Secrets

So, I heard this song and though it really fit with the onehot, so I put it here. It's by a band called Set It Off. Check them out if you've got time, their music is really good.

Night 1

Kokichi got home late today. He looked more tired than normal.

Shuichi jumped up from the couch as soon as he walked through the door. "What happened? You should have called if you were going to be late. I was worried."

Kokichi's weary eyes widened. "Oh, sorry, I just had a long day at work, I didn't mean to worry you. I'll call next time, promise."

Shuichi went up to Kokichi and hugged him, resting his chin on Kokichi's head. "Okay, just don't worry me like that again. Come on, let's go to sleep. You look exhausted."

Night 5

A few days passed, and everything seemed normal. Shuichi barely gave the incident from a few nights ago a second thought.

Or at least, he didn't until he checked my voicemail.

"Hey Shuichi, I've got another gigantic load of work to get done, so I'll be back late. Don't wait up, and try not to miss me too much."

That was the message Kokichi left. It seemed perfectly innocent, Kokichi's voice being cheerful, even teasing at the end.

But Shuichi knew his boyfriend too well. Kokichi lied and joked to hide discomfort, pain, fear, anything he didn't want people to see. It was a habit he had yet to break. That itself didn't other Shuichi -he loved Kokichi the way he was- but it made Kokichi easier to read.

Kokichi was hiding something.

Still, Shuichi trusted Kokichi, so he decided not to question it and went to sleep.

Night 6

Kokichi was late again. He had left a message like last time.

Shuichi decided to wait for Kokichi. He wanted to speak to him about these late hours he was working; it couldn't be healthy.

Shuichi watched as his boyfriend came through the door. Kokichi's shoulders were weighted down with exhaustion. He was looking at the ground as he walked in, and seemed deep in thought.

In the moment before Kokichi noticed him, Shuichi swore he saw something pink on Kokichi's lips.

But then Kokichi did notice him. He quickly at wiped his lips with his sleeve, attempting to make the action look natural.

"Hey Kokichi, I want to talk to you about something," Shuichi stated.

"Why aren't you asleep?" Kokichi asked. "I told you I was coming home late again. Oh, I know. It's because you're afraid of the monsters under the bed, right?"

"I wanted to ask you about your work," Shuichi said, not letting Kokichi sidetrack the conversation. "Why exactly do you keep staying out late? I don't want you to get sick because you worked yourself to hard."

"You don't need to worry about me, I'll be fine. I'm not a fragile as I look." Kokichi closed the door behind him and walked past Shuichi.

"You didn't answer my question."

Kokichi froze and answered with his back turned. "It's nothing, really."

Shuichi didn't believe him.

Night 8

Shuichi was doing the laundry. Like always, he checked every pocket to make sure neither he nor Kokichi left something important in them before putting the clothes in the washing machine. This time, when he searched the pockets on Kokichi's jacket, he found a small paper with a phone number. The paper also had some sort of logo drawn on it, and it smelled faintly of perfume.

Night 12

Kokichi had stayed out late for three days in a row now, and Shuichi was getting very concerned. He made a call to Kokichi's employer.

"Hello, can I help you?" said the voice on the phone.

"Yes, I'm Shuichi Saihara, Kokichi's boyfriend."

"Oh, I remember you. You used to come in and bring him lunch sometimes."

Shuichi nodded, then realized the person on the phone wouldn't have seen it. "Uh, yeah, that's  me."

"What can I do for you?"

"I was wondering if you could take it easier on Kokichi for a while. He's been working a lot of late nights, and I'm worried he's wearing himself out."

"..."

"Hello? Can you hear me?" Shuichi asked.

"Yeah, I can hear you, it's just... Kokichi hasn't been to work for a while now. He was fired a few weeks ago."

"Oh."

Day 13

Shuichi wondered where Kokichi was. He wondered why Kokichi hadn't come home the night before. He wondered what else Kokichi was hiding from him.

Night 13

A very perturbed Shuichi paced, full of conflicting emotion. He was extremely worried about Kokichi, but he was also suspicious. Kokichi was hiding something important, probably more than one thing, but he obviously didn't want Shuichi to know about it.

As if summoned by his thoughts, the front door creaked open and Kokichi walked in.

"Where have you been-" Shuichi cut himself off when he got a good look at Kokichi.

"What happened to you?!"Shuichi rushed over to Kokichi.

Bright pink blood matted his hair and ran down the side of his face. His clothes were stained with it.

"I'm fine Shuichi, really. It's nothing."

"This isn't nothing! Here, come with me so I can clean and bandage the wound." He grasped Kokichi's hand and tried to drag him along.

Kokichi let himself be led away, mostly because he was too weak to resist.

Shuichi made Kokichi sit, then got a wet cloth and cleaned the wound on Kokichi's head.

"Ow! Are you trying to kill me? That mugger already tried that tonight."

"Mugger?"

"Yeah, I was on my way back from work when this huge guy jumped me. It was super scary, he must have been, like, ten feet tall. Luckily, I had my trusty bottle of Panta with me. I threw it at his face and ran. It was a waste of some perfectly good Panta, but I did make it out alive, so I guess it was worth it."

"Sounds like you had quite the little adventure."

Kokichi raised an eyebrow at the Shuichi. "What's with that tone?"

"Kokichi, is there something you're not telling me?" Shuichi asked while bandaging Kokichi's head.

"Huh? What are you talking about?"

"I know you're lying to me about something."

"Well, yeah, I lie about a lot of things. You'll have to be more specific."

Shuichi roughly jerked the bandages as he tied them, making Kokichi cry out in pain. "I know you're lying to me about why you've been staying out. That specific enough for you?" he asked, his voice scathing.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Kokichi said, voice strained.

"I called your employer to ask if they could give you less work, because you've been out late so often. Imagine how I felt when they said you had been fired weeks ago."

"What the hell?! That was none of your business!"

"Kokichi, why won't you just talk to me?! I can't help you if I don't know what's wrong."

"This has nothing to do with you, okay! Just drop it."

"No, I won't 'just drop it'! Why are you keeping secrets from me? Don't you trust me?"

"Holy fuck Shuichi, are you blind?! Sometimes I wonder if you actually see me, or just who you want me to be. This has nothing to do with trust, except for the fact that you obviously don't trust me!"

"Oh, so now I'm the one in the wrong, even though you're the one who walked in here and bled all over the carpet, all while lying to me not just about why you're hurt but about everything you've done in the last two weeks, including the fact you were fired from your job."

"Shuichi, you know, not everything is about you!"

"Well, is everything about you then? Because you sure seem to think so based on the way you've been acting!"

Kokichi jumped to his feet. "I'm don't have to sit here and take this. I'm leaving."

"Wait, where do you think you're going!" Shuichi yelled.

"Out!"

Kokichi left, leaving Shuichi alone in the house full of regrets.

Night 14

Shuichi's head jerked up when he heard the door open. He was still upset at Kokichi, but he also loved him, and wanted to work things out. He was so strung out about their fight he had called in sick and stayed home. He told himself he was staying behind on the off chance Kokichi might come back, but he didn't actually expect Kokichi to come back. Shuichi knew the real reason he stayed behind was because he felt like he needed to punish himself by staying in the empty house and thinking about what he'd done.

Because of this, Shuichi was surprised when the lock on the front door clicked open. Though, he was even more surprised when Kokichi stumbled in, immediately tripping and crashing to the floor.

"No, not again!" Shuichi said, thinking Kokichi was injured like before. However, when Shuichi got up to Kokichi he didn't see any wounds on his body.

Instead, Shuichi found that his beloved stank of alcohol and vomit.

"Shit, Kokichi, what have you done?" Shuichi asked, voice soft with horror.

"Hmmm, Shuichi?" Kokichi asked, dazed. "Why... Why am I ... on the floor?"

"You fell."

"Oh."

Shuichi sighed. "Here, I'll carry you to bed. You need time to sleep this off." He picked Kokichi up princess style and brought him to their bedroom.

Shuichi gently placed Kokichi on the bed and pulled the covers over him. He was just about to leave when Kokichi snagged his sleeve.

"Huh? Kokichi, do you need something?"

Kokichi's eyes were struggling to stay open. "I'm sorry I made you sad, but you made me sad too. I just wanted to be with them because they make me happy," he said, then shut his eyes and instantly fell asleep

Shuichi shakily disentangled Kokichi.'s fingers from his sleeve and fled the room. He agonized over Kokichi's words. How was he making Kokichi sad? And who is them?

Day 15

Shuichi woke up to find Kokichi gone.

Night 22

Shuichi hadn't seen Kokichi in a week, and Kokichi wouldn't answer his calls or texts. Ironically, Shuichi's way of coping is to work overtime every day. He felt like if he didn't distract himself and keep busy the worry and stress he'd been feeling would drive him insane.

Tonight, Shuichi got a tip off from an anonymous source that someone was planning to rob a museum that same night. He decided to stake out the museum to watch for intruders. Because it was such short notice, he wasn't able to obtain any back up though. Either way, he would do his job.

When he spotted a group wearing white clothes and clown masks running from the museum, he was ready. He chased them, the thieves shouting taunts back at him all the while. Up ahead was a van with its side door open, probably their getaway car. Shuichi picked up the pace, knowing that if they got to the car he would lose them. He targeted the shortest one in the group, who lingered in the back of the group, just a bit slower than the rest.

Shuichi just barely managed to snag the part of his target's shirt and pulled him to the ground. A rip sounded as a fragment of the shirt came away in Shuichi's hand.

"Ow!"

Shuichi froze in shock. He  recognized that voice.

Unfortunately from Shuichi, his moment of immobility gave the small thief the chance he needed to get up and escape with the rest of his group.

Having lost the group, Shuichi looked at the one clue he managed to obtain. There was a symbol on the fabric piece he tore from the thief's shirt. The symbol looked very familiar.

Day 23

Shuichi retrieved the phone number he had found in Kokichi pocket. The logo on the paper was the same dice symbol that was on the thief's clothes. Shuichi called the number. Immediately, someone picked up.

"State you business," a feminine sounding voice said curtly.

"I need to talk with Kokichi."

"Sorry pal, I don't know anyone with that name. You must have the wrong number."

"Don't even try that. I know he's there. Tell him that that this is Shuichi Saihara calling, and that if there was ever anything real or meaningful between us then he better come and explain himself."

"Sounds like a personal problem to me. Why should I pass along the message?"

"Because I have the piece of fabric I tore from his shirt last night. I bet that the DNA I could get from it would match Kokichi's. So, we can either talk, or I can just turn this evidence over to the police and have the entire force out looking for him, and by extension the rest of you. Take your pick."

Night 23

Shuichi didn't even bother to look when he heard the door creak open. He just stared ahead and said one thing. "Why?"

Kokichi sighed angrily. "Really. Not, 'I'm happy you're okay', or 'I'm sorry if I missed something going on with you, could you explain?' Nope, you just ask 'why'."

Shuichi glared at Kokichi. "I sincerely doubt you would have robbed that museum if you weren't completely fine. As for the second thing, I did ask you to tell me what was wrong, and you responded by getting angry and saying it was none of my business."

"You just have to be right about everything, don't you?"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means you always think that your way is the right way!" Kokichi snapped. "Did you ever think that maybe I just want to be me sometimes?"

"What are you talking about?"

"What am I talking about?" Kokichi repeated indignantly. "I talking about the fact that this isn't fucking working. I can't keep doing this."

"Doing what? I was under the impression that you were happy."

"Argh! You know, for a detective, you are ridiculously oblivious. Do you really think I was content with all this domestic bliss crap? I want more from life than just going to work and waiting for you to come home. I want to do something."

"If you weren't happy with how we were living then you could have just said something. You didn't have to go and form a gang and steal things on a whim."

"It wasn't on a whim!" Kokichi yelled. "Being thief is part of who I am. I tried to change. I wanted to be with you, but I knew the oh so mighty detective wouldn't compromise his integrity by dating a thief, so I tried to change. But it's not enough. I'm not happy living like this."

"So what you're saying is that I'm not enough for you."

No! Why can't you listen to what I'm saying! This isn't about you. I know you can't help who you are. But I also can't help who I am. I want to be Kokichi Ouma. I'm not happy being just 'Shuichi Saihara's boyfriend'. My entire life can't be centered around you."

"But my entire life is centered around you," Shuichi replied. "Do you know how worried I've been about you? For an entire week you just disappeared, and I had no idea what had happened or where you'd gone. There wasn't a moment when I wasn't thinking about you, and about whether you were safe."

"Yeah, I get that. The only reason I'm here now is because I understand that you never meant to hurt me. I know you genuinely care about me, but you need to accept me for who I am as a whole, not just the parts you like."

"How can you ask me to accept you when you keep lying to me about who you are and what you do? How can I ever trust that you won't just keep hiding things from me?"

"You just have to trust me."

"Kokichi... I... I can't do that. Trust has to be earned, and you've proven that you'll lie to me and keep secrets if it you decide you want to."

"Then this relationship is over."

"What?" Shuichi gasped.

"You heard me. If you can't even find it within yourself to trust me, then you don't really know me at all. It would be best for both of us if we broke this off now before we hurt each other even more." Kokichi turned to leave.

"Wait, Kokichi!" Shuichi grabbed Kokichi's shoulder. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry if I hurt you, but please don't go. I don't want you to leave."

"I'm sorry too Shuichi, but things are better this way." Kokichi kept walking. He didn't turn around. He knew if he did, the look on Shuichi's face would make him give in. He just kept walking, out the door and out of Shuichi's life, away from the home they had shared together.
