Chapter 11
Chris quietly laid on her stomach, observing the action below her from her overhang. After an hour of wandering around, she had finally stumbled upon a very large campsite.
It almost looked like the one she had found the last time she was in Jungletale, except with a few more large tents. There were so many people here, Chris was wondering if this was a base of operations for this AU.
Meh, probably was. Chris took out her binoculars and set them up to her eyes, instantly zooming in on the action below her.
After looking around a bit, Chris brought the binoculars down. And instantly noticed the shadow of a person that was standing behind her.
Chris's eyes widened and she flipped herself onto her back, which allowed her to see three S.S.O. people standing there. The one closest to her was holding her at gun point.
"We're giving you one chance and ten seconds to tell us who you are" they said.
"Uhh..." Chris said as she put her hands up.
She suddenly caught sight of a dead tree. It wasn't too big, but it would make a good distraction.
She was already half-way through her ten second countdown. She closed her eyes and focused her magic on the roots of the tree.
"Five..."
The tree was moving slightly, but it wasn't enough!
"Four..."
Come on, come on!, Chris thought, concentrating harder.
"Three..."
Small beads of sweat were beginning to form as Chris focused on the roots of the tree.
"Two..."
Come on you stupid tree!
"One..."
...Yes!
Right before the gun was fired, the dead tree fell over. Chris quickly stopped using her magic so that no one except her noticed the quickly fading soft green light.
The sound was enough to distract the S.S.O. members.
"The fuck was that?!" one of them asked.
Chris quickly stood up and launched herself at the closest one, who gave a yelp of surprise, which alerted the other two. But by the time they turned around, Chris had an arm locked around the guy's throat and holding the gun he had against his head.
"Make one sound, and I'll shoot him dead. And I don't care who hears it. Now put your weapons down" Chris threatened, pressing the gun harder against the guy's head.
The two S.S.O. members looked at each other then back at Chris.
"I said, put, your weapons, down" she hissed, pressing the tip even harder so that the guy winced.
The S.S.O. members gave in and slowly put their weapons down.
"Now turn around, and put your hands on your head" Chris ordered.
The S.S.O. did as they were told. Chris held the gun in her mouth and quickly, yet quietly, broke the guy's neck.
She laid him down on the ground and approached the two S.S.O. people, taking the gun out of her mouth. She swiftly slammed the butt end of the gun into both of their necks, knocking them out.
After that, she summoned a piece of rope...
- small time skip -
Chris quietly sighed as she stood up, tying her hair up into a neat bun. She was now dressed in an S.S.O. uniform.
Her usual clothes had been rolled up and cleverly buried under a bush. The two S.S.O. members had been tied together to a tree, and the dead body had been tossed down a nearby ravine.
Chris gave a quiet chuckle as she looked over herself and her work.
"Dream and Ink would so not approve of this" she said quietly with a soft chuckle.
She looked back at the base camp behind her.
"Welp, let's go" she said to herself.
- time skippy -
Chris gave a quiet sigh of relief as she got to the control room. No one really payed much attention to her, so she was able to get through the place.
Apparently, the person she had 'borrowed' the clothes from was a newbie, so Chris didn't encounter any problems when asking for directions around the place. Now, she looked both ways before closing up the tent and walking over to the computer that was in there.
"Alright, if this is a computer, then there must be somewhere to plug this in" she said softly to herself, holding a USB flash drive.
After a minute of searching, Chris found a USB port on the front panel.
"Aha! Bingo!" she said softly to herself before plugging in the flash drive.
"Alright, how long will it take you to download all of the information?" she said, typing away on the computer.
A loading bar appeared, and Chris scowled at the time it would take.
"Ten minutes?! Really?!" she quietly hissed.
Every minute more she spent here meant an even better chance of people finding out she wasn't really with the S.S.O. But she had to take the risk, so, she pressed 'start'.
- yes, another small time skip -
Chris sighed. It had been seven minutes since she plugged in the flash drive, and she still had thirty percent left of the information to download.
Thank god it would only take three minutes. Suddenly, she was interrupted when someone began fiddling with the opening of the tent.
Chris tensed up and scrambled to click away the loading bar. She turned around when someone entered the tent.
He must be a high ranker, Chris thought as she observed the multiple small medals that were pinned to the guy's military jacket.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" the guy asked with a growl lining his tone.
"U-um..." Chris stammered, thinking fast.
She had to keep this guy from finding the flash drive!
"Well?" the officer asked, quickly getting impatient.
"Um, I'm just, watching over this, making sure no one's messing with it, you know" Chris said finally after a moment's hesitation.
The guy looked skeptical.
"Where are the guards that were in here?" he asked.
"Er, they went to take a break. And they left me in charge until they got back" Chris replied.
One minute, she thought. Just keep him off for one minute.
"Alright then, I'm going to go and find the two people who were supposed to be in here, and find out what they think about this. You stay here" said the guy in a threatening manner before turning around and leaving the tent.
After he was gone, Chris let out a quiet sigh of relief. Suddenly, her flash drive beeped, signalling that it had fully downloaded everything on the computer.
Chris quickly removed the flash drive and closed it. After checking to make sure no one was watching, she quickly ran out of the tent.
"Hey! What did I tell you newbie?!" someone yelled.
Chris looked over to see the guy from before marching towards her, two people in tow. None of them looked happy.
She nervously chuckled.
"Sorry! Gotta go!" she replied before turning around and taking off running.
"Hey! Someone! Stop her!" the guy yelled, pointing after her.
Chris then teleported right then and there, making people stop and stare. The guy was shocked, then he smiled menacingly.
He turned to someone.
"Call the boss! Tell him we've encountered Project Six Fourty-nine" he said.
The person nodded and ran off. They guy turned back to where Chris had disappeared.
"Alright, Christopher Jackson. You want to play a game of Cat and Mouse? Then let's play" he said.
"Fan out! Search the area! Find her!" he ordered.
People hurried to comply.
Meanwhile, Chris hurriedly clipped on her waist belt, the flash drive safely stowed in her pocket.
"Heh, guess they found you out, huh?" said one of the people who were tied to the tree.
Chris glared at them, not stopping with her movements, until a snap of a tree branch caught her attention. She swiftly turned around to see someone aiming a crossbow at her.
"Halt thief!" the person holding it cried.
Chris put a fingerless gloved hand up, but then gave a two fingered salute before running off.
"Hey! I said halt!" the person yelled as more S.S.O. members appeared behind them.
The group then chased after the female fighter.
Which all lead to where she was now...
