twenty-four
Juyeon opened the door to find a startled looking Changmin standing there. "Neither of you answered your phones," he said, walking in without any hello or explanation. "We need to go. Now."
"Why?" Chaeyoung said, sharing a confused glance with Juyeon.
"Because the Palace is being raided," Changmin said, sounding frantic. "I don't even know what's going on. But we have to get to the safehouse. Now."
"What?" she whispered, her body suddenly frozen in fear.
But before her mind could fully process it, before her panic could fully set in, Juyeon grabbed her hand and they ran, following Changmin through the halls. She heard the sounds of horses and loose dogs and stomping boots and she couldn't tell if they were the raiders or people who lived in the Palace. But she didn't have to find out, because Changmin pulled out a book in a bookshelf and pressed his handprint against the wood and suddenly she was being pushed into a dark hallway. The door slammed shut behind all of them, and she prayed that the noise outside was too loud to hear it.
Chanhee was waiting for them at that entrance, and he wordlessly started leading them through the many dark twists and turns. The only light was coming from his flashlight, and everything felt scary and eerie. She felt as though only the feel of Juyeon's hand in hers was keeping her from panicking completely.
After what felt like an eternity, the four of them finally stopped at a door. They had gone through many doors and passageways prior, so she assumed this one would be no different from the rest. But at this one, Chanhee stopped and knocked.
A voice she didn't recognize sounded from the other side. "Password?"
"Bad bitch," Chanhee said, keeping a straight face even as Changmin giggled.
The doors opened, revealing a guard. A look of relief passed through his stoic face as he took in the four of them. "I'm glad you're all safe. His Highness is in the back, you know the room. He's waiting for all of you. You're the last ones."
"Of the elite? What about Dahye?" Juyeon asked, worry lacing his voice.
Annoyance mixed with worry of her own. She wanted to be friends with Dahye, and Chaeyoung desperately hoped she was safe. But that didn't stop her from being jealous of Juyeon's worry as well. She couldn't help it - her heart had a mind of its own. But she scolded herself internally, feeling awful because of the unwanted jealous feelings.
"She's safe as well. Jacob brought her safely."
"That's a relief," Changmin said. "Thank you."
They all followed Chanhee to a room in the back. The door was closed but he didn't even bother to knock, he just opened the door and led the way in. She couldn't help but be in awe of how big the safe room was. It was even larger than her home.
She stepped inside, feeling relief course through her veins as she saw all of the people she'd begun to think of as extended family.
And there was Younghoon, running up to her. In a moment so unlike him, he wrapped his arms around her in a hug. "Thank God you're alright."
She hugged him back, a laugh escaping her lips. "Is this a sentimental Younghoon?" she teased.
He pulled away, mock-glaring at him. Ah. There was the Younghoon they all knew and loved.
"Don't be silly. You know I had every right to be worried. You know that they came here after you."
