Chapter 3

I honestly don't know how to react to all of this. So much has happened to night, it just has been going to fast. I was in too much shock to feel anything. Though all the other dogs around me were so quiet and tense, as if a storm was looming. Just the atmosphere of the car made me shiver. The scent, the noise, the mixed emotions of everyone around me, it made me sick to my stomach. I felt like a bird trying to fly from the ground but something was holding me back, and all I could do was watch the other birds fly off into the horizon.

My thoughts vanished as I felt a tiny furry paw on my shoulder. I kind of forgot for a few seconds that I was still in the human van. I looked up to see what it was. It was a blue Merle Shetland sheepdog, or also known as a sheltie.

"Ummm May I help you?" I asked.

"You better get back in your cage" he rambled quickly "the humans are coming".

I pricked up my ears and heard strange footsteps that seemed to be getting closer. I quickly scrambled up and ran back up my cage. I gave a quick death glare at the yorkie underneath me and he seemed to get the message. I knew after my little threat to him he wouldn't mess with me again.

I climbed up higher and rapidly shut the cage door in front of me. Well I tried to at least. For some reason, every time I tried to keep it close it kept on opening up again. There had seemed to be some sort of latch that could attach the door to the cage. Though I couldn't seem to understand on how it worked. Then I thought of an idea. I laid down and had held one of my claws on the door and kept it shut. It seemed like I was just laying down, but actually it was keeping the door shut.

Soon the door opened, 'here we go' I thought to myself. There they were, the humans who murdered my family. I growled deeply at that them, baring my teeth and ruffling my fur out, but they took no notice of me. In fact they took no notice of anyone, they just started taking dogs out of the cages. They took them one by one. I had tried to ask the other dogs around me of where they were taking us, but none of them knew, if they even spoke. Most of the time they would just stand there, staring off into nowhere, with tails between legs and eyes wide with fear and the unknown of what would happen to them when they were taken from the "safety" of their cage.

The yorkie was taken before me and since he was underneath me, that meant I was next. 'Wow just joyful! Not!' I thought to myself.

When the yorkie was taken out he whispered in my ear as the human was getting up as his head was resting on his shoulder, "turd eater".

Then I replied "Well at least I'm not the one getting taken away by filthy humans,".

"Shut up!" He retorted.

I simply just stuck my tongue out and he had nothing to say. 'I hope I never see that human toy ever again' I thought.

I waited what seemed like forever, like a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode. My heart was racing faster than ever. My paws trembled, and almost a small whine came from me.

At long last I heard it. The footsteps getting louder and louder. I thought of the human as a storm. One foot was thunder and the other was lightning, I don't know which one was which but either way they were both scary in my opinion.

He came in like a giant bear swaying his head left and right and I kept my guard up as if he was going to charge at me. Even though I haven't seen a bear before I've heard alpha describe them to me. Big brown furry creatures, that were not to be messed with by anyone.

I couldn't act brave anymore, I had eyes wide with fear has he put his cold hearted hands on me. I felt my paws fall from underneath me, he kept a good grip, well better than he did before.

We walked out of the van as he held me and was walking toward a building I haven't seen before. By my surroundings I've never heard of mama talking about any part of the city being like this.

There were few humans around. A lot of old abandoned buildings and the scent of dogs, many dogs. Smog filled the air and gave a gloomy impression of the environment I was in. The building we were walking towards seemed abandoned too. It seemed to be pretty large, though it defiantly needed work. The roof was collapsing, wood beams nailed into the windows, spray paint that said things that I couldn't understand. Nor did I want to understand.

Though there was something odd about the direction we were going. He wasn't entering the front door, instead heading towards the back. Whenever we were allowed to observe humans I always saw they entered buildings through the front doors, not the back. Something was off here, very off. Though what hasn't been off since I got kidnapped?

I didn't even notice we were already at the back door until the human reached into his pocket to grab something. I heard a clanking sound yet I couldn't figure it out what it was. What he took out was some keys. Well I shouldn't say some, A LOT of keys.

'What could a human do with so many keys?' I thought to myself. Ohhhh well, I let the thought slip back into the back of my mind.

He opened the door, though he did it so quickly and quietly, that we were inside in the blink of an eye.

I could barely see anything around me, there were no lights around, so I used the next best thing, Sound. It was something that I learned from my mom a while back. She said it's really helpful when your walking around the city at night. She told my brother and I, if we couldn't see anything too rely on a different sense like hearing or smelling.

Well my nose was too messed up from the van smoke so I decided to use hearing. I pricked my ears forward and strained to listen to anything around me. All I could hear were dogs barking, mostly fearful barks and whines, but some were aggressive too.

I couldn't take all the noise, i flattened my ears and whimpered a little, and I let the human take me wherever he was taking me.

I sensed a change in direction and saw a little light ahead of us. We turned into some sort of almost doctor office room. There was another human there, except this one was female. I liked the females better than the males since they usually treated stray animals a lot better. Though this one was the opposite.

She grabbed my scruff and pinned me to the table the other human set me on. I looked up at her with pleading eyes but she just squeezed harder and told me to shut it.

Finally the man came over with something. Something that I have seen before. It was a collar. I had seen them in the city. It told everyone else that you were owned. You had to follow their orders and do whatever they said, or else...

As he walked closer to me, I was getting the message. Right away I was struggling to get out of the girls grip but she wouldn't budge. I twisted my body left and right, kicking my legs, trying to bite, doing everything in my power to get out.

"Let me go!" I screeched "I will not be owned by anyone!". Though I had failed. He had slipped on a collar, that wasn't too comfy yet not terrible either. There was some sort of code on the side of the collar. It had read B31. I looked up confused at the man and he smirked evilly.

"That's your new name", he said.

"That's not my name, my name is Ace,".

"Shut up mutt!".

Why did these humans never respond to us? They would always respond with 'shut up' or 'zip it'. It had confused me a lot. Well that didn't really bother me now. What was bothering me was this collar. It was very heavy, made out of some sort of metal, it made me just want to lay down all day.

The male human seemed to grab some sort of heavy metal link chain.

'Oh great, like this day wasn't as bad enough as it had been' I thought.

He picked me up and took me along to wherever he was taking me next. As we walked out of the room, the girl seemed all smug and I growled at her baring my teeth. She seemed sort of offended and I smiled to myself.

After many twists and turns in directions I can't describe, we finally came to a door, well two doors. They were right next to each other and when I would go in, it will seem like a great grand opening for me.

The human set me down and he had put on me the heavy metal chain link and attached it to my collar. The weight grew heavier and I fell to the ground. The human kicked me hard and commanded "get up!".

Now usually I would bark and growl and maybe attack him, though I remembered something. I had the collar on. I was now owned. No longer to do what I want to do. I now have to do whatever the humans want me to do.

I sighed heavily and tried with all my might to get up. It took a few tries but I managed it. I let my head hang low and the human knew I was ready. When he opened the door I thought I was going to faint.

Everything was so sudden. I couldn't take it all in at once. After a few seconds the human yanked on my chain and we went inside. I finally realized I had to man up.

It was an aisle and on both sides of me there were cages. Most of them Mastiff, fighting, and guarding breeds. They all barked so loud and it wouldn't stop. There were a single row of lights down the aisle. Some were burnt out, but most of them were flickering which almost gave me a seizure. It smelled like death in hear. Something had died in hear, multiple times. There were no windows so the smell couldn't escape. I looked underneath my paws and saw concrete underneath me and blood stains. Just what was this place?

A lot of the dogs were barking and growling as far as their chains would go. Many of them had battle scars and were wounded tremendously. Though I doubt the humans would help them.

We walked to about the middle of the aisle when we came up to an empty cage. Then the human took his big pile of keys and opened the door. He took the metal link chain and had attached it to the wall. Then he had shut the gate and walked away.

"Ohhhhhhhh no, you can't just leave me in here, come back, please!" but my screams and pleads did nothing. Now I'm stuck in this tiny cage that I.....I... I just want to go home now...

Tears ran down my face and I cried into my paws. Though no one seem to want to help me, all they wanted to do was just to kill each other.

Then all of a sudden I heard the sound of clanking chains to my left. I quickly stood up and held my ground. I knew I probably couldn't beat them (or even get to them). Though I knew I will try, I will fight.

Then it happened. A great white blurred appeared. It was some sort of white mastiff dog, that had a huge scar running down the left side of his face. His yellow eyes stared right down into mine, like two yellow flames burning me up inside.

I couldn't keep it in anymore, my whole body was trembling, my ears were flattened, tail between legs, just every sign of submission.

"Please, don't hurt me! I, I, I promise I won't do it again, whatever I had done, but you know what I mean, just please don't hurt me!".

The white dog smiled a little and said in a soft voice "Don't worry pup I won't hurt you, My name is Dogo, what about you?".

"Ummmmm mines Ace" I responded, unsure of what was happening.

"Ace, that's a nice name".

"Thanks" I said awkwardly. We stood there in silence for a few moments before Dogo spoke up "Hey ummm, you must be pretty tired and confused from what has happened probably? Do you want to rest for a little bit?" You can come over to my cage if you want, there's plenty of room over here.".

"Ummmm exactly how am I suppose to get over there? We're kind of in cages if you know what I mean?".

"Ohhhhh don't worry leave that to me." Dogo walked to the corner that touched both of our cages and I realized the metal was a little loose. He grabbed the cage fence with his jaw and lifted it up so I had enough room to get through. Surprisingly my chain let me go far enough underneath it and Dogo's chain had let him lay down in the corner, so I wasn't too cold or uncomfortable.

Dogo had curled up next to me, or I should say I curled up next to him, and I asked him "Dogo, do we ever get out of here?" I looked up hopefully.

Dogo stared down and smiled yet uncertain and spoke "That is a question for tomorrow. Now go to sleep".

I was disappointed but too tired too argue, "alright night Dogo".

"Good night Ace". And I drifted off into sleep.
