"And guess where we're going today?" Chaeyoung said excitedly, pausing and waiting for her parents to say something.
"Are you finally going to town?" her mother guessed.
"Yes!" Chaeyoung squealed, clapping her hands together in delight. It was a good thing her phone was propped up and she wasn't holding it, because with all her moving around she certainly would have dropped it. "Isn't that exciting?" she gushed. "Juyeon is taking me. I mean, obviously he has to come with me because, you know, but he was the one who suggested it and everything! He said since I've been working so hard at practice I deserve this break."
"You do," her father said, grinning at her. "How's practice going?"
"Ah, I forgot to tell you, didn't I?" she said, her smile widening as she looked at them proudly. "I think I'm getting better! For the first time I actually felt something," she gushed. "Like, if Juyeon had been human, I'd be able to do something to his memory. You know? I think it's partially because I'm always surrounded by the elites," she rambled on. "Being around such powerful vampires must make my powers better too, don't you think?"
Her mom was smiling at her proudly. "It seems that way. And because of your hard work too. I'm proud of you."
"We both are," her father said.
"I wish I could see you," she sighed, pouting at them through the phone. "But Younghoon is insisting that it's safer for me here. He's not letting me go back to the human world yet."
"If Younghoon says that, you should believe him," her mother said. "Listen to him and stay there."
"I know, I know. I just miss you guys."
"We miss you too," her father said, his eyes tinted with sadness as he stared at his daughter through the screen. "But your happiness and safety is the priority. For both, I think it's best that you stay there."
Chaeyoung blinked back the sudden tears that came to her eyes. She really did miss them. But he was right. For her safety, she had to stay. And for her happiness...
She was happier here. She fit in here, when she never did in the human world. But that didn't mean there weren't parts of the human world that she missed terribly. Namely, her parents. She wished more than anything that they would be allowed in the vampire world with her, but the rules were strict. Humans were not allowed.
She started at a knock on her door. "That must be Juyeon!" she said, suddenly whispering so that he wouldn't hear her on the other side. "How do I look?" she asked, getting up and twirling for her parents, showing off the floral dress she was wearing, with cute strappy sandals and dangly gold earrings.
"You look beautiful," her mother said, smiling knowingly at her. "Juyeon won't be able to resist you."
Chaeyoung laugh. "Please. Our relationship is purely business," she said, though a voice in the back of her head said that it wasn't true. At least not for her. She could slowly feel herself falling for him, despite her best attempts not to.
"Then why'd he ask you out on this date?" her father questioned, wiggling his eyebrows at her playfully.
"It's not a date!" she insisted, feeling her face begin to heat up. "I'm leaving," she said, shaking her head at her parents and trying not to laugh. "Talk to you tomorrow!" she said, hanging up on the two of them, who were both making silly faces at her. She took one more look at herself in the mirror before rushing over and opening the door.
"Sorry!" she exclaimed, breathless. "I was talking to my parents..." she said, trailing off as she took a good look at him. His outfit was simple, a white button down shirt tucked into blue slacks, but he looked gorgeous. The sleeves of his shirt were rolled up, revealing his muscular arms and an expensive looking gold watch. And he was holding a bouquet of blood red roses in his hands.
"For you," he said, holding out the flowers for her. "As a gift for doing so well in training yesterday," he quickly added. "I told you that you'd eventually get the hang of this vampire stuff."
Chaeyoung laughed, trying to shove down her disappointment. The flowers had got her hoping that this may actually be a date of sorts, but it clearly wasn't. "I'm lucky to have such a great teacher," she finally said.
Juyeon shrugged, a smug look on his face. "I can't argue with that," he said playfully, making her laugh again as she put the flowers in a vase with water. "Shall we go?" he asked, holding out his arm to her.
She took it.
