By Any Means

Eric sat in his office, work had been slower today than usual. Maybe it was because of the lack of people coming in to seek a lawyer on their behalf to defend themselves from the now extinct 19th or the fact that people didn't believe in the system anymore in the concept of justice.

He fought his nicotine craving as his eyes shifted from the cigars on the table to his certificate hanging in the room. It had been more than thirty years ago when he first started law.

"Damn, I feel old," he chuckled as he placed his hand behind his head.

Yet he was nowhere near the amount he would like to retire with. The constant devaluation of the Pelgarian dollar left a bitter taste in his mouth almost wiping out the middle class completely. People may have work now, but working hard every day and unable to buy bread one might just not work at all. Domenic in that regard was lucky in comparison his mother would be happy to know that he was trying to help others although it was quite fruitless at the moment. It was better that he tried something than do nothing at all but Domenic was one man and this was just one Country.

He, himself was also in the same boat, he could not remember the last time he voted. The last time he flipped the TV onto the news, only fools didn't know that the major was a puppet. A shadow of what a government should look like and that was the only reason that Hernado remained in office. He was the man that did absolutely nothing for the people, but the people knew if he changed it wouldn't make a difference. The people that held the power were those with money the U.A.C had united twenty-five nations loosely together that would have never done it. If they were run under their regular government. On paper, it may have seemed like a good thing at first, but all those people did it for was to sate their greed, and chief among them was Cassis.

He was a man that had to have everything, that had any value, regardless of the cost or the backlash. He was almost like a depraved demon in the way he sought it. Squeezing the poor people dry, squeezing them out of their jobs first. He was the one that brought about the 19th something that not many people knew because he made it seem as though it was proposed by his government shifting the people's blame and anger temporarily. Replacing them all with machines, he had gone to a few places that Cassis owned from restaurants to Casinos instead of being greeted by a person, he had instead changed the format to robots that emulated humans.

Eric thumped his finger on the table as his eyes glanced the time: 12pm. His phone rang for a moment, catching him off guard.

"Hello?" he answered.

"Hello, Mr. Whittaker this is Cassis," the voice spoke.

Cassis, Eric thought.

"How can I help you?"

" I would like to bring you on to my team as you know they are many changes that are happening right now. I heard you're familiar with Domenic and that you worked with him and still know him."

"Yes."

"Work with me and I will make sure that you are taken care off, I just need things to go back to the way they once were."

"Okay, I would have to sit down and think about it."

"Sit down and think about it? I am coming to you now."

"Excuse me, sir, you can't enter there."

Eric heard a knock on his door.

He had been here this whole time?

"Sir?"

The door was opened and staring him on the other side was Cassis. He stepped in as the receptionist Marionetta tried to stop him.

"It's okay Marionetta," Eric said.

"We meet at last the famous Whittaker," he said as he took his seat as he smoothened his thick eyebrows.

The blue suit he was wearing looked tailor-made.

Eric took in the man's appearance. He was thinner in person than he saw on the protest on TV. The dimple on his cheek showed with his smile as he looked around the room his left eye, in particular, seemed to be slow. He passed his hand over his bald head before playing with his bushy beard.

"Like I was saying, I am offering you five million dollars to help me get rid of Domenic and to bring back the 19th. You would be a most useful man in that venture."

"For the most hated man in the country, I thought you would have way more bodyguards."

Casiss chuckled, " My men are waiting outside, I didn't want to spook the receptionist or anyone else for that matter."

"What you're asking is something, I cannot do."

"Why do you feel some sort of loyalty towards people you work for? The offer is far better than any you would get."

"It's my own principles, yes, I would like to be better off, but I won't do it. By sabotaging my trust or revealing information on clients that I have. I didn't build a reputation over so many years on distrust and deceit."

Cassis got up from the chair. "Well, I had hoped you would have been easier to work with since I lay everything on to the table. You might think today's business might only be for today, but I would let you know that I am the one that dictates everything in this city. So what will you do if business continues like this I wonder?"

Eric adjusted himself in the seat as he contemplated what he was saying.

"I bet you will be the one that comes crawling to me in the end and I will be waiting," he said as he left closing the door behind him.

What should he do now?
