Chapter 9

"Focus. Your enemy will use any weakness or distraction against you" Chris said to Jessica as the two circled each other with some pretty good music playing in the background. (Song above)

Chris had recently been discharged from the infirmary, and as soon as she was, Chris wasted no time in jumping back into action when it came to training her students. But, since Jessica was improving much faster than her classmates, and wanting something more difficult, Chris had decided to do some private, one-on-one training with the girl.

Something Jessica was rather excited about. And honestly, Chris was amazed at the amount of progress the girl had made.

Then again, Jessica was a quick study, just like Chris. In fact, the only difference between the two were the weapon preferences.

Chris was more close range combat, hence the staff, daggers, and swords her staff could turn into. While Jessica liked distance between her and her opponent, drawing her more towards far-ranged weapons, like guns and bow and arrows.

She did have deadly precision, able to hit the center of a bullseye target from a few hundred meters away. But if someone were to sneak up on her, Jessica would have to learn how to fight close range.

And she was ready to learn.

Jessica made sure to not lose her focus on Chris, her eyes paying attention to the slightest of details. So she was ready when Chris suddenly lunged at her out of the blue.

The young girl threw herself out of the way, letting the battle trainer fly past her. Chris quickly caught herself and spun around, raising her staff just in time to block the knife blows Jessica had tried to land.

This continued, dodge, strike, repeat, until Jessica landed a hit that Chris wasn't prepared for, making her stumble a bit and put a hand on her cheek, which now sported a bleeding cut.

"Oh-oh my gods, Chris! I am so sorry!" Jessica quickly apologized.

"Don't be sorry! Its okay! Besides, is that what your going to say to your enemy every time you land a hit on them?" Chris replied, as she shook her head to clear it.

"Wha- hell no!" Jessica replied.

Chris nodded.

"Then treat me like I'm trying to kill you" she said, before rushing as fast as she could towards Jessica.

The two fought hard, until eventually, Jessica surprised Chris by swiping her feet out from underneath her, causing the trainer to fall. Jessica wasted no time in sitting on her stomach and pressing a knife tip against her throat.

The two stared at each other for a second before Chris cracked a smile.

"Nice work Jess" she said as Jessica got off of her, wearing a proud smile.

Chris stood and held up her hand, to which Jessica high-fived.

"Alright, go take a water break, we're done for today. Same time tomorrow, but this time, meet me out in the field" Chris told the girl.

Jessica nodded and headed for the bench, but on the way, she seemed distracted by something that was in the doorway to the gym.

"Oh! Hi Ink!" she said, prompting Chris to look over.

It was indeed Ink.

"Well, that was entertaining" he said, walking in.

"Oh really?" Chris asked as she walked over to a bench to pick up her cardigan jacket thing, which had fallen off after she tossed it over to the bench.

She stopped the music as Ink walked over. By now, Jessica had left the gym, but she was hanging out in the doorway.

With Chris's back turned as she fiddled with something on her cardigan jacket, Ink saw and took the chance to summon his giant paintbrush of a weapon. He silently snuck up behind Chris, who was still busy with her clothing garment.

He silently raised his brush, ready to slam it into Chris's side, but right as he swiped it, Chris glowed and disappeared. Ink stood there, confused, before realizing she had just teleported.

Hearing something behind him, Ink barely had enough time to move out of the way before the end of a metal staff slammed down on right where he was a second ago. Ink swiftly turned around to see Chris, who had a small smirk.

"Nice try, but your gonna have to do better than that" she said, bringing up her staff and spinning it a bit.

"Oh I'll show you better" Ink replied, getting into a battle stance.

He launched himself at Chris, who quickly retaliated. Both of them so focused on each other that they didn't notice they were drawing a small crowd at the doorway.

Dream walked by the gym, slightly confused as to why people were standing at the doorway. He somehow managed to make his way through so that he was standing beside Jessica.

"What's going on?" he asked in a whisper.

"Ink and Chris are going at it! And hard! Its awesome!" Jessica replied excitedly in the same volume, her eyes and head following the two fighters movements.

Dream looked over to see Chris and Ink sparring like there was no tomorrow. Chris had turned her staff into swords, and Ink, well, he was still fighting with his over-sized paintbrush.

Both fighters were panting hard as they continued to fight, the sweat rolling off of their bodies in little droplets. Ink brought his brush down on Chris, who blocked it with her swords.

She tried to get a hit on his side, but Ink blocked that with his over-sized brush. The two continued to fight until they were too tired to continue.

In fact, no they were just laying on the floor, Ink was on his back with his brush laying a couple feet from him. Chris was flat on her stomach with her staff in hand.

The two were panting hard.

"Hey, Ink?" Chris asked.

"Yeah?" Ink's tired reply reached her ears.

"Let's just, call this, a tie, yeah?" Chris suggested, holding up her pointer finger.

"...Sure" Ink said after a moment's hesitation.

"About time you two stopped for today"

"You guys fought for almost three hours!"

Dream's and Jessica's voices floated over to the two fighters, who looked over to see their audience, who were now starting to disperse now that Ink and Chris had stopped fighting.

"You guys okay?" Jessica asked.

"Ask us again in an hour, then we'll tell you" Chris replied, Ink grunting a bit in agreement.

Dream and Jessica nodded and left, leaving the two fighters to rest for a bit...
