Storming the Castle
What was calling her here? First, it was this strange book, and now after she had hidden it away. It was like words were whispering in her heads. It kept saying to save a little girl.
Her unnatural body glided through the air, passing over the many people struggling, dying, or running away. There was nothing that she was able to do for them. It would end the same. They all looked up to her, and she had failed them, she killed them. The men, the women, and children, all of them killed with her hands.
Then why was she answering this call? What was it revenge, hatred? She did not have an answer yet her body went forward, anyway. She sliced and diced every creature that passed by her, anyone that got in her way. Each kill she made, however, was like a pebble fighting a mountain.
What was before her now was bizarre it resembled a castle yet it looked like a monument that had been built to reach the sky. Ash sensed many within, but what was drawing her seemed to be at the bottom. She grabbed and held on to one of the biggest creatures nearby and crashed headlong into the wall with a roaring rumble, debris and dust kicked up in the air.
The creature had exploded from left-to-right as Ash saw cages upon cages of people trapped within. They were thin, and she had to kill the hunger inside of her as her body urged her on to what had called her here.
"Monster!!" people shouted as Ash got close, they skidded and hid back in the corner of their cells.
Ash paid it no mind as she was running out of time. She picked up the pace as she rushed forward to the cage that was holding the one that called her. Her face was in shock as she saw who it was. Domenic's daughter and Mallory were here. She tore the cage open and as she was about to speak.
She saw the defensive look that she was getting, the only one that looked at her the same way was the little girl. She had to be about six years old, that was probably why she couldn't tell what she was.
"No time," Ash said as she went to grab both Mallory and the child, but only managed to grip the child as Mallory fell.
Loud hissing noises came from down the hall. It was followed by thundering footsteps. Time had run out, she couldn't wait here.
Ash took the child despite the mother's plead the hits she got from Ralph who couldn't recognize her and as she rushed towards the light. She missed the lunging strikes of the snakes in her way. Finally, at the end, her eyes were locked for a brief second with that thing, a monster with such unimaginable power just before she was through the gaping hole in the wall.
Ash flew, not looking back as tons of minor creatures rushed her to no avail. She wondered why that thing had not given chase. She was sure that she would not be able to outrun her.
Looking down at the little girl in her arms, she didn't seem to be afraid of her in the slightest. Her eyes were trained back towards the direction of where her mom was, yet she didn't cry or resist. Was Domenic now the same as her? Ash wondered as she landed now a great distance away from the castle. It was an old park some seesaws and swings were showing their age. At least for now they were now almost undetectable.
She let the little girl free from her grip as she studied her. How was she able to call her? Ash wondered, or had she even called her at all.
The girl's eyes were still looking in the direction of the castle before she spoke. "Thank you."
Ash nodded her head from side to side. The small wings on her back shake as her words seemed to vibrate her body. "Don't thank me yet."
"Mommy always says I should thank people who do nice things. I saw it that you wanted to help us from the bad lady you're not evil. Your nothing like her."
"You can hear me ?"
The girl nodded.
"No other human could."
"The book told me you were coming."
"That book huh and I am not evil," Ash chuckled, "if I weren't evil, I probably wouldn't be in this position."
Alice turned to face her as Ash's body seemed too slumped down on the dirt.
"My sister died because I was jealous, we never got along. All my mother would talk about was her, nothing else. She couldn't see me, Alessandra this and Alessandra that not me ever. No matter how hard I tried and... even that day when we fought." Ash paused and looked into the sky. "She was smiling at me, she hugged me despite she was dying. I still felt nothing but envy and nothing else. I was the one that killed my sister and that devil found me."
Ash looked away. "How many times had my mother visited that grave? How many times had she ignored me? I couldn't even save her, I couldn't save anyone. No tears ever came no matter how much it hurts me only the thoughts."
Ash felt hands touching her as gentle words spoke to her. "You saved me."
Those words, that touch, slowly warmed her heart.
