prologue

The girl walked through the forest, the moonlight illuminating her figure as she searched the trees for something specific. She looked human, but no human would have been able to see as well as she did during the dark night, in the middle of the forest with only the full moon to shine down on her. Some might even mistake her for a vampire, with her pale skin and her lips that were naturally tinted a coral color.

But she was neither.

She was a girl who was neither human nor vampire.

She was a half-blood.

The girl trudged through the woods, still searching the trees. Her night vision was way better than the average human's, and yet it was still inadequate compared to a full vampire's.

Finally finding what she was looking for, she pressed her fingers against the crescent moon carving on one of the trees, and the tree spun around, revealing a boy sitting on its roots.

"You're Chaeyoung?" the boy asked, standing up to greet her. She didn't say anything, just nodded and watched him nervously.

"Your parents aren't with you, right?" he said, continuing to ask the girl questions.

The girl finally spoke, her soft voice echoing through the sleepy forest. "They said they couldn't come with me. Well... My father couldn't," she clarified. "So I wanted to go alone."

"You're ready?"

The girl didn't look ready. She looked nervous, really nervous. Nevertheless, she nodded, and the boy held out his hand to her.

"Kevin Moon, at your service."

She tucked her hand into his and he led her past the tree, the scene shifting. Behind them was the forest she'd entered, slowly fading away.

In front of her was something she'd only ever heard about from her mother.

The vampire nation.
