Chapter 11
I pulled my hood onto my head, taking a deep breath and walking across the street with Jeff at my side. It was so strange being out in the open, exposed to anyone and everyone.
Jeff covered up his sliced smile and all I could do was keep my head down. I was afraid someone was going to recognize me but no one even spared me a glance.
Jeff gestured to the side of the store, and I followed him to the back. I could barely hear myself think over everyone's chitter chatter.
"I'm going to go in and take a few things. You stay here and don't do anything." Jeff ordered quietly, then he opened the door to the back and disappeared inside.
I rolled my eyes, leaning against the wall. He always got to have the fun. But I knew it would probably be harder for us both to go inside without being recognized. We were considered partners in crime around the city, you could see our names literally everywhere.
After awhile I began getting bored. I glanced at the door one last time to see if it would open before hurrying out into the crowd again.
You can't blame me, though. I was going to be fine, he acted like I was a mischievous child and that I couldn't do anything without him.
I was pushed around quite a bit by everyone, and I knew that if I still had claustrophobia I would have suffocated.
I lifted my head to look around, beginning to enjoy the feeling of being normal. I mean, I knew I wasn't normal but it was the closest feeling to it as I had ever gotten.
People hurried to work and talked about normal people stuff. Some argued over the phone and others even held hands and acted all lovey-dovey.
I envied them all. Even the ones with children who couldn't help but touch and destroy everything in their path.
They all seemed happy. Even when they were irritated they still had a glint of life in their eyes. I sighed, looking into a few store windows out of curiosity.
After a little while of this I knew I had to get back. Jeff was probably looking for me, anyway.
I caught a glimpse of him in the crowd as I hurried back. He spotted me as well and his eyes lit up with annoyance. He vigorously waved me over, but tried to look normal and fly beneath the radar.
I pushed through the crowd, shoving people out of my way and squeezing through small gaps. A few people cursed me but I just snickered.
"Watch where you're going!" a woman gasped as I smacked right into her. I wasn't looking where I was going. I looked up, and immediately I felt the world around me freeze.
"M-mom?"
