Chapter 8

The sound of the heart monitor's rhythmic beeps and the sound of slow, steady breathing filled the infirmary room. Ink stared down at the floor.

He was sitting in a chair beside the bed Chris laid on, and Dream was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Chris had an oxygen mask on and IVs in her arms. Both skeletons had an unreadable expression on their faces.

That changed when a doctor came in, holding a clipboard. Both skeletons looked over and Dream got off the wall.

Ink remained sitting.

"How is she?" Dream asked.

The doctor let out a sigh as they looked over the paperwork.

"To say she's very lucky to be alive would be one hell of an understatement. Had someone showed up even thirty minutes after she passed out, it would have been too late. I am rather surprised that she even managed to survive this long. Wolf-Black widow venom is not a joke" they said.

"How long do you think it'll take for her to recover?" Ink asked.

"Hard to tell. This kind of venom affects humans differently than it does monsters. Its definitely going to take a couple weeks at least. And at most, a couple months. So, she's going to be out of action for a while. And since her vitals are on the weak side, we've put her on a 24/7 watch. We are so lucky we got a fresh supply of anti-venom" the doctor replied.

"What does the 24/7 watch thing mean?" Dream asked.

"It means that we're going to have someone in the room with her to make sure she doesn't flat-line. And if she does, then the person will alert us so that we can bring her back" the doctor explained.

"I would like to take first watch" Ink said suddenly.

Dream and the doctor looked at him.

"Ink, are you sure?" Dream asked.

Ink nodded.

"Alright then, I'll put you down for today. But you can only volunteer twice a week, and you can't do it in a row" the doctor warned as they wrote on the clipboard.

Ink nodded again.

"Good night Ink" Dream said to his right hand, who returned the words, before turning around and following the doctor out of the room.

Ink sighed as he glanced over at Chris.

"What the hell are you doing to me?" he asked her.

Only silence answered him...

-time skip-

It had been a couple weeks since Chris had been brought into the infirmary, and she was finally showing signs of recovery. The anti-venom had taken a little while to take effect, but it was working.

Chris wasn't awake yet, but her body and vital signs were showing signs of improvement. It was enough that she was taken off of the 24/7 watch.

Now that he knew she was going to be alright, Ink fully got back to his duties. Though any free time he had was spent by visiting Chris.

And now was one of his free time moments. One of the nurses who were taking care of Chris noticed him walk in, and went over to him.

"Your in luck today. Chris woke up about an hour ago. Dream's already visiting her" they said.

"T-that's great!" Ink replied, though he felt weird.

How long had Dream been there?

The nurse, oblivious to Ink's sudden silence, nodded excitedly in agreement before walking off, leaving Ink to make his way to Chris's room. Sure enough, there was Chris.

She was propped up on her pillow with a bookmarked book in her lap and talking to Dream, who was standing at her bedside. Ink walked in in time to catch a bit of their conversation.

"-had us all worried. Some more than others" Dream was saying.

"Oh really?" Chris asked.

Before Dream could answer, Ink alerted them to his presence by clearing his non-existent throat.

"Oh! Hello Ink" Dream greeted.

Ink nodded at him before looking over at Chris.

"Well, look who decided to finally wake up" he said, crossing his arms and leaning against the doorway.

"Yeah yeah" Chris replied, looking away in an almost shy manner.

Ink could see a very light pink dust her cheeks a bit.

"So, how are you feeling?" Ink asked.

"Tired, most the most part. But, happy to be alive" Chris replied, looking back at him.

Dream smiled a bit.

"I'll leave the two of you alone. I have some things I need to take care of" he said, before walking out of the room.

There was a couple moments of awkward silence before Chris decided to break it.

"...Thanks" she said.

"For what?" Ink replied.

"For, saving me when I crashed in my room" Chris replied, the dusting on her cheeks steadily becoming brighter.

It took Ink a moment to realize what she was talking about.

"O-oh! Right, um, your welcome" he said, his cheeks heating up enough so that he was blushing a bit.

When he and Jessica had gone int Chris's room to get her to the infirmary, they had both been terrified to see her laying on the floor unconscious with blood slowly spilling out of her mouth and not even breathing. Jessica had called for help while Ink did CPR to bring Chris back to life.

"How, did you find that out?" Ink asked.

"Jessica, she came in a just a couple minutes after I woke up. It took her thirty minutes to bring me up to date with all that happened while I was out" Chris explained.

Ink nodded, still blushing. "Well, I'll leave you to your story that you have" he said.

Chris smiled a bit.

"Thanks. See ya around. Since I'm not going anywhere" she said.

Ink chuckled a bit before turning around and walking out...
