Alternate Ending

(So there's a bit of oumasai but its not the focus. I just felt like writing)

"The mastermind who organized the killing game...is ME!"

Kokichi shook his head, trying to shake off the memory. It didn't work, of course. Their faces had been burned into his memory.

Himiko and Tsumugi, pale and horrified. It hurt to see his friends look at him like that. Maki, as cold and heartless as ever. Though Kokichi couldn't care less about a killer like her, it was still disturbing to look in someone's eyes and see that their greatest wish was to see you dead.

And then there was Shuichi. What hurt the most was Shuichi's acceptance of the whole thing. He had hoped that the detective would be different, that he would Kokichi's true self past his veil of lies. But Shuichi never questioned Kokichi's words, never protested that he would never do such a thing. Though Kokichi supposed he deserved it, after what happened with Gonta.

Kokichi glanced up at the exisal walking beside him, and the idiot being carried in its arms. Even with so many of his friends dead, even after learning the world he knew was gone, even while he knew he was slowly dying,  Kaito still had the will to fight. Just another thing to be jealous of. Kokichi wondered if, on some subconscious level, if that was why he chose Kaito for his plan. At the end of it all, they would either succeed and Kaito would be a murderer or they would fail and Kaito would be dead.

Either way, it wouldn't matter to Kokichi. Would he be able to pull it off? Would it hurt? Would anyone even bother to be sad? To miss him after he was gone?

They were at the hanger now. He was really doing this. Soon, he would be dead.

(a few days later)

Kokichi looked up at the monitor as an announcement played. "A body has been discovered! Everyone please report to the dining hall!"

"What?" Kokichi gasped. "Why-"

Pounding on the bathroom door.

"Hey, let me out of here you bastard!" Kaito yelled. "What happened? What did you do to them?"

But Kokichi was frozen where he stood.

Bang. Bang. Bang went the door.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

Bang. Bang. Bang. Or maybe it was his heartbeat instead.

Only he was supposed to die. So why...

"Hey there!" Monokuma said as he popped out from nowhere, as usual. "What a coincidence meeting you here Mr. Mastermind. You know, it kinda reminds me of a day a long, long ago, when I met my one true love. You see, she was a beautiful, delectable salmon. Everyone always said ours was a love that could never be, and they were right. It all started on a warm, summer evening."

Kokichi interrupted Monokuma's spiel, his face displaying a carefully constructed image of boredom. "So hey, not that this isn't interesting or anything, but do you mind telling me how you got in here? The exisals were supposed to be watching you."

"Upupupupu!" Monokuma cackled. "You really are clueless. You didn't really think you were in control did you?

"And what exactly do you mean by that?"

"Think about it for a second," Monokuma replied. "In order to make the killing game possible, I have to know everything that goes on in this academy. Every nasty plot, every murder, down to the slightest detail. The class trials wouldn't work otherwise. And yet, even with the Monokubs' help, we couldn't possibly be everywhere at once. So, how could I possibly know what goes on in this academy?"

"You must have cameras hidden all over the place, duh. I knew that already. What does that have to do with anyth-" Kokichi stopped dead as he realized. How could he have been so stupid? He had suspected there were cameras, it was why he brought the electrobombs with him the first place. But, if Monokuma really had cameras everywhere, then he must have seen Kokichi ask Miu to make the electrobombs and electrohammers in the first place. He must have known the whole time, but he let Miu build them anyway.

Monokuma cackled again. "I can see from the look of despair on your face that you've figured it out. I've known about your little scheme this entire time, and of course I made sure to prepare some counter measures. The exisals are now back under my control. But never mind that. That's not important anymore. What I really came here to say was, congratulations!

"Huh? Congratulations? For what?"

"For winning the killing game of course!"

"For... winning the killing game?" Kokichi repeated. He wasn't sure he could do anything else, shocked as he was.

"Yup!" Monokuma went on, mercilessly. "As per the school rules, the killing game will continue until only two students are left. That means you and Kaito get to graduate! Isn't that great?"

"Oh I see. And what happened to my beloved Shuichi and the others? I heard the body discovery announcement earlier."

"Why, you of all people should know. After all, you were the one that crushed their hopes of leaving this place and returning to their boring old lives. Their homes, their friends, their families, you forced them all to accept that they were all lost forever. What did you think was going to happen after you took away their reasons for living? Anyway, enough about those losers. It's time for you leave this place. Oh, I'm so proud!"

"And where exactly am I supposed to go? The outside world is uninhabitable."

"Upupupu! Don't worry, you'll see."

And he did. The real outside world, whole and healthy. There were people there. Many of them were fans. Some even asked him for his autograph.

It made him sick. How dare they? His friends had died traumatic, painful deaths, and these people had the audacity to act like everything was okay, like he didn't hate every single one of them for what he had been through, for enjoying how he and his friends had suffered. It was something he and Kaito had in common.

Overall, he wasn't sure escaping was worth it at all. There was, however, a silver lining. A little bit of hope. An idea.

Kiibo was proof that the technology of this world was advanced enough to maintain an intelligent mind in a mechanical body. Alter ego Gonta was proof that a person's memory data could be used to recreate a person's mind. And then there were the flashback lights, which contained all the memories used to make his friends who they were. It was a possibility, but one he clung to. Maybe, just maybe, he'd be able to save them after all. Maybe he'd get to see Shuichi again.

It was a slim chance, admittedly, but that wasn't going to stop him. Kokichi smiled sardonically to himself. He had meant to die for the sake of people who hated him. Instead, he had survived, only to dedicate himself to saving those people. It was ironic, really. As long as it was possible, though, he had to try. It was just who he was. He told Kaito about his idea, and together they dedicated themselves to their new goal. It was funny how, in the face of this new world, his worst enemy had become his only friend.

(years later)

"It's almost done." Kokichi muttered. "Just one last finishing touch. There. Now all that's left is to activate it. Or should I say him?"

"Does it matter?" Kaito asked. "Just hurry up already."

Click. There was a whirring sound.

The robot laid out in front of them sat up and looked at them, then recoiled. "Wh-who are you? Where a-am I?"

"Easy." Kaito said. "I promise we'll explain, but first, could you tell us your name?"

"I-I'm Shuichi S-Saihara, the Ultimate detective."

In case you're wondering, the reason there were only one body discovery announcement is that aside from Kaito and Kokichi, there were only 5 people together: Maki, Tsumugi, Shuichi, Himiko, and Keebo. When the first person died, there were still enough people to trigger the body discovery announcement (three spotless + one blackened) but once the second person died it wouldn't be triggered anymore people there wouldn't three spotless to "find" the body (two spotless + one blackened).
