CHAPTER TWELVE: YOU'RE THE BOSS NOW !
13x17
━━━━━━
FIRST DAY ON THE JOB AS UNIT CHIEF WAS NOT WHAT CASEY WILLOWS WOULD'VE EXPECTED. After being reinstated and getting the same treatment Spencer had gotten from the director of the BAU, Casey was back and ready for her first case as unit chief.
She straightened herself in front of the bathroom mirror in the office, taking a deep breath and smoothed down her button-up blouse. It was crazy to think that one day, she was in jail and the next she was the unit chief of the BAU. Not many people experience so much change in one day.
After her visit to the bathroom, she headed back to her desk and sat down. She'd soaked up these moments at her desk and would never take them for granted again. "No office yet?" Luke asked from afar, getting the attention of her other teammates at their desks.
"And give up my spot at my desk? No way. I've had this thing for years." Casey tells, running hand through the wood of the desk. "I could never take Derek's office or Hotch's office. Those are off-limits."
JJ then chimed in, "Hey, a great unit chief needs an office." She told. "Well, a great unit chief should deserve one. I feel like I haven't earned it yet." Casey stated. "Haven't earned it yet? Casey, you deserve an office of your own." JJ told.
"I know, but... it feels weird." Casey admits. "It's just like yesterday I was coming through those doors with your guys' coffee."
"Well, those days are long over." Spencer told. "From now on, you're calling the shots." JJ adds and Casey takes a breath and hopes she can be good at this.
"Everyone, we have a case." Emily tells as she heads towards the conference room. JJ and Casey exchange a look as she gets up from her seat. "My biggest concern is what's gonna happen to Emily now that I'm unit chief." Casey stated.
After Emily had handed over the position to Casey, Casey wondered if Emily was even going to stay at the BAU at this point. Tara, Luke, Matt, Casey and Spencer all look at JJ as she speaks, "Well, don't repeat this, but... she is talking about going back to Interpol in London."
"You're kidding." Casey's jaw drops. Was this the reason why Emily turned her over to unit chief? "She's thinking about it, she didn't say if she was gonna go through with it or not." JJ explained. "That's insane, we need her." Spencer told.
"Well, now that Casey's unit chief, she has all the more reason to go back. Doesn't mean she should." Tara stated. "I don't even know why she's considering it." Casey told.
With that, Casey and the rest of the team head towards the conference room as Garcia presents their case. "OK, OK. And by OK, I mean the abbreviation of the great state of Oklahoma, 'cause everything I'm gonna say now is not OK." Garcia starts.
"The unsub we are looking for killed last week in Colorado and then again last night in Oklahoma." Garcia informs. "Big mistake," Rossi tells. "Crossing state lines gives us jurisdiction."
"Attacking in two states is ambitious. Maybe he's a truck driver or has other work in the area?" Tara wonders. "I can check the highway serial killer database." Garcia offers.
"So our latest victim, Mark Wilson, 35, was beaten to death in his home, like our first victim, Sam Franklin." Emily stated. "They were both hard-working Midwestern men. Both homes were robbed, and you know that super-sensitive side of your mouth part here?" Garcia points to the corner of her mouth. "On both of them, it was cut."
Everyone looks down at their files. "Are they smiling?" Rossi questions. "How did he do that?" JJ questions. "That's... disturbing." Casey comments. "That's awful." Spencer adds, closing the file.
"This wasn't about inflicting more pain. I mean, they were already dead. He was compelled to do this." Tara stated.
"He's got a type. Strong married men with kids. It could be a surrogate." Luke tells. "He's got patricidal tendencies, shows power-assertive behavior." Matt nods.
"At first glance, he feels like a family annihilator attacking the home, but he's not killing the whole family." Rossi points out. "And he chooses to destroy the heads of household without an audience." Casey adds.
"There could be some mercy in him after all." JJ suggests. "Well, that might be true with Sam Franklin, but with Mark Wilson, his seven-year-old son Dylan saw the whole thing." Garcia told and everyone in the room shook their heads at the thought. The ones that had children took it to heart.
"Oh, no." Matt comments under his breath. "Oh, the poor boy." Casey shakes her head, she couldn't even imagine Christopher witnessing something like that. "Is he talking?" Matt asked.
"Well, he was, but not anymore. It's unclear what he saw, but he says his dad was killed by a clown." Garcia stated and Casey shudders. If you couldn't remember now, remember that Casey had a fear of clowns. She hated them.
"Maybe the unsub wore a disguise." JJ suggested. "Or he's projecting something he fears. There's a word, even though it's not recognized by any dictionary or psychology manual, for the excessive fear of clowns... coulrophobia." Spencer explains.
"Ugh, I hate clowns. But, whatever he saw, we need to find out if it was real or perceived." Casey stated and everyone looked towards her as they all closed their files. Everyone stared at her and waits for her next move and Casey is confused until she realizes why they're staring at her. "Wha—? Oh! W-Wheels up in 20."
Casey mentally punches herself in the face and decides to get ready for the jet ride. She'd separated the team into groups. Matt and Spencer would be going to check in with the little boy at the hospital, JJ and Tara would be investigating the crime scenes while Luke had gone to the ME. Casey had paired herself with Emily and Rossi since they knew more about her leadership role and could be there for her when she needed to take care of stuff.
The chief of police met with the three as he began to explain what he had going at the moment. "I got officers searching pawn shops in the area but came up empty. Sorry if you get a few stares. Last time the feds were here was when they caught McVeigh." The chief explains.
"We got you set up over here." He brings them to a small conference room. "Thank you." Casey stated. "Yeah, I saw what this psycho did to the vic's mouth. I figured it wasn't his first time. So that's when I ran it through ViCAP, and it was time to call you." The chief explains.
"Are you the one who responded to the Wilson residence?" Rossi asks. "Yeah," the chief nods. "And, of course, I found Dylan Wilson hiding in his bedroom."
"He called 911?" Casey asks. "Yeah, but not until the sun came up. I'm sure he was too afraid to make a sound." The chief stated. "Time of death was midnight. He was in that house with his dead father for hours. No wonder he isn't talking." Emily told.
After speaking with Garcia, they had discovered the unsub's signature was carving the smiley faces into doors of the houses the unsub robbed and then escalated onto people. She'd sent off the addresses of houses their unsub robbed and most of them were off the interstate. He had connections to the towns.
Luke, JJ and Tara had come back and they'd talked about what they'd found. "Looks like a simple plan. First hit houses in small towns and keep moving." Luke said. "Not too bright to leave a calling card announcing how many houses they've robbed." Rossi stated.
"Well, the unsub didn't start out looking for blood on his hands, so what changed him?" JJ wondered. "We should focus on his first kill. Sam Franklin from Campo, Colorado. Worked in a warehouse, he had a weekend shift while his family was in Denver." Emily explained.
"Any speculation as to what he was doing the night he was killed?" JJ questioned. "Well, his wife claims that he called her on his way home from work.It was about midnight. He told her he was almost T-boned, and the driver lost his mind on him. She said he was a bit shaken, which wasn't like him." Casey explained.
"Did he say a clown was driving?" Rossi asked. "He did not," Emily said. "Which is the first thing you would say if that's what you saw."
"Okay, so do we think a chance encounter led to murder?" JJ wondered. "Maybe. Aggravated lethal road rage mentality fits our unsub's profile." Emily told.
"What about Mark Wilson?" Tara asked. "The house was already broken into when he got home."
"Yeah, it looks like the unsub's moving south along small state roads." Luke told.
"Given the accelerated timeline, his need to leave a signature behind, it feels like he's on a mission." JJ stated.
Spencer had called Casey with news that he had gotten Dylan to draw a picture of the unsub and it was a children's drawing of a clown. He sent the photo over to everyone on the team and had him on speaker as he explained. "Dylan definitely saw a clown."
"The level of detail in the costume suggests something precise, which makes me feel like the face would most likely be hand-painted versus some kind of mass-distributed mask." Spencer explained. "Makes sense, since the ME found greasepaint under the latest victim's nails." JJ stated.
"This is such a specific disguise. This unsub must have an obsession." Tara concludes. "It says a lot that he went into Mark Wilson's house with this makeup on him. I mean, it's like an alter-ego." Luke said. "That disguise could be helping him find confidence. Won't be surprised if he starts a spree." Rossi told.
With that, Casey had suggested everyone get some rest since everyone needed their energy to catch this guy. Casey had played it off like she'd gone back to the hotel with everyone else but she'd stayed back at the office with a cup of coffee with a side of an energy drink right next to it.
Casey had been doing a lot of digging within the last few hours, dozing off every thirty minutes when it reached a new hour and she'd set an alarm clock for getting up for each of those hours. When she'd looked over the drawing again around 3am, the door opened and Rossi had deja vu as he saw Casey sitting at one of the chairs. When Rossi had walked in, she panicked and then took a deep breath.
"Weren't you the one that told everyone to go and take a rest?" Rossi wondered and Casey sighed, "Rossi, I thought you were coming in to tell me there was another victim." She leaned back in her seat and Rossi saw what this was. He'd seen it in Morgan after Hotch had him take over when Haley was in WITSEC with Jack.
"I don't know if I can do this." Casey stated. "Casey, don't say that—" Rossi tried. "I don't know how Morgan did it when he took over for Hotch. Hell, I don't know how Hotch did this full-time. How did Emily do it? And now, everyone's expecting so much more of me. And I'm afraid I'm gonna let them down." Casey explained.
Rossi took a seat next to Casey. "Kiddo, I don't know if you realize this but you are ready for this job whether you think so or not. The Casey I know wouldn't be questioning her skills." Casey tilted her head to Rossi. "Clearly, you don't know me at all, Rossi. I am the queen of overthinking." She jokes.
"Yeah, I thought that maybe you wouldn't mention it." Rossi joked. "My point is, the first day jitters happen. It's not everyday that you become the boss. But you've got Emily to teach you the ropes." Rossi told and Casey shook her head. "And if I lose Emily to London? Who am I gonna have teaching me to ropes then?"
"Well, who do you think taught Emily?" Rossi questioned and Casey feigned thinking. "Hotch?" She joked as Rossi threw a joking irritated face her way and Casey chuckled.
"There's that smile," Rossi pointed out. "I know you're unit chief and you looked up to Hotch a lot but it doesn't mean you gotta be exactly like him." He joked. "Nah," Casey said. "I'll be better." Her lips twitched to a smirk, indicating that she was joking.
The chief of police then walks into the room. "There's been another murder." Casey sighs in defeat before deciding to call JJ and Matt to head over to the crime scene.
Matt and JJ had discovered that this wasn't work for one unsub, they were dealing with two unsubs. Casey called everyone in and delivered their profile and the chief of police told them two people dressed as clowns were spotted in a cemetery but it turned out to be some lonely dudes, looking for a little thrill for life. Later on, their unsubs had struck again, this time, during broad daylight.
Casey sent Matt over to take a look at the crime scene. "The owner is in critical condition, took a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Now, it looks like they fought, but the unsubs got scared off." Matt explained.
"Nothing stolen?" Rossi asked. "No, no. They didn't make it past the threshold." Matt said. "You said there was some kind of security." Emily stated. "Yeah. I'm working on getting that footage now. Call you back." Matt hung up.
"These guys have remained low-tech so far. They haven't chosen houses with security systems." Tara told as Casey put her phone down. "Choosing this house, especially in the daylight, it's a risk." JJ stated. "They're in a hurry."
"Maybe they're finally getting out of town and they're sloppy about it." Rossi said. "Then they'll be more haphazard now that we'll have images of them." JJ stated and Casey's phone rang again. She checked the caller ID and saw that Spencer Reid was calling.
"Hey, Reid." Casey greeted, putting him on speaker. "Great news. Dylan is talking and he's remembering more details. He said the unsub was wearing denim and smelled like horses." Spencer explained.
"That's oddly specific, but it's good that he's talking." Casey stated. "If I brought him in to the station, I think it might help with his healing." Spencer said. "That's a great idea. Hey, hold on. Luke just walked in."
Casey held the phone up so Spencer could hear what Luke was saying. "So, the ME confirmed that the grease under the victim's fingernails is a professional-grade stage makeup." Luke explained. "Stage makeup?" Casey questioned.
"Doesn't seem like that would be easy to find. So they're not amateurs." Rossi said. "Well, psychologically, most clowns believe it's not just a job, it's who they are." Spencer stated. "That's a problem, considering circuses are going out of business." Tara stated.
"All right, Matt just sent over the security footage." JJ said. "Spence, I'll forward it to you." Emily and Casey look over Tara's shoulders at the tablet and see their dominant unsub fighting the latest victim.
"See, now, faced with a surprise, these guys are incredibly unsophisticated." Emily told. "And no surprise the submissive's instinct is flight, the dominant's is fight." Rossi stated.
"If they grew up in this clown culture, these could be the roles they've always played." Tara suggests. "So maybe they haven't left the area because they found some kind of circus work here." Casey stated and added Garcia onto the call. "Hey, Garcia?"
"Little boy is talking again? Thank the stars." Garcia starts. "Yes. He's made some progress. So have we." Emily tells. "Can you cross the geo-profiles from the initial crimes in Colorado and Oklahoma, see if any traveling circuses or carnivals went through those towns?" Casey questions.
"I love a carnival. If it wasn't for the whole nefarious people are probably working there, this would be a most enjoyable search. Nefarious ruins everything. I'll hit you back." Garcia explains and then hangs up.
When Garcia finally had something, she called back. "Once a Ringling Bros. closed, a lot of the smaller ones folded, too. But it turns out, this was a huge family business. Generations born and raised in this world. It's dying off. I don't really have anything to offer you." Garcia explains.
"Okay, well, look, think about their timeline. They're wearing denim, they have made-up faces, smelling like horses." Emily explains and Casey then wonders something and it's written on her face. Rossi turns to Casey. "You got something to share with the class?" He asks.
"What if it's less about wearing the masks as a forensic countermeasure and more about convenience?" Casey questions and Emily and Rossi look at her. "I mean, what if they just finished some kind of gig close by? They could be clowns at a rodeo."
"Fair maiden, have I complimented you as of late on your assertive yet loving way of pointing out paths I don't think to go down?" Garcia questions. "No, but you haven't called me 'fair maiden' in a while." Casey states. "Oh, save it. You're still Blondie to me." Garcia tells.
There's a pause. "Oh, wow. There's a whole circuit. Big deal things at civic centers, smaller ones, too. There were a whole bunch last week in Colorado where our first victim was killed, and there's one scheduled tonight in Guymon. I'm sending you the info now."
Casey had sent JJ and Matt over to Guymon and they'd discovered their unsubs were brothers — The Capilanos. They were banned from working at the circuit nearby and related the information back to the rest of the team, especially about where to find them. Garcia helped Matt and JJ find where they needed to go and then Casey and Emily did digging on the Capilano brothers.
They'd entered their conference room, faced with the rest of the team. "As expected, Sal and Tony Capilano have only known the circus life. After a slow death of the circus, they lost their jobs for good a few months ago." Casey explained.
"If it was all they knew, losing their work was like losing their identity." Tara told. "Added up to one hell of a stressor." Rossi nods, "As if they needed any more, it's just like we thought. Dad was an abusive drunk who killed their mom, then abandoned them. They were raised by their work family after that."
"They were orphans, just like their victims' kids." Luke adds. "Their circus was never thriving but held to traditions. Tony was a beloved clown a la the classic 1950s, but Sal Capilano never wanted that life. He was a daredevil, wanted to be like his dad." Spencer explained.
"Sal's daredevil outlet dries up, but he's still chasing that adrenaline rush. After they were fired, he started killing surrogates for their father." Emily concluded.
━━━━━━
When Matt and JJ finally caught Sal and Tony, they were of course, having their share of an extent full of sibling rivalry. A gun was involved, to say the least but no trigger was pulled.
Sal and Tony were arrested for their crimes and Tony's wife and son had been confused about this whole matter, unaware of the crimes the brothers committed. Casey was currently talking with her as Spencer sat with Dylan and his mother.
Spencer had noticed Tony's timid son, Mikey, approaching the table to Dylan, since he was the only other little boy around. "Do you want to color?" Dylan asked and Mikey nods, "Sure." Spencer stands from his seat and offers it over to Mikey and the boys exchange introductions to one another. Casey smiles a little at the scene. Two little boys, both lost their fathers in the span of a few days.
"How long is Tony gonna be away?" Diana, Tony's wife, asked Casey and Casey crossed her arms as she faced the woman, wanting to be truthful to her. "Depends." She admits.
Tears fill Diana's eyes and she sighs as she looks towards her son, drawing with his new friend. "Oh. This, with Mikey, you know, these past seven years have gone by so fast. And even if Tony's gone only a year, it's gonna seem like a lifetime." Casey knew what that was like. "You know, Tony wouldn't hurt anyone, and he didn't. It was all Sal. His entire life Sal has caused trouble, and now Tony's gonna get punished, too."
Casey nods at the woman. "Believe it or not, I understand what you're going through. And I had a little boy to look after on my own. I'm not gonna lie to you, it's gonna be painful at times. And a day feels like years. But the one thing you can do is carry on for him." Casey motions to the little boy sitting next to Dylan. "I'm sorry I don't have better advice." She tells.
Diana shakes her head, but she understands. Matt exits from one of the rooms and approaches Diana and she turns to him. "Hey. Tony wants to talk to you and Mikey." Diana takes a deep breath and wipes her tears. "Yeah. Yeah. Hey, Mikey, buddy." She calls for her son and Mikey says bye to his friend.
Casey decides to follow Matt and Diana with Mikey into the interrogation room Tony was taken in. Tony is standing when he sees his wife and son. "Hey." He said. He kneels down to his son's level. "I'm so sorry, buddy." Tony has tears in his eyes as he speaks.
"I gotta go away for a little while, but you and your mom are gonna go have fun in Florida." Tony tells but Diana immediately denies, "No, we're gonna stay right here or wherever you go."
"It's just gonna hold you back." Tony tells as Mikey walks towards the table in the room, leaving his parents to discuss. "What are you saying?" Diana asks as Tony stands to face his wife.
Tony keeps his voice low as he speaks, "I could do five, ten years for this, maybe more. He'll be in high school by then. And I don't want him to see me like this again." He holds his handcuffed hands up. "You just make sure that he doesn't forget me." He chokes out.
Tony turns towards his son as he's blowing on a balloon. Mikey blows up the balloon and Tony smiles to his son with tears in his eyes. "Hey!" He gets down on his knees. "That's it, buddy. You got this."
Mikey goes to hug his father as Tony's laughs turn into cries. "I'm so proud of you." Tony tells his son and Casey didn't even realize the tear streaming down her face.
The scene in front of her reminded her of when Spencer was arrested and how he had to tell Chris he was going away. It was weird how identical it seemed, of course, different circumstances. Matt had noticed the tears in Casey's eyes and placed a hand on her shoulder but Casey shook it off. "Excuse me." She tells and exits the room.
Casey somehow found her way to the entrance of the PD and sat at one of the steps as she bawled her eyes out. She cried, remembering just how much everything hurt. And how she'd associated it with her being in jail. And thanked the gods that her own son never had to see her like that.
Of course, the one person that noticed her exit had been the one person she just didn't want to see right now. Spencer stood at the doorway of the PD and watched as Casey's back was turned to him and her back bounced up and down as she sobbed. He knew why she was crying. He wanted to go up to her and tell her everything was gonna be okay, that he was here. But he couldn't. And Casey wouldn't have wanted that.
Spencer decided that it was best to leave Casey alone for a minute because he promised to give her her space. And he was gonna honor his promise, no matter how much it hurt.
━━━━━━
The jet ride home was smooth-sailing. Nearly everyone decided to sleep most of this case off but the only person that was still awake and probably needed the most sleep was Casey. She looked outside at the clouds and the windows. That always seemed to comfort her. She sat at one of the individual seats and looked around the jet.
Spencer was sleeping at his designated spot on the couch, Rossi, JJ and Emily were sleeping on the chairs. She then noticed she wasn't the only person awake. The other people awake had been Tara, Luke and Matt. Matt was listening to music, Luke was getting coffee and Tara was reading a book.
Just as she figured maybe sleeping for a little would help, a voice chirped up. "So, first day on the job, boss." Luke stated as he sat in front of Casey. "How you feeling?" He wondered and Casey takes a breath, "Like I shouldn't be called 'boss'." She jokes.
"You know, I never would've thought that I'd cry my first day on the job." Casey told, admittedly as she fiddles with her fingers in her lap. "When I saw... Tony with his son and his wife... I thought of Spencer." She admits quietly. "And what he went through. And then, I thought about my experience. And how I was lucky enough that Chris never saw me like that." Casey sniffled.
"I'm happy that I'm unit chief, I am, but... what if it was too soon?" Casey had always compartmentalized better than most people, it was a great asset yet strong weakness. Casey often disassociated from her experience in jail. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. A lot happened within two weeks. Stuff she wasn't ready to talk about with anyone yet.
Luke read through her like a book. "I don't know what happened to you in there. I know it was bad, it had to have been difficult. But you're out. You're here. You're doing something nobody would've expected. Sometimes, the good has to outweigh the bad. And this... is a whole lot of that good." Luke tried to make her feel better and Casey knew that the good had to outweigh the bad somehow.
"I guess you're right," Casey told. "You know, I spent so many years calling people 'boss'. I never thought that day would come for me." She told. "Well, you are the boss now." Luke joked and Casey smiles a bit and Matt sits next to Luke in front of Casey.
"So... big fear of clowns, huh?" Matt teased and Casey furrowed her brows. "Reid may have nonchalantly mentioned your fear of clowns down at the hospital."
"Of course he did." Casey sighed. "And I'm not scared of clowns. I'm just... not particularly fond of them." She clears up.
Tara chimes in to the conversation, looking something up on her phone. "Oh, so, you're not fond of this?" A photo of a clown pops up on her screen and Casey holds a hand up, looking away. "That's not funny, Tara!"
Of course, Tara, Matt and Luke giggle up a storm after that.
━━━━━━
When they'd arrived back to the BAU and everyone had their paperwork finished up, Casey had decided to go and pay a visit up to Emily at her office — which could be considered as Casey's office now.
Casey knocked on the doorframe and Emily had been putting things in boxes and stood up. "Hey." Casey greeted. "Hey," Emily greeted back and Casey looked at the boxes around the office. "I'll be out of here soon." Emily motions towards the boxes.
"No, no, don't rush." Casey tells. "I don't really want the office, anyways." Emily smile, "Well, a great Unit Chief deserves one. And you've earned it."
Casey had been hearing the word 'earned' a lot lately. It may have been a guilty gut but Casey truly didn't believed she earned this spot as unit chief. "I actually wanted to talk to you about that." Casey steps inside.
Emily turns her undivided attention to Casey with furrowed brows. "I know that you gave me this job for a reason. A reason I... still can't figure out. But all I know is that... I can't do this job by myself."
"Are you... stepping back?" Emily wonders. "No," Casey answered. "I want you to be the consecutive Unit Chief for when I am here and when I'm not. Especially with my own sabbatical and we're two agents down with that anyways. I need someone else making the calls here. In this case, you'd be my second-in-command. You call the shots, just like me. Apparently, Barnes making that a thing was a good thing." Casey joked as she explained away.
"I don't want you to step back from your duties here. And I'm gonna need a lot of help. I heard that maybe you were taking up London again since you're not Unit Chief anymore. But I don't want you to leave. And I kind of already had the senator sign off on it. Sorry, you're stuck with us." Casey told and Emily nods at the woman. "I will gladly take up that offer. Because there's no where else I'd rather be." She admits.
"You and me, working together." Emily tells and Casey smiles. Before she could decide to head out for the night, Casey is stopped by Emily. "Casey..." the younger woman turns to Emily. "I gave you the job because you've had years of experience here. Even before I came, you were here serving coffee when you should've been at school. You're one of the best people I know that could handle this job. Don't think you haven't earned that seat because you have. No matter what anyone tells you."
Emily had guessed that since the whole ordeal with Barnes, Casey had been doubting herself and her skills frequently. Maybe feeling as if she hadn't earned anything. It was her job as her mentor to tell her otherwise. And Emily knew what that was like, having your whole demeanor change simply because of one person.
"And JJ was a close second." Emily joked and Casey chuckled, "Thanks, Em." Casey stops at the doorway again.
"How about this?" Emily tilted her head up towards Casey. "I take this office and you take Morgan's old office? He'd want you to have it. And besides, you're still practically unit chief. And a great unit chief deserves an office."
"Alright." Emily smiles.
