Chapter 22

Ink panted as he pressed his back against the boulder-like piece of metal and concrete, slowly forcing it to move. But his efforts alone weren't enough.

Thank god there were a lot of volunteers who came to help after the news of the building collapsing spread through the city. A couple volunteers came over, and with their added strength, Ink was able to move the debris out of the way.

He thanked them, but found he had to sit down for a minute before he fainted from the sheer exhaustion.

"Ink, come on. You have to take a break" said Samantha, who had been working not too far away from him.

"No, not until I find her" Ink replied, casting a glance over all of the debris that was still around them.

Samantha kept her gaze on Ink.

"Do you really think you'll help Chris if you work yourself to death first?" she asked.

Ink stayed silent. He hated admitting it, but he knew Samantha was right.

He wouldn't be much help if he over-worked himself. He looked up to see Samantha had put out a hand.

After a moment's hesitation, he took it.

Meanwhile, Chris slowly blinked away, her vision doubled and blurry and her mind muddled. At the moment, the only thing she was able to comprehend was the darkness she was in along with the pressure on her back and left leg.

Pressure that seemed to be getting worse, and painful.

"H-hell-l-lo?" she tried to call, but her voice came out as a raspy whisper that burned and strained her throat.

Tears began to fall from the total body pain that she was slowly becoming aware of, some areas being much worse then the others. It also felt like she was slowly suffocating from how hard it was to breathe, not to mention that every breath she managed to take was shaky, ragged, and accompanied by sharp pains in her back and chest.

Chris moved her hand to wipe at the corner of her mouth, since there was a warm, tickling sensation that had been moving from her mouth down her chin. There was the same sensation pooling underneath her torso and it was even travelling up her left lower leg and around her thigh.

She tried to move herself a bit, only to cry out as sharp pains instantly traveled around her entire body. Her tears fell a bit faster as the new pain added to what she was already feeling.

The tickling sensation was back at her mouth, but this time, Chris didn't even bother to wipe it away.

"H-h-he-elp, p-ple-ease" she cried softly, not getting an answer.

Chris sniffed a bit and let out a shaky breath as she closed her eyes, making a few tears leak out. Though she opened them again as she thought she spotted something.

Summoning what little energy she had left, she collected it into a small, glowing green orb that floated in her hand. Using the light she had, Chris was able to spot a whistle.

It was her emergency whistle that she always kept in her back pocket to use in situations just like this. Chris transferred the orb to her other hand and tried to reach for the little device.

Though she quickly recoiled as the sharp pains came back. Chris reached out again and clenched her jaw as the pain worsened.

It was starting to get even harder to breathe, but Chris kept pushing herself. Small whimpers and cries of pain left her as she strained herself.

Come on, come on!, she thought to herself as more tears slipped out of her eyes.

After what seemed like forever, Chris felt her fingers close around the small object. She now recoiled, tightly gripping the whistle as her body was racked by severe pain.

She panted and softly cried, bending her arm and letting her tears fall onto her arm as she hid her face in the bend. She stayed like that, not even daring to move an inch, to let the pain go away.

After a while though, it was still there, and by now, Chris was starting to get desperate. So, she brought the whistle to her mouth.

Up top, Samantha tossed aside a small piece of debris and bent down to grab a larger piece. Though she paused when she heard something.

She stood up as the sound came again.

"Hey guys! You hear that?!" she called.

"What?!" Joseph and Dream called at the same time.

"Hush and listen!" Samantha told them.

Everybody shut themselves up in time to hear the sound. A muffled whistle.

Ink hopped up next to Samantha while Dream went farther. The sound came again and he looked at the others.

"Its coming from over here!" he called.

Kyrie made her way over and past Dream, eyes shut as she listened intently. Then she began moving.

Only to suddenly disappear.

"Kyrie!" Samantha cried as she made her way to where the girl had disappeared.

"I'm okay! But that whistle is definitely louder down here" Kyrie said as she looked up before looking around.

She stood up and made her way somewhere, disappearing from everyone's view. After a few seconds, there was a surprised and shocked shout.

"What is it?!" Joseph yelled.

Kyrie appeared in sight.

"I found her! I found Chris. But I don't think she has a lot of time left. Come on!" she yelled before running back.

Samantha wasted no time in jumping down into the hole. She turned to look at Joseph.

"Go find a med team! Tell them we found a survivor!" she ordered.

Joseph nodded and scampered off, leaving everyone else to hop into the hole after Samantha. Chris shook a bit as Kyrie set up a flashlight to provide some light, which revealed Chris's predicament.

A large and heavy slab of concrete was propped up on Chris's upper and lower back, pressing her into the ground. There was another slab of concrete, as well as a large I beam that was pinning Chris's left leg between them, crushing it.

"Hang in there Chris, everyone'll be here in a second" Kyrie reassured her.

Right as she said that, there was the sound of running footsteps, and Chris was overjoyed to see her friends, more overjoyed to see Ink, but due to the pain, all she could manage was a small smile.

"H-hey, guys" she managed to get out.

"Hey girl. How you feelin'?" Samantha said as she came over.

"Definitely been better" Chris responded as she let her head rest against the ground.

After the initial reunion was over, it was time to turn to the biggest challenge.

How to get Chris free without killing her in the process...
