A Circle of Trees
Early this dew
on pine needle floor
soaking into
my memory once more
pulls at the center
of all things
and ponders deep
the meaning
Here as the wind
follows and leads
and wraps me up
in a breeze
Warm as the sun
it gathers well
I hear a whisper
and feel its spell
You were once
the wild and free
The child roaming
among the trees
Crossing the fords
and every brook
Greeting heaven
with earthen looks
Until your feet
met pavement dry
and the world wet the edges
of your childlike eyes
and the forest faded
into a darkened dream
and tomorrow changed
or so it seemed
The man was emerging
from the child within
The clouds of the dawn
moved the storms in
There was an ache for a place
hidden nearby
a cage on a soul
that seemed apt to die
Now I trespass
on these sacred hills
where once I lived free
and had my own will
They bar me out
and don't recognize me
though my heart remains
in a circle of trees
Whisper willow, pine and oak
Let my spirit come to soak
in the waters I once knew
please dear nature, let us through
For I am yet that boy returned
With much pain my heart has learned
to not forsake the gift again
and see the miracle I had back then
