CHAPTER NINETEEN: T-BALL AND TOP-SECRET DEADLY WEBSITES !
14x03
━━━━━━
CASEY WILLOWS HAD NO IDEA HOW SHE LET HER FIVE YEAR-OLD TALK HER INTO LETTING HIM DO T-BALL. But nonetheless, Casey was a supportive mother and supported whatever Christopher wanted to do.
But only one person was more supportive of Christopher and that was his auntie, Leah. "Hey, you call that a foul? I call it self defense!" Leah shouted at the coaches as they threw up their arms in confusion towards Leah. "What are you gonna say to me now, coach?"
Leah often liked to think she was at an actual baseball game, it seemed.
"Aunt Leah!" Christopher practically scolded through gritted teeth at his aunt in embarrassment. "Leah, you're embarrassing the boy." Casey told, eating from her mayo and ham sandwich.
JJ sat beside Casey with Michael in her arms. "We should have her come to Henry's soccer games." JJ stated. "It can get old quickly." Isaac comments from beside Casey. Leah turns over to her twin. "I heard that." She tells. "Surprised you could over your own yelling." Isaac tells, earning a glare from his sister.
Casey looks over at JJ. "Sometimes I feel like a mother to three five year-olds." She stated, mentioning her other two "five year olds", her twin siblings.
"Be grateful you're not a mother to four under ten." Kristy, Matt's wife, said from beside JJ.
Her second oldest son, David, Henry and Christopher had all been in the same t-ball team so the three women practically made it a habit to sit with each other at these things.
"Hey, how's David been doing?" Casey wondered, pointing over to Kristy and Matt's son, sitting beside Christopher. "Sticking to me like glue," Kristy admitted. "He's been having a hard time since everything happened with me." Since Kristy had been held hostage about a month ago, her son, David, had been having some trouble coping with it.
Casey shrugged and nodded towards Kristy. "Can't blame the kiddo." She stated. "At least you're here for him though." Everyone looked over at Casey, noting that snipe that just came from her and who she actually aiming that towards, even Leah seemed to look back at her.
"Damn, sis." Leah commented. "Uh, was that a diss at Spencer?" JJ questioned.
"You know, every time you're at one of these games, those get thrown around like candy." Isaac tells JJ.
Casey sighs and looks at her sandwich. "Spencer hasn't been to one game of Chris's since he started T-ball." She admits. "Really? Not one?" JJ wonders.
"No. And every time I tell him he has a game, he says he can't go and then I have to break the news to Chris and he's upset about it most of the time. I mean, look at that little face." Casey points to a rather sad-looking Chris over at the bench. He's looking down at his feet, kicking around the dirt. This had been really starting to bother Casey, especially since Christopher hadn't gotten that much playing time compared to the other players on the team and since the team had lost seven of their eight games played so far. There was one more game after this one.
Kristy looks over at Casey. "And Spencer doesn't go?" She asks. "I know that it's because he doesn't like sports, but it doesn't mean he still can't come to support his son." Casey stated.
Leah's attention turns back to the field. "What strike was that? I believe the only one that struck out was your mother!" She yells.
"Leah!" Casey shouts. "Sit down!" Leah groans and takes a seat on the bench. "Alright, alright."
JJ changes the subject back to Spencer. "Do you think that maybe you should talk to Spencer about it?" She wonders and Casey nods, "I am going to, but..."
"But what?" JJ asks.
Casey takes a breath, "I'm also thinking that maybe the reason he's not coming to Chris's games is because of me. I mean, things have been just a little tense because of..." Casey stops herself, realizing no one else knew about the kiss and no one was going to know about it for as long as she lived. "Stuff. Lots of stuff." JJ gives Casey a suspicious look.
"I think talking to him might help your case here. You're never gonna get anywhere with this unless you talk to him." Kristy admits. "And trust me, with Matt, whenever we need to talk about something, we just rip the bandage." Casey nods, "I know. You're right."
Something else happens on the field and Leah leaps from her seat again. "What the hell was that?!" When the game ended, the team lost by five points. Casey assured her son that he was good no matter the fact that he never went in the games. Chris didn't care about that, he cared more about his father not showing up to his games. But he wouldn't tell his mother that.
After his game, Casey made dinner for both herself and Chris and afterwards, he decided to head up to bed where Casey would be tucking him in afterwards. "Mom?" He asked as Casey sat next to him on the bed. "Yeah?" Casey asked.
"Why doesn't Dad go to my T-Ball games?" Chris wondered and Casey knew this question would he coming soon. She had taken a deep breath and shrugged, "Well, you know T-Ball just isn't his thing."
"Didn't he play when he was my age? And didn't he play one game before I was born?" Chris asked, bringing up the baseball game Spencer played as a favor to Morgan. Casey smiled at the memory, they had just come out as a couple to their coworkers at the time.
Casey smiled, "Oh, yeah. That was a fun day. I told him to picture me—" She pause, realizing who she was just talking to him. "Me— me winning. So that would get him to focus on winning." (She actually told Spencer to picture her naked but that was besides the point).
"Anyway... your dad just doesn't like sports. He's more of a read books on the sidelines kinda guy. Maybe more of a water boy." Casey told and ran a hand through her son's hair. "Does it bother you that he doesn't go?" She wondered.
Chris shrugged, "A little bit." He admits. "I get that he's always busy but I really want him to come to my game next week. It's our last one and I want him there. Can you talk to him?" He asked.
Truth be told, Casey hadn't talked to him in a while since that talk they had a few weeks ago. Of course, it would be a 'hi' and 'bye' from that point on when Spencer would come to pick Chris up or Casey would go pick Chris up. And they didn't have to see each other at work as much because of their reinstatements from the time they'd done. So, they haven't had a full conversation in a while. And Casey didn't blame Spencer one bit for it.
"Of course I will." Casey said anyways and Chris closed his eyes and Casey thought about the conversation she would need to have with Spencer when they'd gone back to work tomorrow.
And eight hours later, the time finally came. Spencer had walked into the office and set his things down and got his coffee and that's when Casey walked up to him. "Hey, can I talk to you?" She asks.
Spencer pours his coffee into a mug with furrowed brows. "About what?" He asks. "About Chris's T-ball game." Casey answered. "Oh, did they win?" Spencer asks, acting like he's interested now.
"No, actually, they lost." Casey stated. "Like they have been for most of the season. And you'd probably know that if maybe you showed up to a game."
Her tone sounded angry and Spencer furrowed his brows. "What's with the third degree?" He wonders, throwing his hands up.
"This third degree isn't from me, it's from your son." Casey told. "And maybe a little bit from me, too." She pauses and calms herself down. "You have yet to go to one of Chris's games. And I don't really know if it's because of me and I don't really care if it is but don't take it out on him."
"I'm not taking anything out on him." Spencer tells as he walks back to his desk. "You should see his face every time you're not there. I'm just asking you to consider going." Spencer looks down. "His last game is next week. Try and show up."
With that, Casey walks back to her office and before she even has the opportunity to sit down, the team gets called in for a case.
She tells the team to come into the conference room to gather up for it after speaking with the detective. "This morning, DC Metro police reported that body parts were sent to six separate locations within the Washington Metropolitan area. Each appendage was wrapped and sealed inside its own box. In all, there were two arms with no hands, two legs with no feet, one torso cut in half but without the head. And I may like to add my immature comment I usually always add: ew." Casey explains.
"So although this unsub felt the sadistic urge to shock and awe the victims who received the boxes, he was still organized enough to withhold the parts that would have helped better identify the victim." Tara explains.
"Oh, but wait, there's more." Garcia starts. "In each box, underneath the victim pieces was an index card, and on each one, a piece of a handwritten note." She shows the index cards on the screen.
Reid begins to read from them on the screen. "'All the King's Porsches and all the King's Benz couldn't put this... bitch... back together again. Forever yours, gone postal.'" He had read the 'bitch' part quietly.
"Do we know who the boxes were sent to and how they were delivered?" Rossi asked. "Yes, the unsub used an overnight courier service called World Send, but they don't have any security footage of the drop off because that particular branch was closed yesterday due to a bit of scheduled remodeling." Garcia informed.
"So that means he doctored the tracking ID on the boxes." JJ stated. "Correct. So each of the appalling parcels were addressed and delivered to six different people, two were at home, four were at work. They range in occupations from retired teacher to taxpayer advocate. They range in ages from 23 to 68. But as you can see, what they all got in common, they're all women." Garcia explains.
"Parts of one man sent to 6 different women. What's strange is that none of the women had a missing male friend or significant other. But maybe our John Doe here's the real connection between the women, whether they know it or not." Matt told.
"Or maybe our unsub's crimes aren't exactly connected to one another in the way we would ordinarily think." Rossi stated. "Because he could be wrestling with a set of mixed motivations." Spencer added. "I think so. Separate and distinct emotional needs that he feels compelled to fulfill." Rossi nods along.
"So the death and dismemberment of the male victim would fulfill one need, the shipping of the body parts to the female victims would fulfill another." Tara stated and Luke nods, "Yeah. And what about him taunting us? I mean, I'd say that's another one of his needs."
"Well, we need to stop him before he fulfills another need. JJ, Luke, interview the women. Tara, Spence, focus on these cards in the boxes. Penelope, Matt, Casey, take a closer look at World Send and its employees." Emily directs everybody. "That leaves you and Rossi, you guys follow up on the autopsy of our John Doe." Casey agrees.
After Matt, Penelope and Casey had found what they needed to find, Matt and Casey brought it over to Spencer and Tara in the conference room. "We got something. According to World Send, in order for those boxes to be delivered, they had to be entered into the company computer system using an employee ID access code." Matt explained.
"Yeah, that's what we were thinking." Tara agreed and Casey opened up the file. "Right. So in this case, all six packages were tagged with the code assigned to Duane Vann. And he's the manager in charge at the branch that was closed for remodeling." She explained.
"Do we have a home address?" Spencer asked and Matt shows it on the file to Tara. "Yeah, it's right here."
"All right, I've already coordinated with SWAT. I'll let Emily know we're headed down there." Casey told and the four walked in a group and before they could head out to the elevator, Garcia stopped them and rushed towards them with her laptop in her hand. "Oh, my god. You guys. Guys! Guys, this is... this is happening."
Garcia turns her screen to her team members of a man in a mask standing over a man strapped down to a board. "All right, slow down." Matt tells. "What's going on?" Casey asks.
"I found gone postal online, and he's live-streaming a murder." Garcia tells. "What social network is this?" Spencer questions. "It's not a conventional network. I put out a digital marker for 'gone postal' and I found it on a website called XXXANADU.xtz.cu." She explains.
"Xtz.cu? What the hell is that?" Tara questions. "It's a lower level domain." Garcia tells. "It's the dark net." Casey added. "Is there any way to locate where this live-stream's coming from?" Matt asks.
"I'm running a digital trace now. Uh, it's with the IP address. Ok, according to the IP address, the computer's on a Wi-Fi network somewhere around the 1400 block of Westerfall Springs Avenue." Garcia informs.
Matt reads off the file again. "Our suspect, Duane Vann's address is 1457 Westerfall Springs Avenue."
"SWAT's already on its way." Casey nods and the four head to the elevators.
By the time the four arrived, SWAT had already been there and ready for takedown. They covered all perimeters as they entered the house, following behind SWAT. The first thing they heard was yelling from upstairs. Casey nudged Matt and decided to check upstairs with a SWAT member following behind them as Tara and Spencer checked downstairs.
Casey and Matt turned the corner and found a long blood track stain leading to a bedroom. The man's screams continued and Casey noted to the blood smeared on the door. Matt barged in but they had found nothing but a recording of a man screaming and two heads of men perched on each side of the bed frame. It was a gruesome sight.
"Clear." Matt announced and Spencer and Tara followed upstairs as the video started over. Casey had found something peeking from under laptop it was playing from and found another index card. 'Made you look, bitches. I remain GP'. It said.
"This video stream isn't going out live. It's on a continuous loop." Matt pointed out to Spencer and Tara. "Who knows when it was recorded."
"It was too easy." Casey commented, holding up the card. "Son of a bitch played us." Tara added. "He did," Spencer nodded. "But somewhere out there is another male victim and who knows how many other women who are about to get a terrible surprise."
The very next morning, Casey had called Emily to inform her the new index card they found, next to the two heads. Luke, Rossi, Emily and JJ all gathered that next morning in the conference room as Matt, Spencer, Casey and Matt remained at the house but were added to the call."
"This morning more body parts were delivered to four more women, and this time even though he didn't send any handwritten messages, our unsub wasn't shy about including everything else, including the male victim's head." Emily explained.
"Which we have been able to identify as Dr. Nicolas Kauffmann. He's a prominent D.C. psychiatrist." JJ added. "Metro police are at his house now. They say there are definite signs of forced entry, but no signs of any violence anywhere in the house." Luke told.
"And the unsub apparently made his getaway in Dr. Kauffmann's Range Rover. We've got a BOLO out on it." Rossi adds. "We're also in the process of accessing all of his patient records from the last 16 years." JJ added as well.
"Now, there were no courier labels on these boxes, so it looks as though he delivered them himself." Emily told.
"The one index card he did leave behind here reads, 'Made you look, bitches. I remain GP.'" Casey read from the notecard.
"You know, I'd say that explicit shift in the referential designation of that word "bitch" from the first male victim to now members of law enforcement could actually be signaling the start of a sublimation of motives." Spencer explained.
"Meaning you think that this spectacle of taunting the police might become more important to him than his actual choice of victim?" JJ asked.
"I do. And I don't think it's just about taunting the police. I think it's also about the unsub's need to capture the public's attention." Spencer nodded.
"Has the M.E. ID'd your victims?" Emily asked. "Yes," Tara answered. "They were Duane Vann and Rory Stevenson. They were married about three months ago." Matt adds, "Forensics is telling us that the scene here has been totally staged."
"They weren't killed in the house?" Luke asked. "No, neither killed nor dismembered, and there's no sign of forced entry, which means that Rory and Duane must have let him in. Like Rossi said, he probably knew them well, and then he used the paralytic to disable them." Tara explained.
"Which we have been able to identify as rocuronium bromide." JJ stated. "It's a neuromuscular blocker typically used in anesthesia." Spencer explained the scientific definition. "I think that fact locks down this guy's medical background, but where's this guy's operating theater?" Matt wonders.
"Right. The Vann and Kauffmann homes are only the secondary crime scenes. We still need to find the primary." Rossi tells. "So we need to take a closer look at the video he posted of Dr. Kauffmann's murder online." Luke tells.
"Yeah. We should also see what else Garcia's been able to find out about the website that he used. Its history could help us nail down the profile." Emily decides.
After discovering the owner of the XXXANADU site, Galina Kadlec, they brought her in for questioning and they had given their profile. Casey had rejoined the team in the office as Luke had gotten off the phone.
"D.C. Metro police just found Dr. Kauffmann's car. It was parked near 14th and T in the Cardozo area. Forensics is processing it now." Luke explained. "Any other cars reported stolen in that area tonight?" Casey asked. "None so far." Luke shook his head. "Well, he's on foot, maybe because Cardozo's where his next victim lives." Matt figured.
"And we just found a connection between the male victims." Garcia tells as both her and Spencer walk into the room. "Went through Dr. Kauffmann's patient records. It turns out 3 years ago a patient was referred to him by the name of Emmanuel Rask." Spencer explains.
"Meanwhile, I was doing some research on Duane Vann's social media, and around three years ago, he seemed to have a pretty serious romantic relationship with that very same Emmanuel Rask." Garcia explains.
"What do we know about Rask?" Emily asked. "Child prodigy in music, valedictorian of his high school. He won a scholarship to Hallridge university, where he was later accepted to the medical school." Spencer explained. "From which he was expelled?" Casey asked.
"Oh, yeah. For behavior deemed grossly inappropriate by the medical school's code of conduct." Garcia nodded.
"The administration discovered that Rask had been making crush videos." Spencer stated and Casey furrowed her brows and Luke asks, "What's a crush video?"
"Crushing is a paraphilia where someone's sexual aroused by the crushing of objects with a human body. Typically it's the foot, and the items are usually food, but in Rask's case, they were small animals." Spencer dropped the ball and Casey scrunches her face up. "And there's my lunch coming right back up."
"Was he charged with animal cruelty?" JJ wondered and Casey just hoped the answer was yes. "No. They didn't have a chance to do that because Rask went after the student he thought dimed him out. He was convicted of aggravated assault. He was sentenced to six years in prison. He was served two, good behavior. And he was released on probation four days ago." Garcia informed.
"Does he have any family in the area?" Matt asked. "His father, Alonso committed su1c1de 10 years ago, but his mother Janel currently lives in Hillcrest Heights." Spencer informs.
"Luke and I can go talk to her." JJ offers and Casey nods to her as they exit the room.
"Dr. Kauffmann noted how difficult it was for him diagnose Rask because he exhibited all the attention-seeking tendencies of a histrionic personality while simultaneously flaunting an exaggerated sense of self worth consistent with being a narcissist." Spencer explained.
"Well, those two personality types are usually inconsistent with each other, which means he's been struggling with these mixed motivations for a long time." Emily explains.
"And if his relationship with Duane Vann was as important to him as I think it was, then learning that Vann got married while he was in prison could have trigged his rage." Casey added.
"So Rask had to have been planning this for a while now. And he knew he'd need some help, and that's why he'd reach out to a kindred spirit like Galina Kadlec." Matt suggested. "Yeah, but I can't figure out how they communicated with each other." Garcia tells.
"And you probably won't, but what you can do right now is see which men from Rask's past live in or around the Cardozo area." Emily stated.
When the time came, they found their unsub, Rossi stopping him before killing another victim. The unsub knew who Rossi was due to his books and the fact that he and Galina Kaldec bonded over them. When he was arrested, he laughed like a maniac.
Most of the team had been gathered in Rossi's office for a drink after the fact as the news of Rask's arrest played on the screen. JJ had gone home to her family and so did Matt, leaving only part of the team in Rossi's office. Casey took another swig of cider as she leaned on Rossi's desk, next to him.
"You know, it was about twenty years ago. I was having dinner with Jason Gideon, and I told him I was thinking about leaving the BAU, maybe write a book, you know, about our work. But he cautioned me." Rossi started and Casey furrowed her brows as Spencer asked: "About what?"
"About whether or not a book like that would do more harm than good." Rossi tells.
"Well, with respects, I disagree." Tara voices. "I can see why he would think that, but... sometimes my uncle Gideon never really knew what the hell he was talking about. Trust me, I lived with the guy." Casey told, truthfully.
"Dave, your books have provided an invaluable resource to everyone, not to mention law enforcement." Spencer agreed. "And they're just kick ass to read." Luke added.
"Thank you." Rossi told. "But... actually, that was kind of to Gideon's point. He was concerned that by telling these stories, it might create a prurient interest that would be more about consuming pornography."
"What did you say?" Emily wondered.
"I didn't have an answer." Rossi told.
"Well, if I could add, your answer could be that no matter the case and no matter the point you're trying to make, you keep writing. In the long run you could help somebody." Casey told, taking another sip of her cider.
━━━━━━
The next week had finally come and it was the day of Chris's last t-ball game of the season before playoffs. Casey had sent Spencer the info regarding the game but she honestly figured he'd most likely be a no-show. But Chris was determined to see his dad show up. He wanted him to. And he hoped for it. Wished for it.
Casey's heart broke as she watched Chris look around as he sat on the bench. Leah, was of course, screaming at the team's coaches as well as the opposing team's and Casey was starting to wonder if maybe Chris wasn't getting any playing time because of his righteous and noisy aunt. "You think Spencer's gonna show?" JJ asked Casey and the woman shrugged, "I'm hoping. Just look at Chris, he's looking for him."
"Hey, Reid!" One of the coaches shouted, getting Chris's attention. "You're up, buddy!"
Chris gulped. He'd only done this one other time. The game was tied 9-9. His hits would determine if their team would win or not and if they would be going to the playoffs. Now, that was on Chris's shoulders.
Casey watched as he grabbed his bat from the bat stack. "Oh, my God! He's going in! My baby's going in!" Casey nearly shouted, causing the family to cheer Chris on. "You got this, baby!"
Chris stepped up to the plate and held his bat up, ready to hit any baseballs coming towards him. He got in his stance as Casey cheered him on. When the ball came towards him, he tried to hit it but — "Strike one!"
"Come on, Chris!"
"You got this, buddy!"
Even Henry and David were cheering Chris on from the sidelines.
Chris threw the bat again. "Strike two!"
"Come on, baby! You got this!" Chris turns to his mother and then from the corner of his eye, he sees someone he didn't think he'd ever see at one of these games. His dad, in a button-up shirt, khakis and a hat perched on his head. Spencer smiled as his son once he'd seen he saw him.
Casey furrowed her brows when she saw Chris looking over somewhere and then looked to where Chris was looking and had seen Spencer standing there, not in his usually attire and she took a breath of relief — seeing him coming here for their son and his t-ball game.
Chris's smile grew large as he spotted his dad. "You got this, Chris! Don't think too much about it!" Spencer shouted to his son and Chris nodded at his dad and grew more energy to bat. It mattered that he could make his dad proud right here and now. (But Spencer would be proud nonetheless).
Chris told that little voice that was telling him he couldn't do it to shut up and held his bat up. And as the ball was thrown, he hit it and it went flying. Chris watched as it flew far inside the field. He stood there but everyone was yelling: "Run! Run! Run!"
Chris then saw the opportunity to run the the first base and noticed the boys struggling to get the ball and headed to second base. "Yes, Chris! Yes!" He heard his mother cheering from his distance and that egged him on to reached third base and as the opposing team tossed the ball over to get Chris out, he had slid right into home base.
"Safe!"
The team cheered and hoisted Chris on their shoulders and pumped him up. "Chris! Chris! Chris!" They cheered as Chris high-fived everyone.
"That's my boy!" Casey yelled, making it known. She sounded even louder than Leah.
After that, Chris had grabbed his backpack and his goody-bag the team always received after games and began to relay the details to his mom about how he felt with the adrenaline. "Did you see when I ran past the first base? I thought for sure I wasn't gonna make it. But then — whoosh!"
They made it over to the entrance and there was Spencer, hands in his pockets as he waited for Chris. "Dad!" The little boy dropped his backpack and ran over to his dad and Spencer knelt to his son's level and gave him a big hug. "Chris! Hey, good job today, buddy!" He told.
"I knew you were gonna come today!" Chris pulled away from the hug. "I knew it in my bones!" Spencer chuckles, "I saw you out there! I'm so proud of you." He tells.
Seeing Chris's mother behind him, Spencer stands up and Casey walks forward. "Fancy seeing you here." Casey tells and Spencer nods, "Well, I couldn't miss this." They exchange a glance and Casey looks down at her son.
"Chris, how 'bout you meet me at the car? I gotta talk to your dad for a second." Casey tells.
"Can we get victory ice cream after?" Chris asks.
"Yes, of course, we can get victory ice cream." Casey smiles.
"Chocolate with sprinkles?" Chris added.
"All the sprinkles in the world." Casey adds.
"Can Dad come?" Chris asked and both Spencer and Casey exchange a look. Casey decides to speak after seeing Spencer open his mouth, but not knowing what to say. "Uh, let me talk to him and I'll let you know what the answer is." Casey tells and Chris nods, "Okay."
When Chris trudges back to the car with his backpack nearly holding him down, Casey approaches Spencer. "Hey." Spencer started, not knowing really where to start. "I'm glad you came. It really made his day." Casey stated.
"I'm sorry I haven't come before. I just..." Spencer thinks and then decides to speak. "When I did t-ball and my dad was the coach, he never really made it fun. I never really wanted to be on the team in the first place. I think he figured it would've been some type of bonding experience but it only drew us apart. I'm just worried I'm gonna turn into that for Chris. I didn't want him to push me away because I would've made it less fun for him." Spencer looks down as he speaks. It made sense to Casey why he didn't show up now. And of course it had something to do with his dad.
No matter how many times Casey had to assure Spencer was a good dad, there was always that little voice in the back of his mind doubting himself. And when Chris came out a boy, he couldn't help but think that maybe he'd screw up with him but when Casey brought this up about how he hasn't gone to any of Chris's games, he knew he had the chance to be there for him and to make right what his father had done wrong. He'd be supportive of Chris, no matter what. And he knew... he was a better father than his own father would ever be.
"You know he's only ever played one other game in this entire season?" Casey started. "This was his second game he ever did play. And he never really cared about going in to bat because all that mattered was that he had someone cheering him on. Every single game. And if we had cases, I'd let Leah and Isaac do it. All that mattered was that somebody was here for him. Which is why I made the effort to know he had someone here. And I'm not blaming you. I'm actually really glad you came today. It made him happy." Casey told truthfully.
"So why don't you come with us to go and get ice cream? I know he'd really want it." Casey finished and Spencer nodded, liking that Casey wanted some type of normalcy, for their son. "I'd like that." He said.
