Chapter 21
"Chris! Thank gods you and Ink are here!" Samantha said with relief as she spotted the familiar blue glow of the motorcycle.
Chris quickly slowed to a stop and was met with a small surprise.
"Dream?!" she asked, surprised, as she got of the two wheeled vehicle, taking off her helmet in the process.
Her words caused Ink to look up, who was also slightly surprised to see the golden winged skeleton.
"The attack got so bad that even Dream here had to help out with driving off the fuckers" Samantha explained as she came over to help unload the medical supplies from the motorcycle.
The entire space beneath the seat was filled with trauma kits.
"So what can we do?" Ink asked as he finally removed his helmet while Chris took off her waist belt and cardigan jacket.
She didn't want it catching on anything.
"Ink, your with me on search and rescue. Chris-" Dream started before being cut off with a polite cough.
Everyone turned to look at Kyrie, who had just showed up. Her hands were covered in blood stains from putting pressure on some of the more serious wounds.
"Sir, if I may, if you were going to put Chris on med duty, I'm going to let you know now. She's better suited for search and rescue, and I just found out we have more than enough med workers. Most of them being volunteers, but still" Kyrie explained.
Dream nodded.
"Then in that case, Chris, your with me and Ink in search and rescue"
"Got it. We should spread out, cover more ground" Chris stated.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
"I'll get the upper part of downtown covered" Dream said.
"I got the lower areas" Ink called.
"I'll stay around here" Chris stated.
"Chris, if your going to stay here..." Samantha said, glancing over at one of the many skyscrapers.
It didn't look too stable. Especially with the lower half being pretty damaged.
"...just be careful, alright?"
Chris gave Samantha a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry. I'll be fine" she said before running off.
Her departure prompted everyone to do the same.

A whole day of thorough searching later, and about twenty buried victims had been recovered. There had been others, but they didn't make it.
Right now, Ink was sitting on a pile of rubble, taking sips from a water bottle. He had been forced by Chris to take a break to recover his strength.
Everyone was taking shifts, as it was clear that this operation of search and rescue was going to continue through the night. After all, the downtown area was so big, it was going to take a while to shift through all the damaged buildings, looking for humans and monsters that might have survived.
In fact, makeshift camps had been made here and there for some of the workers and volunteers to catch some shut eye before getting back to work of moving piles of metal and concrete.
Ink stared down at the water bottle in his hands before glancing over at a skyscraper. Chris had went inside half an hour ago to search for anyone who were trapped on the upper levels and still hadn't returned.
Or maybe she did and Ink just didn't notice.
He sighed and returned his gaze to the water bottle, only to look back up when he heard approaching footsteps. Dream took a seat beside him, ruffling his dirty feathers.
"Nothing from Chris yet?" he asked, looking at the silent walkie-talkie everyone had been given before they separated.
"Nope. Nothing yet" Ink replied, glancing at the device before staring at his water
"I'm sure she's alright" Dream said reassuringly, only getting a hum in reply.
Ink glanced at the bird skeleton when he started chuckling a bit.
"What's so funny?" Ink asked.
"You love her. Don't you?" Dream replied with a light smirk.
Ink blushed and looked away, the action alone giving away his feelings. Dream's smirk turned into a genuine smile as he looked out at what was happening.
"You two would be perfect for each other" he said.
Ink grumbled a bit, but he secretly agreed with Dream. Suddenly, people starting to panic and yell caught a lot of the worker's attentions.
The cause for the sudden alarm quickly became apparent as people started to quickly move away from the skyscraper Ink had been watching.
"Shit, its coming down!" Dream realized.
Ink snatched up the walkie-talkie and started speaking into it.
"Chris, are you there?! Do you read me, over?!" he called.
There was a moment of deafening silence before a garbled reply came through.
"Ye-...here...ed...-ver"
"Chris, I'm going to need you to repeat that, over" Dream said seriously.
Another second of silence passed and Chris's reply came through, still slightly garbled, but much more clear.
"Yeah, I'm-...read you, over"
"Chris where are you, over?" Ink asked.
The next reply came out pretty garbled, but what little bits Ink and Dream were able to make out, was terrifying.
"Inside... building.. helping someon-...-ver"
"Chris, the building's collapsing! Get out of there!" Ink yelled into the radio device.
"What...tha..er?"
"Everyone! Get away from the building!" some medic workers yelled, ushering people away from the collapsing skyscraper.
There was a sudden bright flash from the ground floor of the skyscraper, which quickly drew everyone's attention to the three people inside. Chris panted a bit as she pushed the two people forward.
Her energy was almost spent with all the teleporting she had done.
"Go! Get out of here!" she ordered the two people, who wasted no time in following the direction.
She turned away and disappeared in a bright flash, landing on one of the higher levels.
"Told you I was going to come back. Now come on! We don't have much time!" she told the person in front of her.
She held out her hand and they grabbed on. A gut dropping sensation later, and the two were back on the ground floor.
The people outside the building began screaming and pointing upwards. Their actions let Chris know that her time had run out.
She put her hands on the person next to her and focused her magic. The person disappeared from her side and was outside in a bright flash of light a second later.
Chris jumped to the side to avoid a large piece of the ceiling that had fallen to the ground, which had begun to shake. Looking up and around, her gaze caught Ink's.
His eyelights were filled with fear.
Chris gave him a sad, but reassuring smile, before suddenly disappearing under the debris of the collapsing building...
