"Look at this!" Chaeyoung exclaimed, shoving yet another product into Juyeon's hands. This time, it was a music box. Before that, it had been a clock. A vase. Everything was new and exciting to her. "There's a little vampire," she said, looking at the figure and pointing it out to him. "And look, when you twist this," she said, demonstrating for him. "It turns into a wolf!"
"I don't see what's so impressive about it," Juyeon said, frowning at her. "I do that too."
"It's more impressive when the music box does it," she said, enjoying the irritated and slightly jealous look that crossed his face when she said that. "In the human world, when you twist those, music comes out. Here, it transforms! But where do you get the music?"
"You have to ask it to sing," Juyeon said. "Obviously. Or howl. Depending on the form."
"Ask it?" she echoed, confused.
"Yes," he said. "Ask it. Like this," he said, his voice dropping as he beckoned her closer to him. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer as he looked intently at the object. He switched the figure back into a vampire. "Sing," he demanded, his voice barely a whisper. "But quietly."
Chaeyoung watched in awe as the figure shimmered with magic and then came to life. And then, just as Juyeon ordered...
It started singing.
She gasped, looking at the figure and then back at Juyeon. "How'd you do that?"
"Stop," he told the figure, and it went back to its original position and stopped singing. He turned to look at Chaeyoung, pride in his gaze. "It's magic, obviously. I can't believe you've never seen one of these before."
"It's so cool," she said, sighing wistfully as she looked at the music box.
He closed it. "Cooler than the ones in the human world?"
"Definitely," she said, nodding her head.
"Then let me buy it for you," he said, a bright smile coming to his face.
"You don't have to do that," she insisted, reaching for the box.
"I want to," he said, holding it away from her. "You should have it. I want to give you something, so don't argue," he said. "If you feel bad, why don't you instead give me something in return?"
"I don't have money though," she said. "At least, not vampire money."
"You can get your human money exchanged at the bank," he told her, pulling her towards the register. "But-"
"Juyeon?"
They both stopped, turning at the sound of the female voice.
"Juyeon!" the girl said again, this time more excitedly as she rushed towards them. "I haven't seen you in forever! Your parents keep telling me to go to the palace to see you, but I haven't had the time," she said, laughing. "You haven't had the time to come to my place either."
"Like you, I've been busy," Juyeon said, his eyes softening as he looked at the girl. She was extremely pretty, with hair dyed a strawberry blonde color, falling in perfect waves down her shoulders. Even though she was wearing simple shorts and a t-shirt, she was so pretty that she looked like she was modeling.
Chaeyoung struggled to push down her immediate feelings of envy, knowing that the two vampires in front of her would be able to sense those feelings.
"Hi," the girl said brightly, addressing Chaeyoung now. "I'm Na Dahye. It's nice to meet you."
"Kim Chaeyoung," she said softly. "It's nice to meet you too."
