CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR: PERSONAL ISSUES AND PRIVATE AFFAIRS !

14x09

━━━━━━

IT HAD BEEN THE THIRD NIGHT IN A ROW CHANDLER ARWEN FOUND HIMSELF IN THE BED OF CASEY WILLOWS. And who was he to complain? This had been going on for a few weeks now and it was only mere fun. He understood that and so did Casey. Neither was looking for anything too serious, only looking to have fun.

Chandler leaned over, placing his head on Casey's shoulder, trailing his hand over her body and kissing at her shoulder. "Are you awake?" He asks. "Well, if I wasn't then I am now." Casey chuckled as she turned over and kissed Chandler on the lips.

"Gotta say... you might be the best shag I've ever gotten." Chandler comments. "You've said that three times now." Casey stated as she sat up. "Because it's true." Chandler said.

Suddenly, Casey's cell rang and she sat up, looking down to see that it was Tara. Casey warns Chandler to be quiet as she answers. "Hey, Tara. What's up?" As Tara explains that she needs the team in for a case, Chandler kisses at Casey's shoulder and Casey playfully shoves at him. "Yeah, yeah, I'll have everyone there in at least twenty minutes." She nods. "Okay, bye."

"We just got called in for a case." Casey stated, standing up and putting her clothes on. "You've gotta get there before I do." Chandler sighs as Casey tosses her shirt over to him. "I still don't understand why it's a big deal."

"Why what's a big deal?" Casey asks as she heads towards the bathroom. "Telling everyone. I mean, office gossip exists for a reason, you know." Chandler tells as he begins to button up his shirt. "Oh, like announcing to the world that you're screwing your boss on the side? Yeah, no thanks. I like my reputation." Casey explained.

"Plus, Garcia will blab. And I'm not ready for Spencer to know quite yet." Casey admits. "Isn't he doing one of his seminars this month? He won't be around. As for Garcia, then, yeah, I get it." Chandler told.

Casey walks into the room, fully dressed now. "All I'm saying is that I don't want anyone to know. Besides, I have fun sneaking around." Chandler looks at the girl up and down and furrows his brows. "How'd you get dressed so fast?" Casey shrugs, "I'm a girl, it's what we do."

"It's not the only thing you do fast." Chandler smirks. "You are so dirty minded." Casey tells as she crashes into Chandler's lap and he begins to kiss at her neck and Casey unbuttons his shirt.

Chandler catches her lips with his and Casey suddenly pulls away abruptly. "You know, I did tell Tara I'd gather everyone up in twenty minutes." She stated and Chandler shrugs, "You can spare ten."

After a hasty heated moment, Chandler had to leave almost immediately and Casey was right behind him in her car. They had arrived to the BAU within five minutes of each other and everyone was already up in the conference room.

Tara had been on the phone in LA after finishing up a seminar of her own. "Tara, go ahead. You've got all of us." Casey announced.

"Guys, thanks for coming in. I know it's late. There's been a strange spike in questionable opiate overdose deaths here in Los Angeles, and I think it's worth us taking a look." Tara told.

Casey looks up at the screen as she examines the files Tara sent over. "We are right now. What do you see?" Emily asks. "Well, of the most recent cluster of ODs, there are cases that look suspicious. All of them died within hours of completing rehab." Tara explained.

"There are a lot of explanations besides homicide, though." Rossi comments. "Yeah, most addicts go back to their original dose from before they kicked. And their bodies can't tolerate it. They go into shock." Luke explained. "Or their heroin could be laced with Fentanyl, which is to times more potent." Matt suggested. "They only use a little, and that's all it takes to kill them."

"Except we're not talking about heroin users here." Tara stated. "Arm tied off, fresh needle marks, complete system shutdown." JJ points. "They look like heroin overdoses to me. What's the setup here, Tara?" Chandler asks.

"I'm talking about the reason they went to rehab in the first place," Tara starts. "They all checked in for different problems: cocaine, methamphetamine, alcohol. But after treatment, they all died of a heroin overdose. At least that's the pattern that was presented to me."

"That is odd," Rossi tells. "Most addicts relapse on their original drug of choice."

"Tara, who presented this case to you?" Casey wondered and there's an awkward pause from Tara. "Uh... a Dr. Daryl Wright. He's my..." She sighs. "He's my ex-husband."

"He's your what what what?" Garcia questions.
"Huh?" Casey asks at the same time. Garcia mouths over to Casey and JJ and they are just as confused as her.

"Look, guys, if there's no case, there's no case, but I still would like to investigate this on my own." Tara told. "No, you have a case. We're on our way." Emily stated and Tara had hung up.

"So... Tara was married?" Garcia addresses the elephant in the room. "I'm just as confused as you." Casey stated. "I'm sure she has a reason why she didn't tell you guys." Chandler shrugged. "Well, never mind that now, we got a case to take care of." Casey told.

As Casey grabbed the rest of the files and everyone headed out, JJ and Garcia both approach her with looks on their faces. "What?" Casey asks, playing dumb. "You got a glow." Garcia points out and then her jaw drops. "Oh, my God. You had sex."

Casey is baffled and shocked by the accusation yet questioning why Garcia isn't a profiler. "What?" Garcia points at Casey. "And you didn't deny it. She didn't deny it." JJ shakes her head, "I gotta say there's something different about you."

"Whether I'm having sex or not, it's still none of your business, guys." Casey told, chuckling as she walked out of the room.

"Wow, first we find out Tara had an ex-husband and now Casey's doing the deed. The world's gone upside freaking down!" Garcia tells as she walks out of the room.

The team heads to the jet and in the middle of their flight are ready to debrief. "So the challenge of this case is determining if these victims are overdosing by their own hand or against their will." Emily started.

"Any overlap, Garcia?" Rossi asks. "So, as you know, all men and women died within a day of completing various inpatient addiction treatments, but that's the only common denominator. The spectrum of treatments is bafflingly varied from tried-and-true methods to equine therapy and hot yoga to get the monkey off your back." Garcia explains.

"Less 12-step and more day spa." Luke comments. "And there was one center in Oklahoma that forced its patients to work in a chicken coop. Basically indentured servitude." Matt adds.

"Since most insurance carriers cover rehab, treatment centers have been popping up all over the place, all without any consistent medical standards." JJ explains.

"Then assuming we have an unsub, he has a target-rich environment in which to hunt. Maybe it's in one specific rehab center." Chandler suggests. Emily nods in agreement, "His victims are vulnerable, and nobody bats an eye when they OD."

"I've just been notified of what I think is our most recent potential victim. Name is Bonnie Sullivan. I'm sending you information now." Garcia informs.

"Alright, JJ, Rossi, go to the ME, see if this Bonnie Sullivan matches our victimology. Matt, Luke, go to her home. Conduct a psychological autopsy. See if she was susceptible to overdose or suicide. Emily, Chandler and I will set up with the LA division. Tara will be working with Dr. Wright as his office." Casey orders.

Bonnie's family had come in for questioning and Casey and Emily had decided to question them for any information that could help regarding their case. "It couldn't be a dealer. It has to be Vincent." Bonnie's brother stated.

"Who's Vincent?" Casey questioned as Emily wrote that down. "Her old boyfriend. He's the one that got her addicted." Bonnie's sister told.

"Do you have a last name?" Casey wonders. "No. He was always just 'that bastard Vincent' to me." Bonnie's brother stated and she nods in understanding there.

"Does Vincent use or have access to opiates?" Emily asked. "They appear to be the cause of death."

"No. They only smoked meth together." The man answers, causing Casey and Emily to exchange a glance. "And you're certain? She never used injection drugs?" Casey asks.

He nods, "Yeah. Bonnie hated needles. She wouldn't touch them." Casey nods at the man and the woman. "Thank you. This has been very helpful."

"Agent Willows..." The man turns around. "Her kids." He sighs as he tears up, looking at Bonnie's upset children in the division. "What do we tell them?"

Casey sighs, silently thanking God for her son and hoping he'd never go through this. "Tell them the truth. Bonnie didn't overdose by her own hand. She was murdered."

Casey had gone back to the conference room, setting up the rest of the photos when Chandler had walked in. "Hey." He started and Casey took a deep breath. "Hey." Chandler wraps his arms around Casey and she immediately backs away. "What are you doing?" She questions.

"What? I can't hold you?" Chandler asks. "Not in public. Emily's just right outside." Casey reminds. "Plus, I already got Garcia and JJ on my ass."

"Emily won't care," Chandler tells. "You know she can keep a secret better than anyone." Casey sighs, "One peck and then we're back to work." She kisses him on the lips before walking out of the room to take care of a few things.

When everyone had gotten back from their duties, Casey and Emily gathered everyone up.

"Garcia, did you find the research chemicals Tara was talking about?" Emily asks. "Did I!" Garcia announces.

"What are research chemicals?" Rossi asks. "They're chemical cousins of drugs, easy to buy off the 'net from China, mostly. They'd normally be illegal under the controlled substances act." Matt explains.

"Only they're not, thanks to some very imaginative lab rats who modified the molecules so they don't show up on tox screens, hence the term 'research chemicals.' Also, they're hella-potent. And when the lab knew what it was looking for, Bonnie's tox screen lit up like a sad, high Christmas tree." Garcia explains.

"Doesn't make sense, though," Luke stated. "We're in the middle of an opiate crisis. Why go through all that trouble to synthesize fake ones?"

"Because he's a forensically sophisticated serial killer. That's why. If you're an unsub and we can't even identify the drug you're using... you stay in the shadows." JJ explains.

"It's your best bet if you don't want anyone finding what you're doing. Staying in the dark while you plot your next attack on your next victim and nobody catches you... JJ's right, you stay in the shadows." Chandler added.

"And our best lead, Bonnie's ex-boyfriend Vincent. He's out. He's serving years for a botched robbery to pay for his habit." Emily stated. "He doesn't fit our profile anyway. It looks like someone is punishing addicts because he thinks they're gonna relapse." Matt told.

"He could be a moral enforcer or former addict who sees them as weak and not worthy to live." Rossi assumes.

"Or the obvious," Casey starts. "Killing is his addiction. He could be in recovery like his victims, only he's found a new drug. And that's killing people."

━━━━━━

They had discovered another body was found. The victim's name was Clay Miller and he was recently released from a rehab facility called Sweetwater Springs. Casey had decided to go with Chandler, JJ and Luke to speak to people that knew him. They were currently talking to the counselor there named Phil and he handed over Clay's file to JJ.

"That's everything we have on him, his intake evaluation, notes from the staff, everything." Phil told. "Okay, can you tell us who he was close to in here?" JJ asked. "No one. He was a loner. He didn't do the work. That's why we kicked him out." Phil explained.

"Sorry, 'kicked him out'?" Casey repeated in disbelief. She thought that rehabs would help anyone and everyone. She now guessed that it wasn't the case. "He didn't complete the program on his own?" Luke asks.

Luke looks over at Casey. "That could be what attracts our unsub to his victims." He tells and Chandler nods, "Yeah, it could be."

"Quick question. Clay's insurance ran out yesterday. Did that have anything to do with his discharge?" Casey asks.

"Terminal uniqueness," A voice speaks up from behind Casey. The four turn to him and Casey can tell she's already gonna have a problem with him. "That's why we let Clay go. It's called terminal uniqueness. What happens to a junkie who thinks he's exceptional? He relapses. It's inevitable."

"You guys FBI?" The man asks. "SSAs Willows, Arwen, Jareau and Alvez." Casey introduces. "And you are?"

"I'm Dr. Rob Smith. I run this place. Phil here told me you've been asking some questions. He's also not at liberty to give you Clay's file without permission from me or a warrant from you." The man swipes the file from JJ's hands and Casey scoffs in disbelief and both Casey and JJ exchange a look. "Privacy issues. You understand."

"Doctor-patient privilege doesn't apply postmortem." Luke told. "I'm talking about my privacy as a small business owner with centers around the city." Smith tells. "Okay, well, we're trying to find a pattern for a killer who is overdosing patients the day after they finish treatment, and now your twelve centers might be our nexus." JJ explains.

"I highly doubt it because you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what you're investigating." The man tells and Casey furrows her brows. "And what is your theory here, doctor?" Casey questions, her voice stern as she crosses her arms.

"You're focusing on the overdose. That's a symptom. But what's underneath every decision to pick up the Martini shaker, chop out a line, tie off an arm... selfishness." All four of the agents scoff in disbelief at the man's words and all Casey wants to do is knock him out. "Addicts are selfish and though I don't hate my patients, I do hate their selfishness. And if they don't like that, they can go off to their alley and die. Because there are people here who want what we have, unlike our dear departed terminally unique Clay."

Casey can't believe the words coming out his mouth. These people were still human beings and they didn't deserve to die the way they did. Especially if they were trying to get help. All Casey could think of was Spencer. And if he was here right now, he would have none of this. Especially being an addict himself. Part of Casey was actually glad he wasn't on this case.

Smith cracks his knuckles as he looks right at Luke. "So... I think we're done here, agents."

Casey knows that her professionalism has come a long way and she knew when she had a hot head and she knew what to say and what not to say because she was now unit chief. The best thing would be to walk away. Unfortunately, Casey didn't do that.

"With all due respect, sir, a person like you shouldn't be running a place like this." Casey told. The man shrugs, "And what person would I be?"

"A person that profits over someone's addiction like it's nothing. It's wrong, conceited and illegal. I don't know what type of business you run here but we have a job to do and if somebody else dies, that blood in on your hands." Casey tells.

The man shrugs once more. "Fine by me. I'm not the one shooting them up." Before Casey could even dare to walk away, she clenches her fists and huffs. "My ex-husband is an addict. He fights hard for his sobriety every single day and for that, I'm thankful." Casey told. "My mother was also an addict and so is my father. So I would watch it with the comments unless you would like a report sent to you for verbal harassment." Casey warned.

"And respectfully, you can go to hell." With that, Casey shoulder-checks him. "Guys, let's go." JJ, Chandler and Luke follow behind.

As they go outside to the main yard, Casey shakes her head. "Smug bastard." She curses. "I think it's time to turn Garcia's spotlight on Dr. Smith. What do you think?" Luke asks and JJ nods, "Oh, hell, yeah." Chandler nods in agreement, "Don't need to ask me twice."

JJ turns her attention to a girl on a bench. "Hey, uh, give me a sec." She tells.

Casey decides to call Garcia for an update and tells her to look into Rob Smith. Luke tells Chandler and Casey he's gonna go pull the car up front and as Casey finishes up her call with Garcia, Chandler can't help but stare at Casey and she furrows her brows at him. "What?" She snaps.

"You just seemed fired up is all." Chandler stated, holding his hands up in surrender so as not to face Casey's wrath. "It's kinda hot." Casey shakes her head. "Yeah, well, I didn't mean for it to be hot."

"Well, pretty much everything you do is hot." Chandler tells. "Look, this addiction thing is pretty personal to me so I would appreciate it if you would take this seriously. I mean, God, do you think about anything else other than sex?" Casey questions and then as soon as she sees that look on his face, she wants to take it back. "My job is on the line here. There is a reason I don't want people knowing. So just... respect that."

With that, Casey joins Luke in the car and Chandler waits for JJ to finish up to avoid awkward car silence with Casey. When they come back, JJ has Clay's personal notebook in her hand and they bring it over to Tara and Dr. Wright to check it out.

Later on, Garcia called when she had viable info about Dr. Smith. "What did you find out about Dr. Robert Smith?" Casey asks. "First of all, he's not a medical doctor. He has his doctorate in business from a non-accredited online university. So, he's actually more like ex-con Rob Smith, 'cause I'm sending you his criminal record now." Garcia informs.

"I knew this guy wasn't squeaky clean. What kind of doctor wears a leather jacket?" Casey questions.

"Well, they're mostly drug and assault charges, but he did some time for manslaughter. Beat a guy to death for calling him a failure." Matt explains. "Superior complex much?" Casey questions.

"Calling him a slumlord would also work, because as I was hacking and slashing through the financial machinations of the sort-of-terrible, not-good-at-all doctor, I discovered that of our victims went to his treatment centers." Garcia explains.

"So we're dealing with someone that has a history of violence and drug abuse. He also hates addicts who don't work as hard as he does." Luke tells.

"They make him feel like a failure, just like the guy he killed." Matt stated.

"He's looking more and more like our unsub. Bring him in for questioning." Emily orders and Casey nods, tossing the file down. "Don't mind if I do." Casey nods to Matt and Luke as backup.

When they arrive, Smith is sitting in front of Molly, the girl JJ talked to earlier in a threatening manner. As soon as they opened the door, Smith turned his attention to the agents. "Rob Smith, we need you to come with us." Matt orders.

The man nods, "Okay. Let me get my coat." He stands up and walks a few steps near his desk before booking it out the back door. Luke starts chasing after him and Casey and Matt make their way to the front where Matt knocks him off his feet.

"Stay down! Don't move!" Casey warns, pointing her gun at him and pinning his shoulder between her boot and the gravel beneath him. "You're under arrest." Matt tells.

When they'd gone back to the PD, Luke and Matt had decided to question Smith on their own because they knew that if Casey did it, she'd be harsher than both of them combined and might even kill him with her bare hands. They'd see to her as a last resort.

Casey was doing some digging with Emily when Matt and Luke walked in. "Anything?" Casey asks. "Rob Smith is a con man and he doesn't give a crap about his patients, but he is not our unsub." Matt told. "So, in other words, he's just a selfish prick." Casey stated and Luke and Matt nod. "God, why can't we ever catch scumbags like him?"

"His whole business model counts on his patients relapsing." Luke told. "He doesn't offer any significant medical or therapeutic treatment. He wants them to rehab and relapse so he can charge their insurance repeatedly." Matt explained what Casey had theorized.

"He was worried that Clay and the others were writing about it in their journals." Luke said. "That's why he wanted to hide them from us."

JJ leans back in her seat. "Well, that takes motive off the table." She said. "Did we get the other victims' journals with a warrant?" Emily asks. "Yeah, we did." Matt nods.

"We need to go through them page by page. I think there's a victimology connection that we're missing." Emily stated and Casey nods, "Tara's already started."

Matt and Luke had gone back to questioning Smith with his lawyer and Tara discovered that everyone in the rehab facility had written pages of pages in their journals about the unsub. And that the unsub was tattooing broken angel wings on his body to somehow honor his victims.

"Garcia, we got your list of freelance nursing staff, but did you cross-reference credit card records with local tattoo parlors?" Casey questions, walking into the room. "Yeah, I'm doing that now. It looks like the freelancers were paid via some national traveling nurses association." Garcia told.

"Focus on temporary hires that fall in line with the rehabs Smith visits day by day. Look for overlap between the two." Rossi informs.

"Okay. I can see the matrix, people. Ah! There it is! Uh, nurse of the male variety... Douglas Knight. Eight sessions at local tattoo parlors, all within hours of each death. Here's his work and home address."

Casey nods to the rest of the team. "Great work, Pen. Copy Tara on what you found."

━━━━━━

They had successfully caught their unsub and flew back to the BAU. After hours of finishing paperwork, Casey had been the last going home tonight, at least that's what she thought.

When she hopped on the elevator, Chandler had joined her. The two hadn't spoken since Casey basically yelled at him on the case. Chandler figured it'd be best if he just kept his mouth shut to avoid getting yelled at again.

Casey looked at Chandler and realized why he was being quiet. He looked at anyone but her, she'd assumed maybe he'd want to give her space. And Casey realized that maybe she was a little harsh on him earlier.

Casey took a deep breath and closed her eyes before speaking to him. "My mother died from an overdose when I was two days old. My father chose drugs over his own daughter. Spencer was arrested with drugs in his system after almost being ten years sober. That's why I take it personal." She told. Chandler looked her way and realized she'd endured more than she deserved. For a moment, he felt for her. "But you didn't deserve my yelling at you. So, I'm sorry." She finished.

Chandler shook his head, facing towards her. "You've got nothing to apologize for. I should've been a little respectful of that." Casey shrugged, "I know you were just trying to lighten the mood. And sometimes, I can be a little mean."

"Maybe I like when you're a little mean." Chandler comments, making Casey chuckles. "Sorry." Chandler looks down as he laughs.

Casey thinks before looking back at Chandler. "Let me make it up to you. Tomorrow night, my sister invited me to dinner at her apartment with her boyfriend and our brother. I'd like for you to come join us." She figured that maybe it wouldn't hurt to invite him. And who knows? Maybe sleeping together would soon blossom into something else.

"Inviting me to family gatherings now, I see." Chandler smirks and Casey rolls her eyes jokingly. "Oh, don't feel so special, now. I'm inviting you as a friend. Think of it as getting in good with your boss." Chandler shrugs a bit, "I already thought of it that way."

"Tomorrow night. I'll pick you up at 6." Casey tells and he nods at her, "It's a date." The elevator dings and Casey walks out first but before she walks away entirely, she turns back around and kisses Chandler on the lips and then she leaves.

Chandler finds himself smiling at the ground as she walks away.

━━━━━━

Tomorrow night came and as promised, Casey picked Chandler up from his apartment. They had gone to Leah and her boyfriend, Wes' apartment. Isaac had joined them once he got off work at seven. Casey had helped Leah cook a family dinner they always made when they were all around and had news. A roasted chicken, with chicken rice and green beans.

Everyone had just finished up dinner, telling stories and whatnot and having laughs with each other. "So, Chandler, you were in the army." Wes tells, getting Chandler's attention. He nods, "I was. I was stationed over in Iraq and Alaska for two drafts. Science and Medicine along with Mechanics and Engineering were my forte." He stated.

"That must've been some experience." Isaac comments and Chandler shakes his head, "You have no idea."

Casey changes the subject and looks at her sister. "So, what's the big news, Leah?" She asks. "What big news?" Leah asks, confused.

"Come on, you invited us over, made us our favorite family dinner together, you and Wes can keep giving knowing glances." Casey points out. "Don't forget the smiles on their faces when they do so." Chandler added and Casey nods, glad somebody else sees it. "Exactly."

Wes throws his arms up in the air and chuckles out, "We didn't even say anything." Leah shakes her head. "See, this is why you can never keep a secret from profilers."

Isaac agrees, "Seriously, you guys are Sherlock Holmes' wet dream." There's a pause before he continues, "But even I'm not a profiler and I know something's up. Spill the beans."

Both Leah and Wes look at one another. "Okay." Leah says as she stands. "I guess we're doing this now." Wes nods. They stand up together. "So, you guys know how we took that trip that we saved up for Maui a few months ago?" Leah asks. Casey and Isaac nod, "Yeah, sure."

"Well, when we were there, something happened." Leah tells. "Oh, my God. You're not pregnant, are you?" Casey automatically assumes.

"Better than that." Leah tells and the couple look at one another and Leah holds her left hand up to reveal a giant ring on her third finger. Isaac and Casey's jaws drop. "We're getting married!" Wes announces.

"Oh, my God! Leah!" Casey immediately jumps out of her seat to tackle her sister in a hug. Isaac stands up and shakes Wes' hand. "Congratulations." He tells.

"Jesus, look at that rock." Casey tells, looking at the ring on her sister's finger. "Of course, I had to give my girl the best." Wes comments. Chandler stands up to shake Wes' hand as well. "Congratulations to you both." He tells.

Isaac holds his arms up. "This calls for more celebration." Casey nods, "I'll get the champagne." She knows where it's located in the cabinets.

Suddenly, Chandler's cell begins to ring in his back pocket and he picks it up to check the caller ID. "Sorry, I have to take this. I'll be right back." Casey nods, "Okay."

Chandler walks to the opposite side of the apartment where he knows everyone will be too much wrapped in Leah and Wes' engagement to check on him. When he knows he's in an area far way enough, he answers. "Hello?" He asks.

He rolls his eyes as he hears the demands. "I told you to give me more time." There's a pause. "Look, things are a little too complicated right now to do anything." Define complicated, Chandler. You're sleeping with the enemy! Chandler thought to himself. "We'll get her. You just have to give me a few weeks time."

"And I know you wanna get him back but right now, you need to let me do my job here so we can make sure the station's clear. And as for her, I'll figure something out." Chandler sighs. "A few weeks. That's all I need." He rolls his eyes once more as he runs his hand over his forehead. "I told you, I'll figure it out. Soon."

Chandler hangs up and when he turns around, he sees Leah standing right there. He freezes, worried that he's been caught. She couldn't have heard the whole conversation, could she? "Sounded important." Leah chuckled. By the way she was acting, she didn't know. But she was definitely suspicious of him now.

Chandler nods, trying to act as normal as possible. "Uh, yeah, yeah. Some things just needed to be taken care of over at Interpol." Leah nods uneasily, "Yeah. Right." Chandler walks past her and Leah is left in confusion to trust her sister's new beau.

Something told her that there just something off about him. And if she could see it before her sister, the profiler, did, then there was a problem.
