Chapter 7: Falling in Love

Jasper's POV

Spending so much time with my love has been such a blessing from heaven. For centuries, I believed I was damned forever to be with Maria as the monster she made me. When I found Alice after I escaped with Peter and his mate, Charlotte, I found a family of my own. But, it never felt enough. Even the nights I spent with Alice never filled me. Never satisfied me. Now...I feel complete with Katherine. But, why must fate be so cruel? I want to be with her forever, but forever meant killing her and turning her into something like me...a monster.

After our little rain dance, I made sure she made it home, safe and sound. I caught her shivering as I drove, so I kept the heater on high enough to make sure she was warm enough. It would kill me if she became sick because of me. I took her out there in the woods, I let her dance in the rain. I want nothing to happen to her. As night fell, here I was, standing at my balcony, looking out into the distance. Seeing if I could see her house from where I was. But, she was too far. It was starting to hurt being so far apart from her.

I turn as I begin to sense a presence behind me. Carlisle.

"What's troubling you, my son?" He asks.

I sigh deeply and turn back into the distance, "When you discovered Esme was your mate, how did you make the decision to turn her?"

I start to feel the distress rolling off of Carlisle, the memories of that day still haunted him, yet comforted him at the same time. Finding his mate was the best and worst time of his life.

He sighs softly and moves to stand next to me, "When I found Esme, I knew I couldn't be without her. I didn't want to turn her, but I didn't have a choice. The bond with us was so strong, it hurt watching her suffer in that hospital bed. She didn't have long either way. She wanted to die, but I couldn't let her go. I love her so much."

I feel him pat my shoulder, "You have the choice, Jasper. Let her live, like a human, or like you. But, whatever choice you make, make sure you agree with it. Don't make a choice so soon. Take time and talk to her about it."

I sigh and look at him, nodding in agreement.

"Why not go see her? I can see you want to." He adds. "Besides, it's your...what? Fourth date night?

I give him a crooked smile and laugh, he was right again. I sigh and jump on the ledge of the balcony.

"Actually, it's been six Saturday nights of dates." I smirk and take off in vampire speed to my car and head off to see Katherine.

Katherine's POV

It's been over a month, and dating Jasper Hale has been such a dream. I can't describe this feeling I have for him. The bond that holds us together is so incredibly strong. It hurt so much to be separated from him every day. But, nights, when he sneaks into my room and lies next to me, it makes it better. I know he thinks I don't know that he is there, but I always know. After the dance we shared in the rain, the next day at school, I talked to Bella. She was happy that I knew and that she had someone to share the secrets with. Me and Dax. But, If only she knew about our secret. In time.

My head snaps to the window as I hear the warning from Earth that someone was coming. Jasper. I smile and head downstairs to wait for the bell. Mother answered the door for me and welcomed Jasper back.

"Jasper, it's so good to see you again." She smiles warmly at him.

"It's a pleasure always to be here, Helena." He smiles back at her, then turns to see me. I watch his Adam's apple bob up and down as he swallowed hard. I blush and look down shyly.

"Ah, hello, Jasper." Father appears from behind the corner that separated the living room and kitchen.

"Good evening, sir." Jasper begins to stiffen and stands up straight.

"Oh, yes, date night again." Father smirks.

Jasper nods, "Yes, sir."

"Well, we should be going." I say to break up the intense showdown between Father and Jasper.

"Yes, you two should be." Mother smiles at the two of us, while Father just gives a small smile. Fake. Even though I'm not his daughter, he treats me like I am.

"What exactly is the plan for tonight?" Father asks.

"Well, I plan to take her out to dinner, then maybe to a movie of her choice..and..." Suddenly, Mother cuts him off.

"Now, Greg, you're scaring the poor boy. Quit being such a sourwolf." She frowns at him, but winks at us. "You two go and have a good time. Text me to let me know when you're coming home."

I smile at her, "Thanks, mom. Night, Father." I call out as Jasper and I head to the car. Jasper, as always being the gentleman, he opens my door for me and helps me in, then goes around and gets into the driver's side. I giggle and wave to Mother and Father as we take off to our date.

"Is your dad always that intense? He keeps looking at me like he wants to kill something." Jasper says.

I laugh at his scared face. He, a big bad vampire, was scared of Father. Well, if only he knew, but he only sees him as a simple human.

"Father can be intense. Especially when to comes to his children, but, don't worry. You keep me happy, that's all that matters to him. He likes you. If he didn't, Father would probably do all he could to keep us from dating." I laugh.

Jasper lets out a breath of relief, "Glad to know that. To be away from you." He stops and reaches to take my hand into his, intertwining our fingers together. " I don't think I could go on living." He says with a serious tone in his voice.

My heart literally flips in my chest. The idea of losing Jasper, at all, for any reason, I don't think I could bear it.

Wasn't long till we arrived at a small restaurant. Thankfully, not many were here, so that meant an easy night for Jasper. I hope.

After the appetizer, a female waitress comes to pick up my plate and set down the main course. Which was Leek soup.

I frown when she seductively looks at Jasper who only had eyes for me. I eye her up and down. She was young, maybe like 24 with brown hair rolled up in a bun. Heavy make-up. Can't she see we're on a date?

"So, are you sure you don't want anything?" She purrs at him.

I laugh softly when he still wouldn't look at her, but he sends her a quickly polite smile, "No, thank you."

She turns and rolls her eyes at me, but smiles at him, "Please, let me know if you change your mind." And she leaves.

I scoff, "Does that happen everywhere you go?" I ask as I stir the soup with my spoon.

He laughs softly, "Very quite often, but none of the women around here could compel me to stray away from you." He smirks.

I blush and take a sip of my delicious soup, "Smooth." I laugh. "Have you ever...hmm...had other other girlfriends?" I hint, meaning vampire girlfriends.

He sighs, "I had one whom I wish I never met. I'll tell you about her soon. After her, I never had anyone else. Till I met Alice. She knew I was coming." He laughs softly. "I met her in a diner back in the 40s. 'You kept me waiting long enough.' she said. And the gentleman that I was...am...simply said, 'My apologies, ma'am.' If it wasn't for her, I don't think I would ever find such a peaceful coven and learn a better way to live like this. Or find you." He says.

I smile softly at him and shiver as he reaches up to caress my cheek. He leans in close and kisses my lips softly. I kiss him back and...it felt like we were the only ones existing. Nothing mattered. The sparks dancing on my lips, I cherish that feeling every time we kiss. We slowly pull away, breaking the kiss and simply stare into each others eyes.

After dinner, Jasper paid for the meal and the same waitress slipped her number on to the receipt and smirks at me. But, I laugh when Jasper ripped away her number and threw it away as we were leaving. I swear, I thought I saw smoke coming from that woman's ears.

Jasper's POV

Walking hand in hand with my mate, it was such a wonderful feeling. I drove the two of us to the woods where I told her about my true identity. From there, we just walked through the woods. I made sure we stayed far from the Quileute Territory. I found us a grass spot, dry, and laid out a blanket for Kat to rest on. As we lay against the blanket, we couldn't take our eyes off of each other. No words could be said. Just being near each other was enough said. I take her hand back into mind and intertwine my fingers with hers. Holding her. I never want this moment to end.

"Tell me about your life. You have heard almost everything about me. I want to know more about you." I say softly.

Kat sighs, "There's not much to talk about. I was born California. L.A. area. When I was 10, we started to move around. First place was Nevada, then North Dakota, and then, Texas."

I smile big, "I was born in Texas."

"Really?"

I nod, "1844 to be exact."

Her eyes widen in surprise, "Wow. Um, when did you turn?"

My smile dropped a little, "I was turned in 1863. I was part of the the Confederate Army before I turned 17, using my way of persuasion." I smirked a little.

I watch her turn on her side to lean on her elbow, "You were in the Confederate Army?" She asks, shock lit in her voice.

I get up to my feet and tip an invisible hat, bowing a little, "Major Jasper Whitlock, at your service, Ma'am." I smile and get back to lying next to her.

"You? A major?" She laughs at my gesture.

I smirk with pride, "In the following 2 years of being in the army, I was promoted to major in the army and became the youngest major in Texas." I stop to sigh, "After evacuating women and children, I rode on my way back to Galveston and met...three vampires." My smile was completely gone. "My creator...Maria." I sneered at that name.

I watch Katherine frown at my tone.

"Maria, Lucy and Nettie. Maria was a beautiful Hispanic woman. Dark brown hair, blood red eyes. When vampires feast on human blood, their eyes become blood red. It makes it easy for us to spot who are human drinkers and who are vegetarians. My family and I are vegetarians, hence, the golden eyes. When our thirst takes over, our eyes turn pitch black." I explain. "Maria was a human drinker. And her lust for blood was almost as strong as her restrain to turn someone."

"Her seductions were something I couldn't resist. Even, after I became a vampire. The three of them had recently lost their respective territories to other covens. Maria knew from my suit that I was in the military and changed me into a vampire in hopes of utilizing my training and experience to create an efficient army." I feel Katherine reaching out to take my hand, holding it, giving me comfort. "With the help of the other newborns, Maria reclaim her territory and later claim dominance over others. Nettie and Lucy gained territories of their own, but when they tried to rebel against Maria, I sensed their malevolent emotions and teamed up with Maria to kill them. Maria and I shared a short romantic relationship, but she never got over her deceased mate. I could feel it. With my abilities, they became useful in controlling the younger newborns. It didn't matter what age, Maria wanted them all." I said with disgust. "It took a while for me to realize that she never loved me. I was her puppet and she pulled my strings."

"I commanded Maria's newborn army that participated in the Southern vampire wars. Since Maria wouldn't keep vampires after the first year of their transformations...." I became hesitant with my answer. "I was responsible for disposing of them."

The memories of the pain I felt when I killed the newborns began to haunt my mind, "Overtime, the pain and cruelty of such existence depressed me to no end. While in the army, I befriended a newborn named Peter, whom I persuaded Maria to keep because of his advanced combat skills and kindred spirit. But, he met his mate. Another newborn. Maria wanted me to kill her. Maria saw mates as a weakness in her army. None of her newborns need the distraction. But I refused. So, I let them go. After that, Maria's feelings for me changed. I could sense how fearful, and somewhat mistrustful, she was towards me, and I knew that she would plot a way to destroy me. So I began planning how to destroy her first, despite my reluctance to the idea of destroying the one person who mattered to me, but my years in the coven had affected me so deeply that I almost became a savage." I snarl softly.

"In 1938, Peter came back and told me about the way vampires could coexist up North. I immediately left Maria and her coven to join Peter and Charlotte. However, I did not find peace, since I could still feel the emotions of my human victims, which deeply depressed me more. Eventually, I left Charlotte and Peter. I tried to kill less often, but the thirst always grew overwhelming. In 1948, I ran into a diner in Philadelphia and met Alice Cullen. And from there, I learned how to live off the blood of animals." I ended my story and watch Katherine's reactions.

I stiffen a little as she moves to lie in my arms, but I wrap them around her body and hold her close to me, breathing in her scent.

"That's in the past now. What matters is the person you've become. Everyone has a dark past, it only depends on if you decide to escape it." She says softly.

I shake my head slowly, looking down at her in awe, "I don't deserve you. You're such a kind, caring person." I say, softly. Even after I tell her about my past, she still welcomes me in open arms.

Katherine raises her head from my chest and looks into my eyes, "You put so little effort in yourself. You're much more than that. Everything about you, I love and care for." If I had a heartbeat, this is where it would stop.

She blushes when she realizes what she said.

I sigh and hold her in my arms, "I love you, Katherine. I love more than anything in my years of existence."

She gives me such a beautiful smile, I just wanted to keep her smiling like that forever.

"I love you too, Jasper. So very much."

How can such words cause so much emotions for one being?

Throughout the entire night, we shared stories about our lives, learning about each other. Till Katherine fell asleep in my arms. We stayed there, lying in the grass till the sun came up. It was such a peaceful, perfect moment, to watch Katherine sleep in my arms.

I look up and see the sun rising and breaking it's rays through the trees. It hits my skin, causing my entire body to light up like diamonds. I never told her why my family and I don't come out in the sun. Now, I guess I have to.

Katherine's POV

Groaning softly, I wince as a bright light wakes me from my slumber. Squinting my eyes as I awaken, I look and see the sun rising. But, that wasn't what woke me. I gasp softly as I see a hand reach push my hair out of my face. A hand shinning like diamonds in the light. It was Jasper. I look up at his face, seeing it sparkle. He was even more beautiful. I reach up to stroke a cheek, it still felt the same. Cold and soft. He's perfect. Without a word, he gets to his feet and pulls me up to stand. He gathers the blanket and we walk back to the car. Thankfully, the sun kept me warm, it was chilly, but Jasper kept me warm as well through the night. I barely noticed his jacket covering me when I woke up. God, he's such a sweetheart. I am unconditionally in love with Jasper Hale.

During the drive home, I texted Mother to let her know everything. Jasper was a worried she would be mad, but I assured him that Mother wasn't and she still trusts him. Jasper couldn't stop smiling. I love watching him smile. As he dropped me off and walked me to the door, he pulls me closer, giving me a kiss goodnight, or good morning, and left. My smile never left my face as I walk up the stairs, passing by Mother, Father, and Dax. Dax had a weird, confusing look as Mother was just smiling away. Father sighs and rolls his eyes.

"Kids." He sighs and goes back to his bookshelf.

I walk up to my room and shut the door, throwing myself on the bed. I haven't felt like this in my entire life and after death. No one like Jasper has ever made me this happy. I smile big and sigh deeply as I fall into a deep slumber.

(Kat's outfit for the day)

A week has passed and it was beginning to warm up a little bit, but still continued to rain a few times. As I head outside, I see Bella washing her truck. I pace over to see if she wanted any help. I slip off my sweater to prevent it from getting wet and only wore my tank top.

"It's still a bit cool out. You sure you don't want a jacket?" Bella asks as she frowns at how I'm not cold.

I shrug, "Nah, I'm ok." I smile and begin to help her with her truck.

"So, how are you and Jasper doing?" She asks as she scrubs her truck.

My smile begins to grow, "We're wonderful. It still amazes me that I found such a great guy."

Bella gives me a small smile.

"What about you and Edward? Hmm?" I clicked my tongue, pulling my sunglasses down to my nose and wiggled my brows knowingly.

She laughs and shakes her head, I could see a hint of red rush to her pale cheeks, "We're good. It's still new for me. I mean, we're dating...vampires. Not something you hear from girls like us." She scoffs a little.

"We're unique. And think about, every girl always wanted a man who is old fashioned with dating. Men today, it's like. 'Girl, come on, open those legs and let me in'." I scoff and rolled my eyes, earning a disgusted sound from Bella.

"True. Disgusting how men are today. Very few are gentlemen like ours." Bella sighs.

I stop and put the extra sponge down and lean on the truck, "Not many women are lucky." I sigh and start to think about Connor. "Bella, did you have boyfriends when you were living in Phoenix?" I ask.

Bella stops and looks at me, a little taken back with my question, "Well, a few, but it never lasted and it wasn't as intense it is with Edward." She stutters a little.

I fold my arms over my chest and look out at the houses around.

"What about you?" Bella stops scrubbing the truck and frowns at me in curiously.

I was hesitant, but I decided to tell her a little about Connor, "I met a guy once. Connor was his name." I swallow a hard lump at that name. "I thought he was my knight in shinning armor. But, he was far from being a knight. A few years after we dated, I noticed that he was changing. Then, all he started to care about was sex, drugs, money. He joined a gang and..." I stop to shiver in disgust. I look over to Bella with pleading eyes, "Bella, promise you won't tell Jasper this. Or Edward. I want to be the one to tell him when the time is right."

She was confused, but she nodded, "Ok, I promise."

I sigh and continue my story, "Connor came over one night. He was...drunk as a skunk and higher than the sky. Mom and Dad weren't home and Dax was at a friends. I shouldn't have let him in." I start to hug myself. I couldn't tell her the whole truth. But, I think she got the idea, because her face, suddenly, showed nothing but anger.

"Did he hurt you?"

I couldn't get a word out, all I could do was stutter my words, "He...he...he held me down. I couldn't do anything." I whimpered.

Bella gasps softly, "Did you tell your parents? The police?"

"Mom and Dad, but, we didn't go to the police. I couldn't. The gang he was a part of owned the police. But, it doesn't matter anymore." My face hardens with little emotion. "A year later, Connor was found murdered. Either way, justice was served."

Bella sighs and swallows hard, "Kat, I'm really sorry that happened."

I waved her off, "Everyone has a dark past. It only matters how you handle it. I keep it in the past and focus on the present. It keeps me sane." I go back to scrubbing.

I could sense Bella's pity for me, but she kept herself quiet, I guess for my sake. I wish I could tell her more, but it's too risky.

Suddenly, a loud thud startles us and the truck is jerked around. I look up and see Edward on top of the truck. He moves to jump off the truck.

"Edward, you scared the crap out of us!" I exclaim.

"Can you act human? I mean, I've got neighbors. Besides, Kat and Dax." Bella scoffs at him.

Edward ignores that comment, "I'm gonna take you to my place tomorrow. You, Kat, and Dax." He says then moves to pull the dent out of Bella's truck.

"Thanks..." Bella mutters.

I begin to stutter, "Wait, with your family? The whole family?" I ask.

"Yeah." Edward nods at me and then points over to his Volvo, "Jasper's in the car. He, well," He looks over to Bella, "Your scent is a little hard for him to ignore. He wants to keep his distance." Edward says gently to Bella.

"Oh." She mutters and blushes. "What if they don't like me?" She asks.

I drown out their conversation as I walk over to Edward's car.

"So you're worried...Not because you'll be in a house full of vampires but...Because you think they won't approve of you?"

Bella scoffs, "I'm glad I amuse you..."

I walk over to Jasper's side and see him looking up at me, smiling.

He rolls down the window and I lean down to rest my arms on the door, "So, I'm invited to meet the family?" I laugh.

He chuckles, "Carlisle and Esme are anxious to meet you. The mates of their children. It was bound to happen sooner or later."

I giggle, "True. Now, I'm nervous."

He frowns in confusion, "Why? I won't let anyone hurt you."

"I mean like what Bella is worried about...would they like me?" I scrunch my face up in embarrassment.

Jasper lets out a loud laugh, "So, you're worried they might not approve. Instead of the fact, you'll be walking into a vampire's den?"

"Ha ha ha." I mocked him with a silly face. "I'm serious. I'm not worried about the fact your family are vampires. Besides, my scent isn't intoxicating like Bella's. I don't have much to worry about, right?"

Jasper was hesitant, but he nods, "Right."

"And I trust you, Jasper." I say softly.

He smiles lovingly and pulls me closer for a soft kiss.

Suddenly, he breaks the kiss quickly and snaps his head towards the road, "Jasper?" I frown in confusion and hear Bella talking to Edward.

"What is it?" She asks.

"A complication." I could see how uneasy Edward felt and Jasper was on high alert.

"We'll pick you up tomorrow. Ok?" Jasper turns to me.

I nod and give him a small smile. Edward paces over to his car and gives me an apologetic look before getting inside and starting his car. I move away to let him drive off, but I see a truck coming up the hill. It was the Blacks. I frown in curiosity as I see Billy Black glare at Edward and Jasper as they glare back at him.

Bella walks over to greet them with a friendly smile, "Hey! Come to visit your truck?" She teases.

"Looks good...Got that dent out..." Jacob notices.

"Yeah." Bella stutters.

"Actually, we came to visit your flat-screen. First Mariners game of the season." Billy smirks and nods over at Jacob, "Plus, Jacob here keeps bugging me about seeing you again."

Jacob begins to blush and awkwardly stands next to his dad, "Great, dad... Thanks." He mutters.

"Just keeping it real, son." Billy chuckles.

Charlie pulls up into the drive yard not too soon, carrying two six packs of beer, "Vitamin R. Pale Ale." He smirks.

"Well done, Chief..." Billy holds up a couple of greasy brown bags. I could smell fish. "Harry Clearwater's homemade fish fry." Charlie and Billy were practically drooling already.

"Good man." Charlie chuckles. "Would you like to join us, Kat? You won't regret it when you try Harry's Fish Fry." He persuades.

"Hmm, sure, why not?" I grab my sweater and pull it back over my head and follow them.

Charlie places the beer in Billy's lap and helps roll him into the house.

"Any luck with that Waylon case?" Billy asks.

Bella and I frown knowingly.

"Well, I don't think it was an animal that killed him." Charlie says as the painful loss of his friend filled his eyes.

"I never thought it was." Billy shakes his head.

Charlie turns to help him up the steps, "You spread the word out at the rez, huh? Keep the kids out of the woods."

Billy nods, "Will do." He suddenly looks up at me and Bella with a hard, serious look, "Don't want no one else getting hurt, do we?"

I frown down at him, Bella doesn't know, but I do. He was warning us. and I knew why.
