three

The early morning unwrapped each hue of the world, gently shaking the shoulders of those in slumber, awaking them for a new day, another opportunity for them to make things right.

Hyunji took out her earphones where a dramatic, classical piano piece had been drifting through her ears, the sound soothing to listen to as she scribbled notes on subtopics of microbiology. But when she felt the warm rays of the sun dancing across her face, she paused, leaning back in her chair, taking a moment to appreciate the early work done by the galaxy's largest star.

Behind her, Miso was in a deep slumber, the rise and fall of her chest heavy, her head buried in the comfort of many blankets and pillows, her stuffed teddy bear clutched tightly under her arms.

Hyunji chuckled quietly, not wanting to disturb her best friend after her excitable evening.

The street race had been impressive, and whilst the Park girl had very much appreciated the speeding of modified cars and the entrancing atmosphere that the crowd provided, she decided that she was going to avoid them, to focus upon her studies instead.

After all, getting accepted into one of the top medical schools in the country meant lots of hard work, and if she lost her concentration and flow, Hyunji knew that she would topple to the very bottom.

Something that she could not afford.

Her parents had always told her that only those who put in their maximum effort would ever reach the thing that they desired the most, and for a majority of her life, she had obediently followed that advice.

When she was in the sixth grade, she had auditioned for the solo part in the school's showcase. Hyunji had been up against around four other girls, all of them desperate to win the position of being the school's star. The Park girl had spent two entire weeks training her voice on the solo, two or three sleepless nights practising, and when it came for the auditions, she had grabbed the spot.

When she had found herself liking a boy in her second year of high school, instead of quietly running with her feelings and avoiding the topic altogether, she had gifted him some chocolates and flowers, simply asking whether he wanted to go out for a meal. He, of course, accepted her offer and the two had dated for three years.

Park Hyunji knew what she wanted, and she would always get it. That was how the show, no, her show ran, and how it would always be.

Yet, she could never explain the empty feeling in her heart despite receiving the things that she'd worked exceptionally hard for. Despite being the school's pride and joy in the showcase as she sang the solo, her voice felt barren. And even though she and the boy she had liked had been together for three years, she felt alone.

Perhaps it was due to the fact that everything she had lived for was for the sake of her parents.

Hyunji closed her eyes, memories of the previous night and the curious stare of J.One piercing her brain. If her parents found out about her late night activities, she was sure that they would take her out of the dormitories.

But the worst part was, she had enjoyed it, truly. She no longer just appreciated the racers and their cars which sped until she thought they would combust, she loved it! The adrenaline that not only coursed through her veins but the asphalt too.

She wanted to see it again.

She wanted to see him again.
