Ranking the fgo chapters because I'm bored

Hi, my name is CelestiaTomoe22 and I am a player of a game called Fate/grand order (or fgo for short). Fate grand order is a gacha game based on the fate world which follows the Chaldea security organization as they continuously save humanity from being totally whipped out. The game current features 3 acts, the first act call "the incineration of humanity" is 9 chapters long (with one being the prologue). The second act is known as epic of remnant as is 4 chapters long (technically I think it's like 6 or 7 but some of them were events and if I tried to rank events then CCC would easily run away with the top spot and nobody wants that.) The third and final act is called "cosmos of the lostbelt" and it will presumably be 9 chapters long however only 7 chapters have released so far and only 3 of those are currently available on the English server. For this I will be ranking all nine chapters from the first act, all 4 chapters from the second, and the first three of the third act. Obviously a spoiler warning should be in effect.

TL:DR: 16-14 are bad, 13-12 are just decent, 11 is just good, 10-5 are great, 4-1 are borderline masterpieces.

16: A.D. 2004, singularity F: fuyuki city: starting off at the very bottom we have the prologue chapter. The prologue chapter is what you'd expect of a prologue, it sets up the characters you're going to be dealing with in the future, provides fan service for fate series watchers (or readers), and sets the expectation that servants may appear in multiple classes throughout the game however out of all the characters we meet in this chapter only 2 are actually important to the story (those being mash and Romani). Caster cu is cool but he doesn't really do much, salter is actually very weak in her appearance here when compared to later chapters and events, nameless does jack s*it in this singularity and we still haven't received lancer Medusa (to be clear I don't mean Medusa lily as they are clearly two different servants) yet.

15: 2000 A.D. pseudo-singularity II: subterranean world of folklore, Agatha: Agartha just...... really sucks man. It has some great servants in Penthesilea, Wu Zetian, Heracles, astolfo, chevalier d'eon, and Francis drake (well not really but whatever) but it completely ruins all of that because Christopher Columbus is also a servant here does the exact same thing as the archer of shinjuku in the chapter RIGHT BEFORE THIS ONE and manages to be far less charming doing it because he sounds like a racist wife beater. On top of that they completely take away heracles's speech and make him into megalos Heracles (which isn't a different servant you can summon because..... idk delight works hates male servants) and fergus (who's also there but like not really) gets a Lily version that you also can't get in game which I also think is bs but again delight works hates male servants. The whole singularity is just so uncomfortable to sit through and the story is easily the worst in the epic of remnant chapters period. Honestly the only thing saving this from the bottom placement is that it introduces some good servants and there are things that actually happen in this god forsaken chapter as opposed to fuyuki.

14: A.D. 0060, second singularity: eternal madness empire, septum: septum is...... just really boring? Like there isn't a lot to say about septum, Nero is great but when particular brand of personality fits better in the roles given to her in the summer 2 and Nero/gil fest events rather than being the main character in a regular singularity. Altera is also great but she's only really around to kill lev and then lose to the archer (or Heracles with castle of snow) you picked out of the support line up. Most of the servants introduced here are either boring (boudica and the berserkers), are better in later story chapters or events (zhuge liang, jing ke, nero, stheno) or were immediately forgotten about after this chapter and have yet to be brought back (Alexander, Julius ceaser, altera). Like I said septum is just boring and it's not helped by the fact that Nero is a four star servant who was put in rate up for this event because the only five stars in the whole chapter are zhuge Liang (whose Chinese not Roman but it's pseudo-servant waved bs so it's fine) and altera (who again says hi and then dies) which breaks the pattern of every other singularity where the main servant is a five star and it is one of two singularities to do so (the other one gets a pass and you'll understand why when we get there.

13: A.D 1431, first singularity: Hundred Years' War of the evil dragons, Orleans: I want so badly to like orleans more than I do but it falls into the pitfall that a lot of first act singularities fall into. Ritska in the first 4 (5 if you include singularity F) or so singularities is just so boring and oblivious that it makes them seem like more of a non-character than someone who's supposed to be the main character. Luckily this is fixed somewhat after the end of the London singularity but it isn't fully fixed until Camelot which we'll get into later. Orleans has one of the better casts in my opinion (Marie Antoinette, Mozart, Jeanne d'arc, jalter, kiyohime, Elizabeth ((lancer)) Atalante, Martha, sanson, carmilla, and lancelot) but with the exception of Marie and Mozart they all appear during later events and even in the main story and do a better job of showing off their personalities in those events and stories (and considering that one of the events I'm talking about is a summer event revolving around a looping comic con knock off on a fake Hawaii, I think that says a lot and that's not even mentioning the Christmas event about Lucia libre and samba Santa). Marie and Mozart are both phenomenal here and that's really what puts this above septum, also it feels like your actually doing something in this singularity rather than just wandering around Rome with Nero. Personally I think this could have beaten out the number 12 or even the number 11 spot if it wasn't for Gilles who I personally think Fate just needs to drop from the cast of characters that they like to push, people like fate zero but everyone hates Gilles...... caster Gilles at least.

12: A.D. 1523 third singularity: sealed ends of the four seas: okeanos: in all fairness to orleans, okeanos from a strictly story perspective is worse when compared to orleans. What makes okeanos better is that it's cast actually feels like they shine here. This is the first singularity where mash starts to really be...... mash. Mash's whole arc throughout the greater story of the first arc of fgo is becoming more human (she's a homunculus and blah blah blah fate s*it happened and now she's a servant of sorts) by learning from all the great heroes you fight alongside. The problem with orleans and septum (and to some extent fuyuki but it's much less pronounced there) is that it's unclear what mash is supposed to learn from them, with okeanos that's not a problem. Francis drake, in what is probably the only role in the whole fgo world in which she is actually allowed to play as herself, is a phenomenal travel partner for this singularity and it's very clear what lesson of humanity she's meant to represent. Another major factor in what makes this singularity good is that the 'good guys' are only made up of a handful of servants for most of the singularity which is in opposition to how orleans and septum did things. Euryale and asterios make their appearance here and once again this is one of the only times we seem them just being themselves in fgo (asterios will later come back as a mindless berserker Minotaur in Anastasia a la megalos herc but stheno usually fills any roles that could be given to euryale and even then It's rarely actually stheno) and they are also amazing. Orion/Artemis was also here which is just kind of like..... okay whatever moving on and so is David..... who's fine and also doesn't really appear outside of okeanos as David. The 'bad guys' are more of a mixed bag, blackbeard is fun comedic relief and overall he's pretty great but he doesn't really shine until later events, Anne Bonny and Marie Read put in a weak performance here and will continue to put in weak performances in their later appearances, Jason sucks as a person and isn't super threatening but he's fun to make fun of, hektor feels out of place here and I think Heracles was here but he didn't leave much of an impression. The last evil character okeanos is actually Medea Lily who is a third act twist villain that I think lots of players could see from a mile away but Medea Lily is a great character (#justiceformedealilysanta) and puts in an enjoyable performance. Similar to septum okeanos feels a little fetch questy and pointless but it thematically fits better with the treasure hunting pirate Francis drake than the singing Roman emperor Nero Claudius (umu) and the cast manages to not make it feel boring and redundant.

11: A.D. 1888, fourth singularity: the mist city: London: talking about London is basically just talking about okeanos. The cast is great and manages to never make things feel boring and the annoying fetch quest nature is all but done away with in exchange for a more mystery focused story. The singularity is far from perfect, both kintoki and Tamano showed up at some point in the story and I can't remember what in the world they even did, but this is definitely the first singularity to be actively good and not just okay. Honestly this singularity could have done with some editing, the whole mystery is finding what the h*ll is going on and how do we stop it, but it feels like the characters keep making unnecessary pit stops. There's a fight with Mephistopheles which, while justified, just feels out of place, and then later you have to beat down nursery rhyme for no real reason. Defeating the two casters doesn't push you any closer to finding what's going on, it's only after the jack fight that we even interact with one of the singularities big bad..... only for him to promptly disappear so you have to fight three more missions worth of trash mobs just to curb stomp him in (also this is the third caster boss in the singularity). After some more story discussion and trash mob fighting you end up fighting Babbage (which is the fourth caster boss this singularity but who's counting) and from here on out most of the boss fights and encounters have something to do with the story......... and then there's Artotia lancer alter. Artotia Lancer Alter is only here to foreshadow Camelot and serve as a big bad climatic boss fight for a memorial quest later down the line, a position which is already filled by the Solomon fight in which he manages to kill every single one of your non-mash allies. What does Artotia lancer alter do? Oh yeah she gets curb stomped by the ceaser you've been building up or she curb stomps you because you're only leveled ushiwakamaru because of the four separate caster bosses.

10: lost belt 1, Anastasia: so I know that a lot of people think the lost belt chapters are some of the best the game has to offer and I can definitely see why given the trend of the lost belts we've receive in NA so far but for me personally I do think Anastasia is a weak chapter. The A team member at the center of this lost belt is probably my second least favorite (beryl has never sat right with me) and so I didn't feel emotionally attached to him like I did with the other members (but we'll get to them later). Anastasia is one of my favorite servants but that's mainly due to the few appearances she's had in events since the release of this singularity (mainly summer 3) but she does a serviceable job here as a secondary antagonist. Ivan is a weak antagonist, he doesn't maintain any kind of presence in the story and even at the end it feels like Anastasia is slowly trying to claim the role of main Antagonist despite also having had no presence in the story. Antonio is probably one of my favorite servants to date and I wish we saw more of him (I also wish he was a better servant but that might just be because he's my only avenger) and Atalante alter is basically just the same as her apocrypha counterpart so your enjoyment of her will depend largely of your enjoyment of that story. Avicebron is a similar case but we actually do get to learn some stuff about him and he does subvert his story at the end which serves as the chapters best character moment. Beowulf and billy are also here but they don't do much and feel pointless (something the other lostbelts don't really suffer from). Mash is at her weakest here (personally I really like mash, I think her character journey over the singularities of trying to become more human is an amazing one but after the end of arc 1 her character just begins to feel lost and kind of pointless) and da Vinci loses a lot of her old charm and replaces it with new charm (your enjoyment of da Vinci lily will probably largely depend on your enjoyment of da Vinci proper) and Sherlock hangs around, I've never really liked him in the story but he starts coming into his own during this chapter and I did enjoy him here. Anastasia really doesn't do much wrong, the boss fights are interesting, the story is good, the characters are good, but at the end of the day it just doesn't deliver enough to push it above some of the other chapters.

9: pseudo-parallel world, the stage of carnage: shimousa: shimousa is probably the hardest chapter to rank in the game. The premise of the shimousa is good and it has tons of great character moments but the while thing tends to ring a little hollow. The antagonists are all incredibly weak which isn't helped by the fact that their boss battles are flat out just not enjoyable since you're forced to utilize musashi for most of them. It features some great main characters, muramasa is easily one of my favorite servants to date and the pair Katou danzo and Kotaro fuma serve as a good emotional core for the latter half of the chapter. Musashi is... well she's musashi, you either love her or hate her and that plays a large part in how much you enjoy shimousa as a whole. Personally I think it's most hurt by the gameplay but the story really isn't all that bad. At the end of the day shimousa is held back by it's over reliance on a polarizing character and then forcing that character into your party during every major fight (no seriously I will never forgive DW for forcing musashi in the tomoe and raikou/shuten fights).

8: final singularity, temple of time: Solomon: Solomon is pretty basic in terms of story. You get moments with each of the main characters from each singularity (and then all the event characters just for good measure) and then you go off to fight goetia. I feel like Solomon and your enjoyment of it largely depends on how you feel about mash and doctor Roman, for me this chapter was pretty heavy emotionally. The whole journey mash has been trying to understand what it means to be human and right here at the end she believes that she finally gets it only to be wiped off the face of the earth by goetia, doctor Roman also says his goodbyes here which was equally devastating because he's been one of the best characters the series has ever seen and to see him go really does hurt. The boss fights here are all pretty easy, I mean they might get you the first time around but once you've seen the gimmick it's pretty easy to round up a team capable of laying the hurt down on goetia.

7: A.D. 1783, fifth singularity: North American myth war: E Pluribus unum: the fifth singularity is definitely when the writing for fgo sort of kicked into overdrive. London was an immediate improvement from it's predecessors but the fifth singularity is a large jump in quality. The story takes on a much bigger scale then the previous singularities and puts you in the center of this giant war. Florence is a bit weak as a leading lady if you ask me but the side characters more than make up for that. Honestly they're isn't much to say about this singularity. It can be a bit shallow at times as you're introduced to characters just to have them die a couple of chapters later and Elizabeth makes her second appearance here  (which depending on how you feel about the dragonic idle may affect your enjoyment). The whole thing is pretty long and can feel like a slog at times but it's more than worth it for the payoff. Boss battles are actually kind of annoying in this singularity. Cu alter and mebd are a pretty annoying pair since your casters will drop like flies and there aren't many good f2p assassins, it's nothing an experienced player will have trouble with but a newer player with a not-quite fleshed out roster might find themselves struggling here.

6: A.D. 1273, sixth singularity: divine realm of the round table, Camelot: solid story, solid to great characters, good slice of life and character moments, there really isn't much to say about Camelot story wise. What really makes Camelot special is the gameplay, it's the first singularity that challenges new players. I know a lot of players now look at Camelot and say "that was nothing" and I think for players with more well rounded rosters it might have truly been an easy singularity to clear but for people like me, who were playing through the story in a time where there were no events to sidetrack me or any reason to do anything else, it's fairly difficult. When I challenged Camelot the only archers I had to a decent level was David and the only saber I had leveled period was Cesear (at like level 40) because up until that point I had been funneling most of my resources into servants like Medusa, ushiwakamaru, kiyohime, mash, Hans, and enkidu (my one and only five star at the time who I had literally just gotten) due to the high amount of caster bosses and enemies and the general versatility of those servants. Camelot obviously isn't that hard if you have the right servants, cu alter can pretty easily brute force his way through quite a few fights and euryale invalidates both mordred and Gawain. Asterios in the right team can make Tristan a non factor and there are plenty of other teams that can just nuke their way through this chapter. The important part is that you have a well built team to deal with them, I think a lot of players (especially f2p) had probably been using guerilla teams up until this point, put a counter class support between mash and hans and then watch as the boss crumbled. Camelot however throws that out the window, you well and truly need to put thought into the teams you build to beat some of these bosses (Gawain specifically) and the fact that it forces you to learn how to make a proper team is why I think This singularity is so well regarded.

5: psuedo-singularity 1, 2000, quarantined territory of malice: shinjuku: putting shinjuku in the fifth place hurts, it really does, but I think it's the only fair placement for it. Shinjuku has a great story and it works incredibly hard to mix nostalgia for arc 1 with excitement for arc 1.5 but at the end of the day there are some things which hold it back. For starters, I wanna say that the feature servant for shinjuku, being moriarity is one of the best from the series has ever had. He keeps things interesting and light hearted while also having a deep and emotionally complex story. The story really falls short though because of how slow it can feel, the first part of any of the arcs tends to get bogged down in getting the explanations for the arc as a whole out of the way while also going the smaller dialogue explanations regarding servants abilities or what the plan of attack is. Overall shinjuku is still an amazing singularity and serves as an amazing start to one of the series best arcs.

4: lost belt 2: the eternal Icy fire century, gotterdammerung: coming in at 4 is the second lost belt which is a major improvement from the first one. I mentioned when I discussed Anastasia that it doesn't necessarily do anything wrong but that it just doesn't do anything right enough to be truly memorable, lost belt 2 is quite the opposite. The story of the second lost belt is arguably the best of the three so far with 2 strong antagonists, a great set of main cast members and a raise in the stakes. Ophelia is one of the better developed members of the A team and she's the only one to really have any connection to mash (who has unfortunately been demoted to an almost meaningless character for what we've seen of arc 2 so far). Napoleon is possible one of the best servant allies to date and brynhilder's story with Sigurd give the arc a strong emotional climax. The only real complaint I have with the story is sitonai, Sitonai just feels like an obvious attempt at baiting the audience with a servant that's not going to be released for a while (muramasa, ereshkigal, dolman, Merlin) and she is also a non consequential part of the story unlike servants like her we've seen in the past. This was of course made worse by the fact that skadi was given the same treatment and Napoleon was released before the lostbelt even dropped so the only five star servant you see here that you can get is Sigurd, whose great I guess but I would have rather they release sitonai or skadi along with him (or even had waited to release Napoleon). I know fgo is a way for DW and type moon to make money but sitonai being a clear cash bait just didn't sit right with me.

3: lost belt 3: the synchronized intellect nation, SIN: the third lost belt comes it at its namesake third place. I wanna make one thing clear: I don't think SIN has a stronger story then the second lostbelt in fact I think that SIN's story, while better then Anastasia, is one of the more middling ones. What makes SIN good is that it both keeps the gameplay interesting (if a little frustrating) and has one of the best cast of characters out of the 3 lostbelts we've seen so far. For one thing: all the new servants (with the exception of 2) in this lost belt are you enemies so the ally servants are all familiar faces that you either know and love or hate. Mordred is their usual self and Spartacus has a great showing here but I think the servant that really shines is Jing Ke. Jing Ke is one of many bad 3 star assassins in the game and shes only ever appeared in septum before this however SIN really gives her a few key character moments (a la ushiwakamaru in the Babylonia anime) which help to make her far more likable. Almost all the enemy servants are also fairly like able too despite being the opposition. My main complaints with the story come from the swiftness of it all, this is the first lostbelt that feels easy to get through. I don't mean that in terms of gameplay because there are some hard fights here (mei-ren+Xiang Yu and qin shi huang come to mind as rather difficult fights) but in terms of strong progression. It feels as if the story just moves forward and there are rarely any set backs, I mean you beat hinako three separate times before the lostbelts halfway point and even after that Chaldea proceeds to body a series of servants in a row with incredible ease. Hinako probably has the happiest ending of the three team A members we've seen for but it feels... incomplete (which I suppose is fitting given all that happens also hinkao spiriton dress when DW?)

2: B.C. 2665 seventh singularity: absolute demonic front, Babylonia: I am in fact prepared for the possible hate comments. Look babylonia is a fantastic singularity which is equal parts helped and hurt by its anime adaptation (ushiwakamaru feels better in the anime but quetz feels more annoying, the anime usually just trades in one problem for another). Babylonia has (easily) the best cast of the first arc, gil caster and Ishtar manage to hard carry a lot of the comedic moments and servants like Leonidas, ushiwakamaru (especially in the anime), enkidu, Medusa lily, and ereshkigal manage to give the series an emotional gravity that a lot of the other singularities seem to miss. America feels like a real war and Camelot feels like a true rebellion but Babylon does a great job of portraying a giant war of attrition in which you are on the losing team. Quetz and Jaguar warrior are also here and they're great (at least in the game) and Merlin makes his appearance so if you like Merlin then you'll probably enjoy that. This singularity also has the highest threat level (except for arguably CCC, ooku, summer 3 and the number 1 entry) as you have to face off against your first ever beast in the form of Tiamat. King Hassan is here for like a single second so for all the king Hassan fans out there, here's his one moment in the spotlight. The only problems with the story is that it does feel a bit crowded at times, it pushes mash's journey to become more human the side when it should arguably be in the spotlight, and king hassan has a pretty weak character (not in terms of gameplay) for someone who is supposed to be a grand servant.  Gil caster is the only acceptable Gil, I will not be accepting dissenting opinions.

1: pseudo-singularity 4: the forbidden advent garden, Salem: yes Salem is the best singularity that they've ever put out. Now hear me out, Salem certainty doesn't have as intense of a story as Babylon and it doesn't have as strong of an emotional backbone as the lostbelts but what makes it stand out is the fact that it doesn't need them. Salem is a mystery story at heart, something that DW has only ever tried to capture a few other times and have always failed miserable our, but Salem does it perfectly. Honestly if I didn't know that Abigail was coming out then I would have had no idea what was going on in this weirds version of Salem. Circe, mata-hari, and Charles all make excellent showings here in more serious roles then they've had to serve in the past. Abigail is an excellent feature servant (I truly wish she has better gamplay though), the final boss fight is different enough to feel interesting while not necessarily being so difficult that you need an alter ego to beat it. Salem is also the closest the main cast comes to actually losing in epic of remnant (we don't talk about agartha and CCC's time stuff and BB being BB really prevent any chance of failure there) because abigail is beating chaldea like they're a petulant child in a strict household. Salem is also one of the shorter length singularities which helps it to not overstay its welcome like shimousa or get bogged down in a expository dialogue like shinjuku. Salem wins for me because it's so different from everything else that it stands out, Babylonia is definitely higher quality but a higher quality version of the same type of story, Salem is a high quality story which completely shifts away from the normal formula and decides to do something far more interesting.

Lostbelt 4 is coming out in like 2 weeks so idk where that one will rank but as long as it doesn't Bomb completely then I can't imagine it falling outside of the top 10. If I had to say which group of chapters is the best one then I'd have to give it to epic of remnant, agartha is a low point but the chapters around it are all fantastic and it's short enough to not feel too long. The lostbelts may have better overall quality so far but they aren't finished so I don't feel right ranking them. The first arc is bogged down by a lot of really bad chapters even if it's highs are all pretty good.
