Fanfiction trope tierlist
So there is this tier list template running around that is basically just a bunch of fanfiction tropes and I decided to make my personal tier list and I'm gonna share it and explain my rankings.
First the tierlist itself

Now for the tiers themselves. First we have the icons only club which is for tropes that's I tend to love and see as positives when I'm looking through fics on Ao3. Baddiesonly.com is for tropes that I usually enjoy but don't affect my feelings towards reading a fic. The oof tier is for stuff that I really don't care about, it's not that their bad and I've read good fics with those tags but I usually don't find myself enjoying them as much as other fics. It's a no for me chief is for tags that I see as negatives and make me not want to read a fic when I see that tag. I'm in danger is for fics that I immediately abandon when I see those tags.
Icons only club:
Coffee shop AU: coffee shop AU's are a corner stone of fanfiction in my opinion and most of the ones I read are at the very least enjoyable with the majority of them actually being quite good. I personally just love the mellow feel they have when I want something easy to digest.
Canon divergence/fix if fic: in my mind these two go hand in hand and I love both of them. Canon divergence, when done properly, can really explore the characters and relationships I love a lot more than the canon sometimes does and fix it fics usually fix character deaths, young justice is a fandom with a lot of these and I haven't really found one that I've hated yet so yeah.
Enemies to lovers: can be annoying but I feel like most of the time it's pretty great.
Angst: I mean.... it's angst like who doesn't love angst especially when it's done well.
High school AU: I'm a sucker for these, they're usually cheesy and sometimes trashy but I just love them and that's all I can say.
Mutual pining: I don't know if I actually like this trope or just what it's paired with, it can turn a fic bad if it's super long and drawn out but I usually don't think it is.
Slow burn: I like long fics period.
Soulmates AU: they're not exactly original but they're cute and sometimes they provide tension and point out issues in certain relationships. A good example of this is, keeping with the young justice theme, impulse and blue beetle who are both teenagers but Impulse is literally 13 while blue is bordering on 18 so you can see the problem.
Baddiesonly.com
Sharing a bed/major character death/first kiss/missing scenes: I'm lumping these together because they are all things that I prefer as missing scenes fics. Major character death is kind of the outlier because it kind of comes with the territory of a lot of the fandom's I'm a part of so it's always floating around but I love missing scenes fics that deal with characters reactions to other characters death. First kiss and sharing a bed are both more fluff-like and I only like fluff in smaller doses
College AU/fake relationship/friends to lovers: I'm lumping THESE together because I think that they're all capable of being good but they can also be very annoying tropes. College au's can be messy fast, fake relationships usually overstay their welcome, and friends to lovers get awkward right around the middle when they actually become lovers and I don't appreciate that.
Established relationship: if done right then it can greatly add to a fic but it can also complete stripe a fic of forward momentum and, as I've said, I love long fics.
Miscommunications/hurt comfort: these also kind of go hand in hand for me and their both fine and I actually kinda like them but they don't make long fics usually and once again I like long fics.
Oof: the entirety of this tier is tropes that I think are fine and I really don't have any opinions on them. I will talk for a brief second about fairytale au's and time loop fics. Fairy tale au's almost made it into the It's a no for me chief tier because most of the time I feel like they undermine the characters themselves however there is one my hero academia fic and one fairy tail fic that made me believe otherwise and showed me that it can be done right, overall though I still don't care for them. Time loop fics are actually something I've never seen before, like sure I've seen time travel ones but a loop implies that it's happening multiple times over the same fic and I've personally never experienced that and so it lands in the oof tier because I haven't seen it. Small moment also for fluff which I also enjoy but it needs to be mixed with angst to really reach peak potential.
It's a no for me chief: this is the part where I feel the need to start explaining myself a lot more so sorry if some of them are a bit long.
Crack fic: there's nothing wrong with crack fics, I just don't personally find any enjoyment in them, I think it's because I like angst so much.
Body swap: gonna be honest I haven't read that many body swap fics because the idea is just unappealing. I usually shop characters together because of appearance and personality combined so switching those around makes me not like the couple as much. Like I don't want to read about Brittany (glee) throwing biting remarks around like she's Santana and I don't want to read about Tim drake (DC) being angry like superboy because it just doesn't sit right with me.
Historical au: as someone who enjoys their fair share of fics revolving around same sex couples in the modern day, going back in time and facing homophobia as a driving obstacle in those stories is awesome the first time around but after that it's just kind of boring.
Drunken confession: ummmm no, I don't like alcohol in my fanfiction because most of the time it just muddles things and presents problems both morally and in the story itself. I also feel like in longer fics the drunken confession is used as an excuse to either A) draw the story out more by making the characters avoid each other out of awkwardness of B) a sloppy excuses to finally get the characters together, in both cases it's bad.
Royalty au: a lot of the problems I have with royalty au's are the same I have with fairy tail au's. To make a character royalty you usually have to take something about their character away, for example a character that has a short temper and usually lashes out with violence (such as bakugo ((my hero academia)) or other more generic "bully" characters) has to either be treated as the war mongering king that they would logically end up being or be significantly calmed down which takes away from what may have been one of the main draws to the character.
ABO: simply put I don't like the consent issue that ABO has. I already don't like explicit fics that don't have a lot of plot to them as it is and ABO usually throughs in the wrench that's is consent issues with omega's technically being In a sort of drunken state when in heat and alphas being sent into a craze by their smell. I think ABO can be used to explore characters somewhat, like when characters that are usually considered "alphas" being written as "omegas" but that kind of thing can also be done in other ways that don't have consent issues attached.
Magic au: first of all I've never even heard of a "magic au" like there's Harry potter au's but I have never once seen a fic tagged "magic au" so therefore I'm assuming this is talking about Harry Potter au's. I didn't get into Harry Potter at the right time in my life and because of that I actually don't care for the books (and mainly the author being them) that much so I don't find myself enjoying these fics very much. I feel like with this one it's very necessary for me to repeat that I don't think any of these tropes are particularly bad (in this tier anyway), they're just not things I enjoy all that much.
PWP: I already said I don't like explicit fics without plot like two tropes ago so just like PWP, I don't have much to say.
Pregnancy fic: as someone who read a lot of same sex (specifically male/male) relationships, pregnancy fics are just not fun. Mpreg IS my least favorite non-offensive tag period.
Love triangles: I just think m love triangles in general are pretty icky. Even they're written by "professionals" they usually end up being annoying and I find that POV triangles in fan fiction end in either character assassination for one of the characters involved or second lead syndrome.
Unhappy ending: uhh no, I mean who seriously enjoys an unhappy ending. Like I get it sometimes it's nice be torn apart when you read fanfiction but bad endings just leave a bad taste in my mouth
Unrequited love: there's nothing wrong with this trope by itself and I think it sets up a good foundation for a story but it's also kind of depressing to read in a way that is only good in small doses and when it's stretched out into a longer fic it tends to overstay it's welcome.
I'm in danger: these are the tropes that I either really despise or find problematic.
Bang or die/sex pollen: I think that these tropes are both fairly problematic due to issues with consent. If you like these tropes then you do you, but I just can't vibe with the lack of consent present in most of these situations, like yeah a character can say that it's okay but there are outside influences that make it their only option sooooo yeah.
Dark fic: ummmm I just don't like dark fics because I think they can cause character assassinations and when they don't I just find that they're not very enjoyable, I read fanfiction to see healthy relationships and if I wanted to read about an unhealthy one I'd read After
Huddle for warm: I just think this trope is really cheesy and sometimes sleazy. On its own fine the first time but most of the fics that Involve this are the exact same and I just don't care for that at all.
I was honestly surprised that there weren't some other tropes on this list but I feel like this template covered all of the big ones so yeah, let me know your opinions on my rankings and maybe we can have a discussion about it or something.
