Chapter 3: Touch

"Just by your touch you make me forget the rest of the world."

                                                                           -Anonymous

Your blue eyes were wide as you stared down the man in front of you, heart pounding in your chest as you slowly pulled your bound hands away from him, body inching backwards, struggling to put distance between the two of you.

Jin's eyes widened at your movement, his head shaking as his hands shot out to grab you.

"N-No. Wait!" He pleaded, hazy, blue eyes scanning over your face.

You managed to slip from his grasp and stand up, hands raising in front of you defensively as you stepped backwards.

Jin followed suit, standing to his feet. His hands reached out for you, desperately trying to touch you again...desperately trying to feel something.

"Please, you don't understand. "He begged. "I've been so lonely."

"W-Why don't you have a heartbeat?" You asked breathlessly. "What are you?"

He shook his head at your questions, advancing towards you quickly. You shot into panic mode, instantly dodging him, your body jumping out of the way just in time to avoid touching his body with yours.

"Stop it!" Jin shouted pleadingly. "Stop running away from me. Let me touch you..."

Ignoring the way his words came off sounding, you shook your head, pointing an accusing finger at him.

"Answer my question!" You demanded in a panicked tone, chest heaving.

Jin ran a hand through his white hair, eyes bouncing all around him as he struggled to maintain whatever remaining composure he had.

"I-I'm a spirit." He stated, eyes hesitantly raising to meet yours.

You froze in your place, gaze never leaving his as your breath caught in your throat.

A spirit.

He was a ghost.

Oh dear god, as if you didn't already have enough drama to deal with.

Maybe it was just a prank! Maybe the Seokjin in this world was just a really good prankster who liked to pull people's leg! There was no such things as ghosts and if there were....you would not be able to see them.

"Oh no." You breathed, taking a step backwards."Oh no, no, no, no, no."

Jin's expression fell at your response, taking a step closer to you.

You eyes shot to his instantly at his movement, expression hardening into a warning glare as you pointed at him.

"Stay away from me." You said quietly. "I- I can't deal with this right now."

The white-haired spirit's eyes widened as you turned on your heel, walking away from him at a fast pace.

He began to panic, fear settling over him once again as he watched your retreating figure begin to leave him alone again.

All alone.

That's all he had ever been for as long as he could remember.

Alone and hopeless as he watched the people around him obliviously live their lives in happiness, never once sparing a second thought to the cold chill that lingered in the air when they walked straight through him, or the longing looks he gave as he watched them embrace each other and laugh with each other.

He didn't know how long he had been there. Confined to the grounds of the Jeon Palace. He had no idea how long he had been pretending to have conversations with people....All he knew was that he was all alone and it was beginning to drive him crazy....and the worst part is...he's dead...there was nowhere else he could go....nothing else he could do except wander around aimlessly as the days went on.

He would always try and find a way of making some kind of contact with the people around him and sometimes, if he was strong enough, he could move a piece of paper or blow out a candle...but every time he attempted any physical contact....all he felt was empty space....Cold, empty space.

But when he touched you...he felt you.

And when you looked directly at him and spoke with him....his heart would not stop jumping...even if it wasn't beating.

You were the only one that he could speak to, the only one he could touch....and now you were saying that you wanted nothing to do with him....now you were walking away.

He could not accept that.

"W-Wait!"

For a moment, he feared that he had gone mad in his time of desperate need for human contact and that he had imagined the entire thing, but the way you sped up as soon as he spoke confirmed that it was real and that he had not gone crazy...even though he was pretty sure ghosts couldn't go crazy anyway.

You shook your head fervently, trying to ignore the sounds of his feet running to you and his long, silk robes flowing behind him.

You sped up, eyes searching for another human that could pull you out of whatever insane mirage you were currently in.

Jin finally managed to catch up with you, struggling to keep up with your face-paced walk.

"Wh-What is your name?" He asked breathlessly.

You ignored him, raising your hands to the side of your face, to block the view of him from your peripheral vision.

"It's not real, Y/n. It's not real." You chanted.

"So your name is Y/n?" He asked. "That is an odd name, but I shall do my best to ingrain it into my memory, since you are the first human I have met in all my time as a spirit."

Your heart beat up to a quick pace.

Crap, now he knew your name. Nice going, Y/n.

You continued to remain silent, desperately searching for someone, anyone who could save you from the man that walked beside you.

"There you are!"

You froze, shoulder's dropping at the familiar voice.

Anyone but him.

Jimin's glare was hard on your back as he stomped his way towards you, nostrils flaring angrily as he clenched his jaw, brown eyes piercing your small figure.

"Oh," Jin sighed in annoyance. "I wonder what he's mad about now."

Still deciding to ignore the spirit, you walked towards Jimin, trying to as much distance as possible between you and the white-haired man, but of course, Jin didn't take the hint, instead opting to follow directly behind you.

Jimin's hand gripped your arm harshly, squeezing it so tightly that you were sure to have a bruise the next morning. His dark brown gaze seared through you as his chest heaved with unkempt anger, his nose still bloody from your last encounter.

"I should have you beaten!" He roared furiously. "Do you know what the penalty is for assaulting a royal guard!?"

"No, and I don't care." You deadpanned, motioning over to Seokjin with your hands, eyes remaining on him as you whispered to Jimin. "Can you see him?"

"You do not care?!" Jimin repeated, obviously ignoring your question. "You are not above anyone else! I-"

"Shut up." You said blankly, eyes still staying on Jin, watching as he offered you a small wave of acknowledgement. "You can yell at me later...but for now just shut up."

Jimin's eye grew wide with rage at your words, but he remained silent, clenching his fists.

"Why can't he see you?" You asked, hands becoming shaky.

Jin sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair.

"None of them can." He stated, eyes slowly falling onto your restrained wrists. "Only you can see me, only you can hear me...only you can....touch me."

You swallowed hard, reaching your hands up to test the theory.

You hesitantly placed your hands on his face, almost gasping as the cold of his skin melted away under the heat from your hands. You cupped his cheeks delicately, fearing that he may break beneath your fingertips.

Seokjin let out a euphoric sigh at the warmth you brought him, the feeling of your skin on his own pushed back to coldness that he had grown accustomed to and replaced it with warmth..

His hands moved up to rest over your own, eyes fluttering shut and shedding happy tears as he felt you....really felt you.

"You-" You choked on your own words as you blinked wide-eyed at the feeling of his skin on your own. "You really can't see him?"

You turned your attention back to the red-head who watched you with a weirded-out expression.

Jimin scoffed, his eyes returning back to the cold, indifferent ones you were beginning to grow accustomed to.

"Oh, you are a jester, are you?" He asked sarcastically, grabbing the rope that hung from your wrists and pulling on it harshly, causing your hands to leave Jin's face abruptly.

The spirit's eyes snapped open at the loss of your warmth, hid body instinctively moving towards your own as his hands reached out to touch you again.

You grunted angrily as Jimin pulled you back into the palace of paper and wood, the rope mercilessly tugging at your skin.

"I'm not joking!" You shouted, glancing back at Jin, who stopped walking as the two of you entered the palace, his eyes wide and full of worry for his one and only friend. "He's right there!"

Jimin merely rolled his eyes in response, tugging on the rope harsher.

"Enough of your lies, Oracle!" He ordered. "You have taken advantage of my patience long enough."

"But, I-"

"Silence!" He stopped in his tracks, turning to send you a hard glare, his voice dropping to a dangerously low octave. "You have not even been around for a day and you have already made me despise you, so if I were you...I would watch my step and hope to god that I don't mess up

Because if you make a fool of me to The Emperor...

I will kill you."
