the court, one of them banging on the window. Shouting at them to get back, everyone complied.

"Do not leave that room! We're under attack!"

Just as the man finished, Lila screeched as a red man appeared behind them all.

"Behind you! Look behind you!" Raven and Darwin screamed.

The group of young mutants all ducked behind the couches as the soldiers shot at the vanishing man.

Lila covered her ears as she was squished between Raven and Alex. The blonde gripped her head and pushed her farther down to keep her out of sight.

Darwin stayed on his feet and used his body to shield the rest, ready to use his mutation as the glass broke from the spray of bullets.

Just as Lila thought it couldn't get worse, out of the opposite window they saw what seemed to be a tornado wiping out everything outside.

"What the fuck-" Alex grunted. Gun shots were heard farther out by the corridor as the red man from before sliced remaining soldiers to bits.

Darwin's eyes widened, "Stay here my ass!" Lila would have laughed if it was any other situation.

"Let's go! We need to go!" The oldest of the group lead everyone out of the death trap of a room. Alex was the first to follow, dragging Lila behind him.

"Don't let go of my hand," Alex pushed her in front of him to keep his eyes on her. "No matter what."

Lila nodded with wide eyes. Getting through the hallway they were stopped by more soldiers.

"We can help!" Lila yelped as they shoved them all back. The group tried to fight them out of the way to get to safety.

The ground shook beneath them and Lila glanced up as her pupils shrunk in fear.

"Run!" she bellowed as an explosion went off.

Soldiers were blown back as the group booked it back to the room. They were all cornered, tornado sweeping everything on one side and the red man finishing off the last soldiers.

"We're trapped," Lila croaked as she held onto Alex's jacket. A body was sent through the last remaining window.

Darwin had backer everyone against the wall, him, Alex, and Hank acting as a barrier as the man who made the tornados and the red man walked through the windows.

"Everybody stay calm," Darwin's voice shook before everyone went silent.

And beyond the doors they all heard, "Wait! Wait. You want the mutants? They're right through that door. Just let us normal people go."

Lila pressed her face into Alex's back as she felt hot tears fall down her cheeks.

The sounds of that soldier dying echoed, before the door was opened. In walked an older white man, who was in a black suit. He wore an odd helmet and a leering smile.

"Where's the telepath?" he turned to the red man.

"Not here."

"Too bad... at least I can take this silly thing off," he chuckled before sliding the metal helmet off. Everyone stared at the man before he began speaking.

"Good evening," he nodded to the young mutants. "My names Sebastian Shaw."

Lila balked as the very man the Charles had been warning them about starting world war 3 was standing in front of them.

"And I am not here to hurt you," he walked forward casually.

Interrupting him, a soldier popped out with a gun trained on him. The red man barely broke a sweat as he teleported to snap the man's neck.

Continuing as if nothing happened, Shaw strode closer. "My friends... there's a revolution coming! When mankind discovers who we are and what we can do," he emphasized.

"Each of us will face a choice. Be enslaved or rise up to rule," he whispered. "Choose freely but know that if you are not with us. By definition you are against us. So, you can stay, fight for the people who hate and fear you. Or join me and live like kings... or queens." Lila made eye contact with the intimidating man for a second and darted her eyes away.

Shaw held his hand out, waiting. Lila squeezed her eyes shut, just wishing for him to be gone.

She was taken aback when Angel slowly took the outstretched hand.

"Angel!" Raven was shocked. Sean's shoulders slumped, "Are you kidding me?"

"C'mon," the girl with wings nodded. "We don't belong here," her voice was raspy with emotion.

"And that's nothing to be ashamed of."

Raven glared as everyone in the group was stiff. "We have to do something."

Hushed whispers between the group flittered around, Lila reluctantly let go of Alex's hand as she stepped back.

Darwin sighed heavily, before stepping away from the group and towards Shaw. Alex shoved his had off before Darwin called to Shaw to stop.

"I'm coming with you."

"Good choice, tell me about your mutation," Shaw smirked.

"I adapt to survive." Alex paced towards the middle of the room, eyeing them closely. Lila stood in front of Raven, nudging her back towards Hank and Sean.

"So I guess I'm coming with you." Shaw nodded to Darwin and waved him over to Angel. Everyone watched Darwin approached her, suddenly he yelled.

"Alex!"

"Get out!" Alex growled and Lila shoved everyone farther back. Alex activated his mutation.

"Get behind me!" She raised her hands up quickly, a slab of earth flew from the ground. She pushed everyone into a crouch as they hid behind the shield.

Alex aimed for Shaw as Darwin shielded Angel. Expecting to hear an explosion, nothing followed.

Lila looked out and saw Alex's face fall. Everyone watched in horror as Shaw began absorbing the cosmic energy.

"Protecting your fellow mutants... that's a noble gesture." Shaw grunted as he shrunk down the energy he'd absorbed into a small ball.

Darwin was shocked but quickly lunged to attack Shaw. Lila flinched as Shaw overpowered Darwin, gripping his face.

He whispered something Lila couldn't make out and passed the energy into Darwin. Her brows furrowed as she allowed the shield she'd made to fall.

Darwin staggered back as Shaw left him there. The group promptly teleported away.

"N-No..."

Lila covered her mouth as she cried out, watching as Darwin tried to adapt to the ticking time bomb put inside of him.

With the last of his strength he reached out to them, exploding only moments later.

Lila pressed a hand to her racing heart as her legs gave out. She crouched on the ground, her eyes blurring with tears.

"Oh god," she gasped out. Unable to calm her racing heart, she tried to stifle her cries. Raven fell down besides her, knocking Lila out of her haze.

Lila looked up, blinking away the tears and saw Alex standing in shock.

Pushing herself up quickly she stumbled to Alex. Gripping his arms and shoulders to check if he was okay.

When he didn't respond, she held his face. "Alex," she rasped as her skin was red and blotchy from crying.

"I..." he choked out.

"You didn't do anything," Lila cried softly. "You did your best."

"He killed-" Alex staggered. Lila kept him steady, wrapping her arms around his waist as he practically fell into her.

Alex's face was pale and Lila helped him sit on the ground.

"I'll be right back," she whispered to him. He didn't respond as Lila went to Hank to help him with Raven.

From the courtyard, dozens of armed soldiers ran in all of a sudden.

"Get down!" They screamed and pointed their guns at Alex who was the closest.

"No! No!" Lila screamed and ran to stand in front of him. She blocked Alex from their sights as her knees wobbled, all of the group held their hands up.

"We- We're with Moira Mactaggert! She brought us in and we were attacked," Lila wished she could stop crying. "Please-Please just stop, one of us was killed."

The soldiers closest to the rooms radio went off, he listened intently before signaling for everyone to lower their guns.

"Her story checks out. We're to escort you to a safe point. Please follow us," he waved a hand towards one of the exits.

Lila sighed in relief and quickly turned to Alex, who was still on his haunches.

He glanced up at her with watery eyes and Lila gripped his hands, helping him up slowly.

"We have to go," she whispered gently to him. He nodded once and Lila was glad to feel his arm wrap around her shoulder. He tugged her close as they were lead outside to safety.

Instructed to wait here where they could sit, Lila held Alex's hands in her lap.

"You know it's not your fault right," she rubbed his thigh gently.

"I didn't pull the trigger, but I practically handed that guy a loaded fucking gun," he ran his hands over his face.

Lila frowned sympathetically, wiping at the remnants of tears on her face.

"Charles and Erik will be back. When they get here, we can make sure he didn't die for nothing," Lila whispered as her brown eyes clashed with Alex's blue eyes.

His shoulders were slumped as they were huddled together away from the rest of the group. He nodded and she eventually tugged him over to sit with everyone else.

Lila rest her head on his shoulder as everyone sat in silence, an overall sense of dread hanging over them.

Alex brushed a hand through her now knotty hair and she gasped when he pressed a kiss to her head.

"You didn't get hurt right?" he mumbled into her hair.

"No. You?" she peaked up.

He shook his head before rest it back on the large bench everyone sat on.
